The texts are written by Samuel Sharpe (1799–1881), who wrote several books on Egyptian history. The texts are illustrated with wood engravings by Joseph Bonomi (1796–1878), an English sculptor, artist and Egyptologist. - Joined: 2 brochures published by Negretti & Zamba, London, "Stereoscopic views in the Holy Land from negatives taken by F. Francis Frith, initially an apprentice in a cutlery business and later a partner in a grocery firm, shifted his focus to photography in the early 1850s. Between 1856 and 1860, he embarked on three expeditions to Egypt, Sinai, and Jerusalem, capturing striking images of ancient monuments using the wet collodion process. This Supplementary Volume to Egypt, Sinai, and Palestine features some of his earliest photographs of iconic sites, including Cairo, the Pyramids at Giza, Thebes, Luxor, the temples at Karnak, as well as significant locations like Jerusalem, Damascus, Gaza, and Nubia. Initially a successful grocer, Frith turned to photography in the 1850s, becoming a key figure in early travel photography. In 1856, Frith embarked on a series of ambitious trips to Egypt, Palestine, and Syria, where he captured the regionâs ancient monuments and everyday life. His work is noted for its technical precision and clarity, achieved by using large-format cameras and wet collodion plates under challenging conditions. Frith's images of the pyramids, temples, and biblical sites not only provided Western audiences with a rare visual glimpse of distant lands but also played a significant role in shaping Victorian perspectives on the East. Frith founded the company Francis Frith & Co. in 1859, which became one of the largest photographic archives of the time. He systematically documented towns, cities, and rural landscapes across Britain, producing images for postcards and albums, making photography accessible to a broader public. Dartmoor Prison, located in Princetown, Devon, was constructed in 1806 to accommodate French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic Wars. Situated on the isolated moorlands of Dartmoor, its remote location was chosen to minimize the risk of escape. The prison eventually housed not only French soldiers but also American prisoners captured during the War of 1812. After the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the prison was closed in 1816, leading to Princetown being almost completely abandoned. However, the fortunes of the area changed with the arrival of the railway in 1823, built to serve the local granite quarries. This new infrastructure brought economic activity back to the region and eventually paved the way for the prison to reopen in 1850. In its second phase, Dartmoor Prison became a facility for housing some of Britainâs most dangerous criminals. Over the decades, it has built a reputation as one of the countryâs most notorious prisons, known for its harsh environment and strict discipline. Today, Dartmoor Prison remains operational, its history deeply intertwined with the legacy of British criminal justice and the surrounding moorlands that have shaped its character and function.

Each circa 16 x 23 cm. Each signed and some also with number in lower right/left corner in the negative, each mounted to original album page (water stains), with title, photographer's name and year printed below the image on the mount. - - Francis Frith embarked on three expeditions to Egypt between 1856-1860. Using wet collodion glass plate negatives, he captured iconic monuments like the Pyramids at Giza and the temple of Karnak in Luxor, producing albumen prints on-site in a portable darkroom. The majority signed and numbered in negative, each with printed caption on mount. With contents, title and illustration on frontispiece. Bound in green leather-backed cloth (buckled, edges/corners rubbed) with gold-embossed title on front cover. William MacKenzie, London, Glasgow & Edinburgh, 1862. - - Francis Frith, a former apprentice in a cutlery house and a partner in a grocery business, transitioned to photography in the early 1850s. He embarked on three expeditions between 1856-1860 to Egypt, Sinai, Ethiopia, and Jerusalem, capturing ancient monuments and culture using wet collodion glass plate negatives and producing albumen prints on-site in a portable darkroom. The second volume of his four-part series on Egypt, Palestine, and Nubia includes views of Cairo, the Pyramids at Giza, and early photographs of the temple of Kar- nak in Luxor.
