Ernst Fuchs Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1930 - d. 2015

Ernst Fuchs (13 February 1930 – 9 November 2015) was an Austrian painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor, architect, stage designer, composer, poet, singer and one of the founders of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. In 1972, he acquired the derelict Otto Wagner Villa in Hütteldorf, which he restored and transformed. The villa was inaugurated as the Ernst Fuchs Museum in 1988.

Fuchs studied sculpture with Emmy Steinbock (1943), attended the St. Anna Painting School where he studied under Professor Fröhlich (1944), and entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (1945) where he began his studies under Professor Robin C. Anderson, later moving to the class of Albert Paris von Gütersloh.

At the Academy, he met Arik Brauer, Rudolf Hausner, Fritz Janschka, Wolfgang Hutter, and Anton Lehmden, together with whom he later founded what has become known as the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. He was also a founding member of the Art-Club (1946), as well as the Hundsgruppe, set up in opposition to it in 1951, together with Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Arnulf Rainer. Fuchs died at the age of 85 on November 9, 2015.[1]

Fuchs was Austrian monarchist. He painted Emperor Franz Joseph I. and Otto von Habsburg.

Ernst Fuchs Esther bronze, gold plated h. 350 cm; span: 230 cm signed and numbered on the base: Ernst Fuchs 5/5 For the design of the "Paradiso" sculpture park to be installed behind the Fuchs Villa in Hütteldorf in the early 2000s, the artist created the monumental bronze sculpture "Esther", who wears a magnificent gilded crown on her head. A connection can be traced to the biblical Queen Esther, the wife of the Persian King Ahasuerus, who saved her people, the Jews, from annihilation with her negotiatory skill. Yet Ernst Fuchs certainly also knew the far more ancient meaning of the name, which means "goddess" in Babylonian and "young woman" in Sanskrit. He thus gives the sculpture a meaning that goes beyond the biblical context. Ernst Fuchs’ Esther, with her expansive hips and plump breasts covered by golden leaves, is a symbol of fertility and femininity familiar to us from many cultures since the Palaeolithic Age. With its closed eyelids, her face is reminiscent of Apsara heads – those half-human, half-divine women of Hindu and Buddhist mythology – and of the Khmer heads that can be admired in the famous Bayon temple in Angkor Thom. Ernst Fuchs has studied ancient cultures intensively and repeatedly incorporates their canon of figures and mythologies into his diverse body of work. Thus, the attributes given to Esther have also been carefully chosen by the artist. On her outstretched left arm; we see a twig with a budding blossom as a sign of immortality; as well as of femininity, love and fertility. The right arm is entwined by a snake winding its way towards the woman’s shoulder. In Ancient Egypt, as in many ancient eastern cultures, the snake was an expression of supreme divine and royal power. It is a primordial symbol of life, renewal, rejuvenation and resurrection on the one hand, and of death and destruction on the other. In the Bible, the snake is not only the tempter who causes the expulsion from Paradise, but also a symbol of power and wisdom – and, as the companion of many different goddesses, embodies the female logos. Est: €70,000 - €140,000

Ernst Fuchs "Weltreise - Traum - Bruchlandung" early 2000s mixed media on canvas; framed 168 x 236 cm inscribed on the reverse: Weltreise - Traum Bruchlandung private property, Vienna Ernst Fuchs was a flamboyant figure within the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism. With a certain reservation towards abstract art and under the influence of artists such as Max Ernst, Rene Magritte and Salvador Dalí, while also borrowing from Art Nouveau and the Viennese Secessionists such as Klimt or Kubin, the "Fantastic Realists" shaped Austrian artistic life for decades with their symbolist, mythical, otherworldly paintings. In his works, Fuchs depicted his private mythologies, apocalyptic visions and historicisms as well as dreams, combining strong colours and contrasts to create a fantastic and magical cosmology. Time and again the artist, who was Jewish by birth but baptised a Catholic, devoted himself to religious themes, while at the same time his art also reflected the turbulent social and cultural changes of the 1960s in particular. It became a symbol for the emerging hippie movement and the push towards freedom, body awareness and lucid dreaming. Fuchs’ paintings and drawings are characterised by their detailed, surrealistic imagery and evoke a dreamlike atmosphere. Intensive colours and an almost exuberant sensuality are characteristic of his work. Through intensive study of the Old Masters, whom he also liked to quote, he acquired great technical skill in oil painting and in a variety of printing techniques; Fuchs’s paintings also display remarkable precision and a keen understanding of the use of light and shadow. His multi-faceted artistic approach, controversial debates about his work and eccentric appearance made Ernst Fuchs an important figure in the art scene of his time.   (Ina Waldstein)
