The painter Vincenzo Funiciello was born on Ischia, Italy, in 1905. His parents were not able to send him to a University. But Gaetano Ricchizzi discovered him and became his teacher. Funiciello often traveled to Berlin where he got in touch with the German Impressionism and was fascinated by it. His distinctive landscapes and interiors consist of pasty colors that are arranged mosaic-like on the canvases.

It displays the hustle and bustle on St. Mark's Square in Venice. The viewer observes this from a quit place in a café looking towards St. Mark's Basilica. With short brushstrokes, figures and architecture are rendered. The painting is signed at the lower right half of the painting. The reverse side shows information on a previous exhibition of the painting 'Platz von der Markuskirche' in Venedig. Funiciello Vincenzo, itali. The work is in a very good condition with only minimal signs of age and wear. The edges show color flaking where the frame has rubbed. The frame is chipped and scratched.
