    GOUACHE - Ship's Portrait of Hermaphrodite Brig 'Alfarata' by Michele Funno (Italy, active 1840-1858), depicting the ship passing Mount Vesuvius near Naples, in 1920's gold molded frame, SS: 16" x 23 1/2", OS: 19" x 26 1/2", very good condition. The 'Alfarata' was built in Harpswell, Maine, by Norton Stover, in 1855.

NOTES The wooden barque Helen, 346 tons, was built in New Brunswick, Canada, in 1846. Owned by Miller & Co. and commanded by Captain T. Johnson, she spent her early years voyaging to Quebec out of Montrose until settling for destinations nearer home prior to her loss through stranding in 1855-56.
