Barent Gael, Dutch 1630/35-1698- Two village scenes with horsemen by a tavern; oils on canvas, both signed 'B GAEL' (lower right), each 49 x 40.6 cm., a pair (2). Provenance: with Richard Green, London [T 1374 and T1375]. from whom acquired by the present owner. Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 28 April 2021, lot 361. Note: Thought to have trained under Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668), Gael is best known for his lively depictions of tavern and market scenes, often animated by horses and set within Italianate landscapes. The present pair are particularly fine examples of his work, showing a bustling village scene that almost appears as one large composition, split over the two canvases. Wouwerman's influence is evident through the dramatic skies and lively horses. A similar work by the artist sold at Hampel, Germany, on 22 September 2022, lot 522, (€8,000 hammer).

Gael was born in Haarlem.He was a pupil of Philips Wouwerman, who painted numerous scenes of battles and scenographies (in Dutch: pleisterplaatsen). He was in the habit of working at his own pace, at the risk of offending his clients. Houbraken recounts an occasion when a client came to his house to see a work and Gael claimed that he was "not at home". The client was so offended that when Gael handed him the finished painting, he told him that he was now "not at home" and refused to pay him. He painted Italianate landscapes and was a prominent figure in the Guild of St. Luke in Haarlem around 1642. His last known dated painting dates from 1679, but his works are rarely dated. He is listed as deceased in a list of guild members drawn up by Laurens, son of Vincent van der Vinne, in 1702. He moved from Haarlem to Amsterdam between 1661 and 1673, where he resided until his death.

Dutch School Attributed to BARENT GAEL (c. 1630 - 1698); second third of the 17th century. "Landscape." Oil on panel. Measurements: 24 x 29,5 cm. In this Dutch landscape of the XVII century, attributed to Barent Gael, the scene is developed in an idyllic rural environment, where the daily life takes place in harmony with nature. The composition places us in front of a thatched farmhouse, partially covered by vegetation, whose brick and wood structure integrates organically with the surrounding landscape. Leafy trees frame the scene, while on the horizon the silhouette of a village with its church can be glimpsed, providing an atmospheric depth that emphasizes the sense of immensity of the sky. The artist accurately captures peasant activity: in the center of the composition, a group of figures gather around a rustic table, conversing and sharing a moment of rest. On the right, a traveler in a wide-brimmed hat appears to be negotiating with a woman carrying a basket, while two horses laden with bales rest beside him. In the foreground, a child plays by a small stream, adding dynamism to the scene. A dog lying on the ground and chickens pecking in the dirt reinforce the domestic and peaceful character of the composition. The treatment of light and atmosphere responds to the Dutch pictorial tradition of the Golden Age, in which the detailed observation of the environment and the representation of climatic effects play a fundamental role. The clouds, softly modeled with shades of light and shadow, suggest a sky in movement, contributing to the naturalness of the scene. The chromatic palette, dominated by earthy and greenish tones, evokes the serenity of the countryside, while the small touches of red and blue in the figures' clothing provide subtle hallmarks that enliven the composition. This work is aesthetically close to the painting of Barent Gael (c. 1630 - 1698), a Dutch landscape painter of the Golden Age. Gael was born in Haarlem. According to Houbraken, he was a pupil of Philips Wouwerman. By 1642 he was already painting Italianate landscapes and was a prominent member of the Guild of St. Luke in Haarlem. The last known dated painting is from 1679, but his works are rarely dated. He moved from Haarlem to Amsterdam between 1661 and 1673, where he remained until his death.

Barent Gael, Horsemen at an Inn in a Landscape

Signed lower right above the barrel: B. GAEL The composition with riders and resting horses in the foreground, houses and a church tower in the background is typical of the Haarlem artist Barent Gael. The realistic depiction of the horses and the encampment tent confirm the statement of the Dutch historiographer Arnold Houbraken (1660-1719) that Gael was trained in the workshop of the important Haarlem master Philips Wouwerman (cf. De Groote Schouburgh der Nederl. konstschilders en schilderessen, vol. 3, The Hague 1721). From 1988 until 2024, the work of art was on permanent loan from a private collection to the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem. It is listed in the RKD, The Hague, under no. 186194 as an authentic work by Barent Gael.

GAEL This scene with resting horses and riders in the foreground, a church tower in the background and a row of packhorses standing on the left edge is typical of Barent Gael from Haarlem. The realisation of the horses and the realistic depiction of the encampment tent support the assertion of the Dutch biographer Arnold Houbraken (1660-1719) that Gael was apprenticed in the workshop of the important Haarlem master Philips Wouwerman (De Groote Schouburgh der Nederl. konstschilders en schilderessen, vol. III, The Hague 1721). Around 1600 he moved to Amsterdam, where he was first mentioned in a document on 27 March 1673. Most of his paintings are signed "B. GAEL". Fully coloured landscapes that extend diagonally into the depths of the picture show his orientation towards his Haarlem painter colleagues Claes Molenaer and Roelof van Vries. The favourite subjects of this Dutch Golden Age painter include hunting parties resting in front of an inn under tall trees, usually with a grey horse in front of them, while the peasant figures are reminiscent of those of the brothers Adriaen and Isaak van Ostade. The painting has been on permanent loan from a private collection to the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem since 1988.

GAEL, oil on panel, 47 x 64 cm, framed Provenance: Private collection, The Netherlands The present market scene, with a poulterer in the foreground, a chapel behind, and string of pack horses being led off to the far left of the composition, is typical of the Haarlem landscape painter Barent Gael. The handling of the horses, and the realistic depiction of the traders’ stall awnings, very similar to army campaign tents as found in pleisterplaatsen, or staging areas, supports the Dutch biographer’s, Arnold Houbraken’s (1660–1719), assertion that Gael trained in the workshop of the great Haarlem master Philips Wouwerman. According to Houbraken, Gael was a cantankerous artist, claiming once to a patron that ‘he wasn’t at home’ when called upon. In return when Gael visited the patron to collect payment for one of his paintings, the aggrieved collector also told the artist ‘he was not at home.’ Between 1661–73, Gael was active in Amsterdam, although whether this was on account of upsetting all his clients in Haarlem, one can only speculate.

WEITE LANDSCHAFT MIT VORNEHMEN REITERN VOR EINEM GASTHAUS Öl auf Holz. 45,5 x 63,5 cm. An einer belebten Dorfstraße haben drei elegant gekleidete Reiter vor einem Wirtshaus auf der linken Bildseite Halt gemacht. Einer von ihnen bläst eine Fanfare, der Zweite hat ein Glas fröhlich erhoben, während der Dritte von seinem Schimmel gestiegen ist, um wohl für Nachschub zu sorgen. Weitere Stehende sind vor dem Haus zu erkennen, sowie rechtsseitig eine Bank mit drei sitzenden Figuren. Nach rechts führt ein Weg in die Ferne, auf dem auch ein reitendes elegantes Paar zu erkennen ist. Am rechten Bildraum ein hoher, in den grau blauen Himmel ragender Baum als Repoussoir.
