Thomas Gainsborough Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1727 - d. 1788

Thomas Gainsborough's paintings reflect 18th century Britain, and while many of the artist's best-known works are portraits of nobility, his other passion was landscapes. While living in Bath, he became renowned for his portraiture. Subsequently moving to London, his portrait skills attracted the attention of King George III and Queen Charlotte. Thomas Gainsborough's prints showcase his use of various media, such as chalk, charcoal, graphite, and color washes. Thomas Gainsborough's artwork reflects the Rococo style, as can be seen in the elegance, detail, and mood of his portrait The Blue Boy.

After sending the Society of Art some of his paintings, Thomas Gainsborough gained greater recognition, and became a founding member of the Royal Society in 1768. Survey the history of rich and famous people with fine collectible portrait prints for sale at Invaluable.

Although 123 of the 150 on board made it ashore, only a handful survived. John Williams is recorded as being on board the ship and making it safely to dry land. Williams is believed to have joined a survival group which marched southwards, led by second mate William Shaw who subsequently died of exhaustion. Williams continued alongside William Habberley, a survivor who made it back to London to tell the tale, but was ultimately stoned and beaten to death by Rharhabe tribesmen at the mouth of the Fish River. Williams is described as a ‘nabob’, a wealthy British man employed by the East India Company and it is likely that, before he left on his fateful voyage, he had the means to have the present portrait painted by an artist of repute. 75 x 65cm framed

            Est: £5,000 - £8,000

Thomas Gainsborough (1727 – 1788) Cottage Door with shepherd and sheep c. 1785 Inscribed bottom left with a stamp: T.Gainsborough  Pen, ink and sepia wash with a stamped gold decorative border This late drawing is unrecorded in the literature. It belongs to a group of drawings, first produced in the late 1770s, of female figures and children at a cottage door anticipating a male figure who is generally bringing them firewood. The drawing on offer is presented with a decorative border stamped in gold leaf that suggests it was one of the few drawings that left the artist’s studio—the artist probably gave it to a friend, a colleague or to curry favour with a patron. The sheet is similar in technique to a pair of drawings in the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam that have similar decorative stamped gold leaf borders. The Rotterdam drawings use sepia ink and the bare paper to create the forms and they are brought into focus with minimal oily linear chalk marks. In this newly-discovered drawing this detail is especially evident in the steps leading to the cottage, in the trees and the sheep and figures. Provenance: Sabin Galleries, 4 Cork Street, W1 Property of a nobleman Dimensions: (Frame) 15.5 in. (H) x 18.5 in. (W) (Paper) 9.5 in. (H) x 12 in. (W)

WEITE LANDSCHAFT MIT KATE UND BAUERN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 80,5 x 153 cm. Verso mit Resten eines alten Etiketts sowie handschriftlichen Vermerken auf dem Keilrahmen. In vergoldetem gekehltem Rahmen.
