GANKU (1756? - 1838): PICTURE ROLL WITH VASE AND CHRYSANTHEMUM

Lot 333: GANKU (1756? - 1838): PICTURE ROLL WITH VASE AND CHRYSANTHEMUM

Auction Date: Feb 03, 2018

Estimate: €1,100 - €2,200

Description: Ink on paper. Japan, 18th to 19th cent.

Masterfully airy, in part very suggestive painting in an expressly vertical composition. The image depicts a slender vase with reflecting lights that lend it an almost spherical dynamic. Protruding upwards from the vase is a branch with chrysanthemum (kiku) leaves and blossoms. Given that reeds seem unlikely, the contour is probably meant to suggest a mountain (?). In the bottom left-hand corner is the signature GAN-KU ? ? in an abbreviated form, with a red seal, KAKAN GANKU ? ? ? ? below it. Ganku was the founder of the Kishi school (Kishi being merely another way of reading the Gan in his name) and he also painted for the Imperial Palace in Kyoto. He was given the honorary title of Echizen no Kami. The silk brocade mounting is original and the dignified rollers are made of ivory. The wooden box has an inscription and signature from the artist.

Condition report: Good, original condition, some folds stabilized.

IMAGE DIMENSION DIMENSIONS 108 x 30 CM, ROLL 184 x 33 CM

Auction Date: Jan 28, 2017

Estimate: €2,560 - €3,200

Description: Painting with ink and some colors on silk. Japan, dated 1799

At the upper left, the period Kansei and cycle year, as well as signature KA-KAN-DO ? ? ? GAN-KU ? ?, below is a red seal Ganku Funzen. Ganku was the founder of the Kishi School (Kishi another reading of Gan in Ganku), who received two years before his death the honorary title Echizen no Kami. Kakando is one of his artist names, Funzen an alternative name. The picture has a very good mounting with cultivated silk brocade, black lacquer rollers, altogether very good condition.
