    Est: €3,000 - €3,500

CAMILLE ROSE GARCÍA (California, 1970). "Squidley's Escape", 2005. Acrylic on wood. With an informative label on the back from Galería Vacio 9. Signed in the lower left corner. Size: 84 x 55 cm. Her strikingly subversive images define her signature style, based on elaborate socio-political narratives that the artist hides under layers and shades of fairy-tale charm, subtly critiquing the failures of the capitalist utopias celebrated by American countercultures. The clipped writings of William Burroughs and surrealist films, as well as vintage Disney and Fleischer cartoons, influence Garcia's layered and fragmented descriptive scenes. The surfaces of his paintings are weathered, as if they have been repeatedly painted over, alluding to medieval motifs or films from the 1950s. Garcia's grotesque yet persuasively beautiful works explore darkness and reflect the artist's childhood memories, which seem warm and hazy on the one hand, fictional mirrors of Los Angeles' somewhat ominous and violent counterculture on the other. As she herself said in an interview, "the things that make me angry motivate me". Camille Rose Garcia is a California-based pop surrealist artist. She produces paintings in a cartoon style inspired by a gothic current. Her stylistic influences include artists such as Walt Disney and Philip K. Dick. Garcia's parents met at art school in San Francisco. Her father was filmmaker David Garcia and her mother, Rosemary Garcia, is a muralist. Camille Rose Garcia received her BFA from the University of California at Davis in 1994 and her BFA from Otis College of Art and Design in 1992. Six years of art school left her disillusioned, so she decided to return home and start a band, The Real Minx. Garcia's first solo exhibition was in 1999 at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery, where she would exhibit frequently. She was one of the artists whose work was featured in the 2004 book Last Gasp, Pop Surrealism: The Rise of Underground Art, as an example of the genre. In 2007, the San Jose Museum of Art held a mid-career retrospective called Tragic Kingdom: The Art of Camille Rose Garcia. She illustrated a version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 2010. "John Tenniel's original illustrations have always been some of my favourites," Garcia said in an interview when asked about the book. In 2013, his illustrative work was exhibited at the Walt Disney Family Museum, along with that of Mary Blair. In 2013, Garcia was part of a four-woman show in Los Angeles called "Black Moon" with other artists such as Jessicka Addams, Elizabeth McGrath and Marion Peck. In 2018, Garcia was honoured at Art Basel Miami by master artist Dobel Tequila for her work as an artist of Mexican descent. Garcia's work has been exhibited internationally in galleries and museums and has been featured in numerous magazines, including Juxtapoz, Rolling Stone and Modern Painter. His work has been exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the San Jose Museum of Art, which hosted Garcia's retrospective "Tragic Kingdom". Garcia has also collaborated with The Walt Disney Family Museum on the exhibition "Camille Rose Garcia: Down the Rabbit Hole", in which she showed a series of Disney-inspired illustrations. Her major exhibitions also include her participation in "Art from the New World" at the Bristol City Museum, "Pop Surrealism", held at the Museum of Visual Arts Palazzo Collicola in Spoleto, Italy, "Turn the Page" at The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and "Cross The Streets" held at MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, Italy in 2017.

    Est: $2,400 - $2,750

Camille Rose Garcia’s impressive art, which floats in the limbo between fairy tales and gothic horror, belongs to the underground art movement called Pop Surrealism or Lowbrow. Garcia’s paintings, sculptures, and prints, which are bittersweet and grotesque yet hauntingly beautiful, represent the artist’s personal childhood memories, warm and nostalgic, mixed with the counterculture of Los Angeles, which was somewhat ominous and violent, drug-ridden world. At the same time, Garcia’s surreal gothic imagery and her dark humor admired by the worldwide audience raise multiple questions about basic existential and human values.
