Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1841 - d. 1920

Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta (24 July 1841 – 15 September 1920) was a Spanish painter from the Madrazo family of artists who worked in the Realistic style; although his later work shows signs of Rococo and Japanese influence. He was known primarily for his portraits. His grandfather was José de Madrazo, his father was the portrait painter, Federico de Madrazo and his brother was Ricardo de Madrazo.

He was born in Rome[1] into a family of artists with a noble background. His grandfather was José de Madrazo, the painter and former Director of the Museo del Prado; his father was Federico de Madrazo, also a painter; his uncles were Luis de Madrazo, a painter, Pedro de Madrazo, an art critic and Juan de Madrazo, an architect; while his brother was Ricardo de Madrazo, also a painter.[2] His maternal grandfather was Tadeusz Kuntze, a Polish painter. The Madrazo family have been described as one of the most important painting dynasties, who literally dominated 19th-century painting in Spain.[3]

His first lessons came from his father and grandfather. Later, he attended the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, where he studied with Carlos Luis de Ribera and Carlos de Haes. He settled in Madrid and completed his education with a visit to Paris in 1860; taking lessons from Léon Cogniet and coming under the influence of his friend, Alfred Stevens.[4]

He had his first exhibition that same year and often visited New York to sell his paintings. Among his clients there were the Vanderbilt family and Alexander Turney Stewart.[5] He rarely had exhibitions in Spain. In 1882 he, Stevens, Giuseppe de Nittis and Georges Petit established an "International Painting Exhibition" to promote foreign artists living in Paris.[5]

He was a frequent exhibitor at the Paris Salon, won a major medal at the Exposition Universelle (1889)[4] and was a regular at the salon of Madeleine Lemaire. Most of his female portraits feature a model named Aline Masson, the daughter of the doorman at the Paris residence of the Marqués de Casa Riera [es].[6]

After 1862, he lived in Paris for much of his life. In the late 1860s, he spent some time in Rome with his brother, working in the studios of Marià Fortuny, who had married their sister Cecilia. During the Franco-Prussian War, he lived in Granada. His wife died during childbirth in 1874, the same year as his brother-in-law, Fortuny.

In 1894, he donated a collection of works by Francisco de Goya that he had acquired in 1869 to the Museo del Prado.[4] In 1914, he moved to Versailles, where he died six years later. His son, Federico de Madrazo y Ochoa (known as "Coco") also became a notable painter.

Raimundo De Madrazo y Garreta, Portrait of a Boy with a White Shirt and Brown Leather Belt

      Est: €25,000 - €35,000

Signed and dated upper right: R. Madrazo 20 The painting has been in the family since its creation. It depicts the son of the then German ambassador to Spain. The portrait of this boy was painted in the last year of the painter's life and is therefore one of his last works. Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta was born in Rome into a family of artists of noble origin. His grandfather was the painter and director of the Prado Museum José de Madrazo; his father Federico and his uncle Luis were also painters, as was his brother Ricardo. His brother Juan, in turn, was an architect. Accordingly, the Madrazo family is considered the most important dynasty of painters in 19th and early 20th century Spain.

Raimundo De Madrazo y Garreta, Portrait of Miss Elsie Woodbury Brown

      Est: €20,000 - €25,000

Signed and dated lower right: RMadrazo / 1898 and partially indistinctly inscribed in French Certificate Prof. Maria Teresa Escohotado Ibor, Universidad del Pais Vasco, Spain, 1st October 2020. Raimundo de Madrazo was celebrated during his lifetime for his elegant portraits of high society. Not only was he one of the most respected and important Spanish painters to live in Paris during the Belle Époque period, he also won numerous awards and attracted the attention of collectors outside France, particularly in New York and London. Representative examples of Madrazo's work can still be found in the fabled mansions of prominent American families of the Golden Age, such as the Marble House and the Breakers in Newport, Rhode Island. The Vanderbilt family were perhaps Madrazo's most loyal patrons. Their society portraits are still on display at the Biltmore House Estate in North Carolina. This previously unpublished study of the head of a young woman was only recently identified as a portrait of Miss Elsie Woodbury Brown (New York 1881-1966) (based on photographs by Prof. Dr. Maria Teresa Escohotado Ibor, Universidad del Pais Vasco, Spain). Madrazo depicted the young beauty several times. A portrait created in New York in 1899 and now owned by the Museo del Prado (fig. 1) shows her sitting in a white dress against a blue background (116 x 89 cm); another portrait from 1898 in a Spanish private collection shows her in a black lace dress with roses in her hand (see Fernando Alcolea: Modelo y amante. Sobre la idendidad del Retrato de senorea (1899) de Raimundo de Madrazo, del Museo del Prado, 2020). Elsie Woodbury Brown was the painter's favorite model during Madrazo's time in New York and Paris. She also became his lover. At the same time, the artist had an affair with Maria Hahn from Venezuela, who became his second wife in 1899. This intimate study from 1898 may be the earliest depiction of his beloved model. The portrait comes from an old family property in Jersey and may have been passed down through a family ancestor: Miss Lily Langtry (Jersey 1853 - 1929 Monte Carlo) was an actress who knew both Raimundo de Madrazo and Elsie Woodbury Brown during the time of their New York love affair. Research documents created by the owner as well as a technical investigation report on the picture are available.

RAIMUNDO DE MADRAZO GARRETA (Rome, 1841 - Versailles, 1920). "Female portrait". Oil on canvas. Reengineered. Signed in the lower right area.

      Est: €80,000 - €90,000

RAIMUNDO DE MADRAZO GARRETA (Rome, 1841 - Versailles, 1920). "Female portrait". Oil on canvas. Reengineered. Signed in the lower right area. Measurements: 47.5 x 68.5 cm; 66 x 88 cm (frame). In a luxurious interior a young woman rests on a divan. Accompanied by her small dogs, the girl seems to be resting after having made a great effort. A message that is conveyed by the author, by the way he has portrayed the model. Sinking on the luxurious fabrics of the divan, and covered with numerous papers that swirl on her skirt. All the elements that make up the composition show the artist's great interest in capturing the qualities, and the technical refinement of the painting. The fabric of the dress, the stockings, the down that hangs from the fan, the impressionist wallpaper, all form an image of sophistication very much in the taste of the time, and characteristic of other works by the artist, such as "Reclining Lady" or "Reading", a work from 1880-1885, which today is in the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Malaga. Son of Federico de Madrazo, Raimundo was taught by his father and grandfather, José de Madrazo y Agudo. He also studied at the Escuela Superior de Pintura y Escultura in Madrid. In 1862 he settled in Paris, where he attended the studio of Léon Cogniet and also attended courses at the School of Fine Arts and the Imperial School of Drawing. During these years he carried out his first important commission, the decoration of the Parisian palace of Queen Marie-Christine with the canvas "The Courts of 1834", finished in 1865. He soon became one of the favorite painters of the Parisian upper class circles, especially for his facility for portraiture. His portraits would be portraits of aristocratic elegance, very soft modeling and sketchy backgrounds, of loose execution, as shown in works such as "Doña Josefa Manzanedo e Intentas de Mitjans, Marquise of Manzanedo" (1875) or "Ramón de Errazu" (1879), both now in the Prado Museum. He also cultivated the genre of customs so much to the taste of the time, a painting of reigning decorative qualities, sometimes close to his brother-in-law Mariano Fortuny, with whom he painted in 1868 and 1872, the latter year in Granada. Raimundo de Madrazo also took part in official exhibitions, both of fine arts and others, and in the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1889 he was awarded the first medal and honored with the appointment of officer of the Legion of Honor. A cosmopolitan artist, he traveled to Rome and London and, beginning in the last decade of the 19th century, to the United States and Argentina, countries where his work was highly recognized. In 1904 his great friend, the collector Ramón de Errazu, bequeathed to the Prado Museum an important collection of works by the artist. Madrazo himself donated two works by Francisco de Goya to the museum in 1894, which indicates his interest in the Aragonese master's paintings. Raimundo de Madrazo is currently represented in this museum, and also in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Orsay Museum in Paris, the National Gallery in London, the Harvard University Art Museum, the Meadows Museum of the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, the Museum of the Spanich Society of America in New York, the National Theater Museum in Almagro, the Provincial Museum in Lugo, the Alcázar Museum in Segovia, the Fine Arts Museums in Bilbao, Valencia, Granada, Zamora and Álava, etc.

Estimation 20 000 - 30 000 €
