Attributed to HENRI GASCAR (Paris,1635 -Rome, 1701). "Portrait of Christina of Sweden". Oil on canvas. Measurements: 114 x 89 cm; 141 x 110,5 cm. This portrait attributed to Henri Gascar represents with courtly elegance Christina of Sweden, one of the most fascinating figures of the European 17th century. The lady appears seated, slightly turned to her left, while her gaze is directed with aplomb to the viewer. Her bearing is majestic: her expression conveys a subtle combination of security and contemplation. The oval face, with a high forehead and finely arched eyebrows, is modeled with an almost porcelain-like delicacy, where the light gently caresses the cheekbone and forehead, leaving the contours in semi-darkness. The gesture of the right hand, rising towards the head as if adjusting a lock of hair, introduces a detail of refined coquetry, in keeping with the courtly feminine iconography of the Baroque. The dress is a display of textile richness and pictorial virtuosity. The brocade of the bodice is strewn with golden reflections, and is complemented by wide sleeves and meticulously worked white lace, which spills like foam over the arms. The green damask silk of the skirt, sumptuous and heavy, folds in naturalistic undulations that reveal the painter's technical skill. A pearl necklace adorns her alabaster collar. The back of the carved armchair and the crimson drapery background provide the necessary aristocratic backdrop to emphasize the character's hierarchy. Christina of Sweden (1626-1689) was a philosopher queen, a Catholic by conversion, a patron of the arts and an enemy of gender conventionality, who abdicated the Swedish throne and settled in Rome, where she cultivated intellectual friendships with figures such as Descartes and Bernini. The portrait does not present her with conventional warlike or regal attributes, but with an aura of cultivated intelligence, resolute femininity and a certain free-spirited melancholy. It is, in that sense, a profoundly modern portrait. Henri Gascar was a French painter who achieved artistic success in England during the reign of Charles II. He painted many court ladies, including several of the king's mistresses, before returning to Paris. Gascar was born in Paris. He arrived in England around 1674, probably at the behest of Louise de Keroualle, Duchess of Portsmouth, Charles II's favorite mistress. Gascar was already known as a skilled portraitist; among the portraits he had already painted was that of Nicolas de Lafond, author of the "Gazette of Holland", painted in 1667 and engraved by Peter Lombart. The patronage of the Duchess of Portsmouth ensured Gascar's rapid success in England. Among the portraits he painted while in England were Charles II (engraved by Peter Vanderbank); Louise, Duchess of Portsmouth (twice, once engraved by Étienne Baudet); Barbara, Duchess of Cleveland (née Villiers), and her daughter, Barbara Fitzroy; Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond; Frances Stewart, Duchess of Richmond; George FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Northumberland; Nell Gwyn; Sophia Bulkeley (engraved by Robert Dunkarton); Edmund Verney; and Philip Herbert, 7th Earl of Pembroke. A portrait of James II as Duke of York by Gascar was part of the king's collection. Upon his return to Paris, Gascar was elected a member of the Académie Royale on October 26, 1680. He then moved to Rome, where he enjoyed a great reputation and died on January 1, 1701, at the age of 66. By 1698 he had painted a portrait of Joseph Ferdinand, the young son of Maximilian II, which was engraved in Munich by Zimmermann.

Sohn des Malers Pierre Gascar, kam 1674 nach England auf Einladung der Louise de Keroualle, Duchess of Portsmouth, der Favoritin König Charles II. Am englischen Hof schuf er mehrere Portraits, von denen etliche durch Peter Vanderbank in Kupfer gestochen wurden. Höchst attraktives Portrait, vor allem auch wegen der ungewöhnlich querovalen Komposition, in der sich die Dargestellte, leicht nach rechts versetzt, in sitzender Haltung dem Betrachter mit kritisch freundlichem Blick entgegenwendet. Das Haupt hoheitsvoll erhoben, Ohrringe und im Dekolleté eine große Perlenkette, das lockige Haar nur leicht gepudert. Über dem spitzenbesetzten weißen Kleid ein blaues goldbesticktes Manteltuch. Das Rot in herrschaftlichen Textilien ist hier dem Rang der Dargestellten zwar nicht gegeben, fand aber in geschickter Weise im roten Kissen Eingang ins Bild. Kopf und Schultern heller beleuchtet, treten umso wirkungsvoller vor dem dunklen Velumhintergrund hervor. Links Ausblick in eine Parklandschaft mit Balustrade und aufstehenden Marmorfiguren, daneben flanierende und am Bassinrand sitzende Figuren sowie ein herrschaftliches Parkgebäude im Hintergrund links oben. Rest. Anmerkung: Barbara Palmer, geb. Villiers, war neben Nell Gwynn seit 1660 die berühmteste der zahlreichen Mätressen von König Charles II (1630 - 1685), nachdem sie 1659 den Diplomaten und Mathematikgelehrten Roger Palmer geheiratet hatte. 1670 wurde Palmer vom englischen König zur Baroness Nonsuch, Countess of Southampton und Duches of Cleveland ernannt. Zahlreiche überlieferte Kupferstiche, welche etwa nach Portraits von Sir Peter Lely gestochen wurden, belegen unsere Identifizierung. King Charles II, while in exile, asked for her hand in marriage, but her uncle refused the suit. She subsequently married Armand-Charles de La Porte, duc de La Meilleraye, a middle ranking noble with a great fortune, and the couple took the title the Duke and Duchess of Mazarin. Cardinal Mazarin left them the largest share of his own considerable fortune. In 1666, they separated and she left France. She lived for years on the estates of the Duke of Savoy but, after his death in 1675, went to England, where King Charles II welcomed her at court.

BARBARA PALMER, GEB. VILLIER, DUCHESS OF CLEVELAND (1640 – 1709) Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 99,5 x 123 cm im Oval. In vergoldetem plastischen ovalen Blattwerkrahmen. Sohn des Malers Pierre Gascar, kam 1674 nach England auf Einladung der Louise de Keroualle, Duchess of Portsmouth, der Favoritin König Charles II. Am englischen Hof schuf er mehrere Portraits, von denen etliche durch Peter Vanderbank in Kupfer gestochen wurden. Höchst attraktives Portrait, vor allem auch wegen der ungewöhnlich querovalen Komposition, in der sich die Dargestellte, leicht nach rechts versetzt, in sitzender Haltung dem Betrachter mit kritisch freundlichem Blick entgegenwendet. Das Haupt hoheitsvoll erhoben, Ohrringe und im Dekolleté eine große Perlenkette, das lockige Haar nur leicht gepudert. Über dem spitzenbesetzten weißen Kleid ein blaues goldbesticktes Manteltuch. Das Rot in herrschaftlichen Textilien ist hier dem Rang der Dargestellten zwar nicht gegeben, fand aber in geschickter Weise im roten Kissen Eingang ins Bild. Kopf und Schultern heller beleuchtet, treten umso wirkungsvoller vor dem dunklen Velumhintergrund hervor. Links Ausblick in eine Parklandschaft mit Balustrade und aufstehenden Marmorfiguren, daneben flanierende und am Bassinrand sitzende Figuren sowie ein herrschaftliches Parkgebäude im Hintergrund links oben. Rest. Anmerkung: Barbara Palmer, geb. Villiers, war neben Nell Gwynn seit 1660 die berühmteste der zahlreichen Mätressen von König Charles II (1630 – 1685), nachdem sie 1659 den Diplomaten und Mathematikgelehrten Roger Palmer geheiratet hatte. 1670 wurde Palmer vom englischen König zur Baroness Nonsuch, Countess of Southampton und Duches of Cleveland ernannt. Zahlreiche überlieferte Kupferstiche, welche etwa nach Portraits von Sir Peter Lely gestochen wurden, belegen unsere Identifizierung. Anmerkung II.: Möglicherweise ist vorliegendes Portrait als Teil einer Folge königlicher Mätressen zu interpretieren, etwa im Sinne einer privaten Schönheitengalerie des Königs. Gemäldepaar PORTRAITS EINES PAARESÖl auf Leinwand im Queroval. 85 x 100. Einheitlich in Rahmen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Qualitätvolle, insbesondere wegen des außergewöhnlichen ovalen Querformats seltene Portraitdarstellungen eines Paares. Darstellung jeweils im Halbbildnis, der Herr nach rechts, die Dame nach links gewandt, jeweils vor dunklem Hintergrund. Die hohe adelige Stellung des Paares wird allein schon durch die äußerst prächtige, wenngleich zurückhaltende Kleidung deutlich, aber auch durch Vorhangdraperien mit Quasten im Hintergrund. Während der nach rechts gewandte Herr mit seiner rechten Hand auf das Gegenstück verweist, hält dort die junge Dame ein Zwergschoßhündchen neben sich, während sie ihren Kopf aufgestützt hält. Nicht allein für die Zeit des Hochbarock, sondern auch für die in Gascards Bildern häufig wiedergegebene, typische Haarpracht mit seitlichen Locken, repräsentieren die beiden Bilder den höfischen Ausdruck der Zeit. Die Identifikation des Paares ist noch nicht näher geleistet, doch scheint eine Zugehörigkeit zum Hause Bourbon nicht ausgeschlossen. Andererseits kennen wir auch zahlreiche höfische Portraits, die während der Zeit des Aufenthaltes des Künstlers in England, wo er großen Erfolg hatte, entstanden. Der Maler war fast ausschließlich im Fach des Portraits tätig, wobei neben ganzfigurigen Bildnissen vor allem das Halbportrait überwiegt. Ganz augenscheinlich wurde er von italienischen wie französischen Portraitisten inspiriert, sein Werk steht dem des Pierre Mignard d. Ä. (1612-1695) nahe. GASCARS h: 101 w: 82 cm Commentaire : Parmi les six nièces de Mazarin qui arrivent à Paris en 1652, Hortense est sans aucun doute l'une des préférées du cardinal. Elevée à la cour avec le jeune Louis XIV et son frère Philippe, elle épouse en 1661 Armand-Charles de La Porte de la Meilleraye et par ce mariage devient duchesse de Mazarin. Le mariage malheureux la pousse à partir chez sa sœur Marie, princesse Colonna, à Rome puis à rejoindre Londres d'où elle doit se défendre des multiples procès intentés par son mari pour la déchoir de ses biens. Protégée par Charles II puis par Guillaume III, sa maison devient vite un rendez-vous incontournable de la noblesse britannique et ce jusqu'à sa mort en 1699. Le peintre Henri Gascars voyage tout au long de sa carrière, de Paris à Rome, en passant par Amsterdam pour enfin se fixer à Londres où il portraitura plusieurs membres de la famille royale. Son chemin semble croiser souvent celui de la duchesse de Mazarin dont nous pensons pouvoir reconnaître les traits dans notre séduisant portrait.
