Venice: Giacomo Gastaldi, 1545, engraved map of Sicily, 374 x 540mm, on a Royal sheet, trimmed with extended paper margins (Some light discolouration and a small hole to upper centre.) THIS FINE AND RARE MAP IS THE SECOND EARLIEST DATED WORK OF THE CARTOGRAPHER, who was one of the great map makers of the sixteenth-century. Gastaldi had been working in Venice since 1539, and this map epitomises the period in which he perfected his artistic virtuosity in the medium of copper engraving. Karrow cites seven later versions based on Gastaldi's masterpiece. Sicily is depicted with its dramatic topography, featuring numerous ports and hill towns, and is surrounded by a Mediterranean of undulating, sinuous waves. Il Disegno Della Geografia Moderna De Tutta La Provincia De La Italia. Venice:Giacomo Gastaldi, 1561, Engraved map of Italy by Fabio Licinio, 541 x 770m, on two joined sheets (Minor discolouration to lower left of map). A HIGHLY IMPORTANT AND INFLUENTIAL MAP, the apex of the great cartographer's vision of Italy, and certainly one of his great masterpieces. The peninsula is shown with great detail and accuracy, a broad panopticon sweeping diagonally across the map from the alpine lakes in the north to the Strait of Messina in the south, with seas adorned with elegantly engraved ships. It is based on Gastaldi's earlier Italian regional maps supplemented with the best contemporary sources. While it bears a resemblance to the southwestern plate of his monumental four sheet map of southeastern Europe, the image had been revised and enlarged. Although Gastaldi, originally of Piedmont, had been working as a cartographer in Venice since 1539, this is his first large-scale map of Italy. One of the most influential maps of the sixteenth-century, Roberto Almagià referred to it as "truly one of the milestones in the evolution of the cartography of Italy" (see Karrow, p.236). It immediately established itself as the source map of the region until the publication of Giovanni Antonio Magini's Nova descrittione d'Italia in 1620. Some of the most famous derivatives included those by Paolo Forlani, Ortelius and Gerard De Jode. Karrow no, Tooley:1939 no.328, Woodward:1996 watermark 239

Il disegno d'Geografia moderna della provincia di Natolia, et Caramania. Venice: Paolo Forlani, 1564. Engraved map of Turkey, on two joined sheets, 391 x 532mm (Very light discoloration along the upper margin, two vertical creases by central fold.) A rare and important first state of Gastaldi's Asia Minor. It was an especially important subject for Venice at the time, the Serene Republic was often at war with Turkey, yet also depended on oriental trade through the region. The image is centred on the Anatolian Peninsula and the Ottoman capital of Constanople (Istanbul) adorns the upper left of the map, marking the gateway to Europe. The image was finely engraved by Paolo Forlani (fl.1560-1571), who was employed by Gastaldi as the time. This is the first large-scale map of the region to be produced, and it became the source map for the later edtions by the Lafreri School. Karrow no.03, Tooley:1939 no.64, Woodward:1990 no.26.01, Woodward:1996 watermark 43.

      AFRICA - GASTALDI, GIACOMO (c.1500-1566).

      Est: £10,000 - £15,000

La Descrittione dell'Africa. Venice: Paolo Forlani, 1562. Engraved map of Africa by Paolo Forlani, on two joined sheets, 447 x 597mm. A VERY RARE AND HIGHLY IMPORTANT MAP OF AFRICA. It is one of the great masterpieces by Giacomo Gastalidi, the "cosmographer to the Republic of Venice" who produced 109 separate sheet maps during his career. The depiction of Africa had long been a special endeavour for Gastaldi. There is evidence to suggest that he had been working on a large-scale map of the continent since 1545 (Norwich p.11). He published two small-scale images of the Africa; one in his Ptolemy of 1548 and another was included in the second edition of Vol.I of Giambattista Ramusio's Navigationi e viaggi in 1554. However, these works were overshadowed by the cartographic wall mural he devised for Doge Francesco Donato to adorn the Sale dello Scudo of the Ducal Palace (completed 1550). The present map is largely based on his great wall mural, featuring geographic details supplied by travel accounts in Ramusio and from diverse Portuguese sources. Engraved by Paolo Forlani, the coasts are well detailed and feature extensive taxonomy, while the largely mysterious interior is filled with mountain ranges, shaded only to west to indicate the perpetual presence of sunshine. This map served as a maquette for Forlani's 1564 monumental engraving of the continent, and not only served as the source map for many subsequent Italian maps of Africa, but saw its influence cross the Alps to inform important editions made by Ortelius, Gerard De Jode and Jean-Baptiste d'Anville. Karrow no.1, Tooley:1939 no.67, Woodward:1990 no.10.01, Woodward:1996 watermark 129.

Engraved map of Poland and Eastern Europe, on two separate sheets, northern sheet 392 x 523mm, southern sheet 368 x 522mm, trimmed with original extended margins. AN IMPORTANT AND RARE MAP OF OF POLAND AND EASTERN EUROPE; rarely appreciated as a two sheet map, showing the Baltic Sea and numerous northern lakes in the upper section, and the lower section prominently featuring Poland, the city of Cracow and the Wistula River basin. The geography of this map was largely derived from Gerhard Mercator's 1554 map of Europe. Paolo Forlani issued a subsequent edition in 1568. Karrow no, Niewodniczanski no.85, Ruge:1904-16 4:no.85, Tooley:1939 no.453, both sheets have a watermark that does not appear in Woodward:1996; the southern sheet has a watermark of a man with a pickaxe, the northern sheet has a watermark of a crossbow in a circle. La Discrittione dell prima parte dell'Asia. Rome:Antonio Lafreri, 1561. Engraved map of the Middle East by Jacob Bos, 447 x 707mm; Il Disegno Della Seconda Parte Dell'Asia. Engraved map of southwestern Asia centred on the Arabian Peninsula by Fabio Licinio, on two joined sheets, 477 x 736mm; Il Disegno Della Terza Parte Dell'Asia. Engraved map of India and southeastern Asia by Fabio Licinio, on two joined sheets only, 489 x 742mm; both Venice: Giacomo Gastaldi, 1561. (Some discolouration to margins, first two maps vertical creasing with discolouration at central fold, third map, some loss to margin outside of image at lower right corner). Respectively; Karrow nos.1, 30/91 & 30/92; Tooley:1939 nos.48, 54 & 61, Woodward:1996 first map, watermark 292, third map, watermark 239, second map has watermark of an eagle inside a shield, surmounted by a star (not in Woodward:1996). A VERY RARE SET OF THREE HIGHLY IMPORTANT MAPS OF ASIA by the greatest master of Venetian cartography. Having been established in the city for two decades, by the late 1550s Gastaldi, the "cosmographer to the Republic of Venice", was devising the large-scale monumental masterpieces that would confirm his legacy. These three maps represent elements of an intended colossal map of Asia, a project so ambitious that it was never realised. Geographically, they are based on the small-scale maps Gastaldi previously made of the continent for Giambattista Ramusio's Navigationi et viaggi. The first map is a faithful second edition of Gastaldi's 1559 original work, produced by Antonio Lafreri, the French-born publisher based in Rome. The image is centred on Persia, and the curious depiction of the Caspian Sea in the ovoid form it invariably assumed until the 1730s. The artistic virtuosity of the engraving betrays the hand of Jacob Bos, who enlivens the maritime spaces with numerous ships, and the Steppes with Tartars' tents. The second map, in the first state, was produced by Gastaldi himself and was finely engraved by Fabio Licinio. It is centred on the Arabian Peninsula, and encompasses the area from the Nile valley to the mouth of the Indus. The third map, of the same producer and engraver, lacks the two additional southern sections, but nevertheless provides a magnificent perspective of India and the Malay Peninsula and southern China. Unusually, it contains a gazetteer of place names. (3)

[River Danube]. Rome: Antonio Lafreri, 1560. Engraved map of the River Danube by Fabio Licinio, on two separate sheets, overall 351 x 1032mm, trimmed with original extended margins. A very rare and important map of the basin of the River Danube, issued on two separate sheets. On 29 April, 1559 Gastaldi was granted a privilege by the Venetian senate to print a large four-sheet map of southeastern Europe, with each sheet conceived such that it could function independently as a complete map. Later that year, Gastaldi published the two northern quadrants of the planned composition. The plates he used were acquired in 1560 by Antonio Lafreri to print his own edition, in which he intially replaced Gastaldi's name with his own. This present map is Lafreri's scarce second version, in which his name has been removed from the cartouche on the eastern sheet. The image covers the territory from Venice to the mouth of the Danube on the Black Sea. A rare map, Karrow cites only two copies of the eastern plate of this edition. Karrow no.1 (variant), Tooley:1939 no.27, watermark of a man with a pickaxe, not in Woodward:1996. (2)
