    George Howell Gay Wisconsin, Chicago, New York, (1858-1931) rural landscape with wetlands watercolor on paper Signed lower left. Biography from the Archives of askART: George H. Gay was well known for his watercolor landscapes, seascapes and paintings of rivers and ships, mostly along the shores of New England. Gay also painted snowscapes, but these are scarcer. It is unusual to find an oil painting by this artist, as he worked mainly in watercolor. Some of his works display a tonalist aesthetic. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 2, 1858, and lived in Chicago and then in 1889, settled in Bronxville, New York. Gay was a pupil of Paul Brown and Henry Elkins in Chicago. He is known to have exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1890; Boston Art Club, 1890-1900; and Boston Art Club, 1897. Shortly before his death in 1931, George Gay's address in 1929 was known to be 100 Kraft Ave., Bronxville, NY.     George Howell Gay (American, 1858-1931), antique watercolor painting on paper depicting a coastal beach setting with waves breaking onshore, distant ships at sea, and birds in flight. Scattered stones appear along the shoreline, with a low horizon and distant land. Signed and dated 1890 lower right. Presented matted under glass in a natural wood frame. Approximate sight size 11.25" x 21.5". Dimensions: 18.5 X 28.25 X 1.25 in. Condition: Good overall antique condition, with toning and scattered surface foxing and spotting. There is visible mat burn and discoloration to the paper edges. The frame exhibits normal storage wear along the edges and corners. Not examined outside of the frame.     George Howell Gay (1858-1931) Watercolor & Gouache on paper, signed lower right "Geo. Howell Gay", piece measures 9 x 21 inches and 20 x 32 inches w/frame. George Howell Gay’s formative years were spent as far away from the ocean as one can get, yet he devoted the greater part of his mature painting career to depicting the pristine shorelines of the Atlantic seaboard from New Jersey to Maine. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and educated in Chicago under Paul Brown and Henry Elkins, Gay eventually moved to Bronxville, New York, just outside of Manhattan, by 1889. He worked in all media, but was especially adept at watercolor, which allowed him to capture the transparency of churning seas and atmospheric qualities of sunlight and clouds. Gay also found inspiration on the shores of Marblehead, Nahant, and Cape Ann, Massachusetts, as well as Narragansett, Rhode Island, and Monhegan Island, Maine. Gay’s seascapes were exhibited at the Boston Art Club’s 1890 and 1900 annuals, at the National Academy of Design in 1900 and at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1897. He also showed at smaller venues in Indianapolis and at department store showcases in New York and the Midwest, such as Gimbels, Wanamaker’s and Ayres, which for many decades helped bring many artists’ names to the general public
