      (Anversa, 1707 ; 1791) Amorini che giocano Olio su tela, cm 90,6X153,8 Provenienza: New York, Sotheby's, 8 ottobre 1993, lotto 79 (come Marten Jozef Geeraerts) New York, Sotheby's, 7 ottobre 1994, lotto 116 (come Marten Jozef Geeraerts) Collezione privata Marten Jozef Geeraerts nacque ad Anversa e inizialmente si dedicò alla giurisprudenza studiando al Collegio dei Gesuiti. Tuttavia, preferì dedicarsi all'arte divenendo allievo di Abraham Godijn e nel 1731 risulta iscritto alla corporazione di San Luca. Nel 1741 divenne uno dei sei direttori dell'Accademia di Anversa, celebre per le sue opere a grisaille, dipingendo eleganti bassorilievi d'ispirazione classica e composizioni trompe l'oeil nello stile del suo contemporaneo Jacob de Wit. Questi due artisti divennero i più importanti esponenti di questo genere durante il Settecento in Olanda e nelle Fiandre. Questo genere di opere era notevolmente apprezzato per decorare le residenze nobiliari ed edifici pubblici, come avvenne ad esempio per l'Orfanotrofio di Leida, inoltre, uno dei più importanti committenti di Geeraerts fu Guglielmo V.
