    Mar. 29, 2025

Frank Gehry (Born 1929) Canadian/American, Unique 1995 Knoll Chair and Ottoman

    Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Frank Gehry (Born 1929) Canadian/American, Unique 1995 Knoll Chair and Ottoman. Frame constructed of hard black lacquered white maple veneer strips, laminated with high-bonding glue. Marked on underside of ottoman, signed on underside of chair. Gehry came to Knoll in 1989 with the idea of designing furniture inspired by bushel baskets, and his designs debuted at the the Museum of Modern Art three years later. This is a great opportunity to own an early production example for much less, as a brand new chair and ottoman retails for $14,000.  Condition: Excellent, barely any signs of use.  Size: 32 x 28 x 33 in.  #5904 .  Frank Gehry was born Frank Owen Goldberg on February 28th, 1929 in Toronto, Ontario, and spent much of his youth playing in his grandfather’s hardware store, which instilled in him an interest in building and utilitarian materials. His mother introduced him to the world of art, and in 1947 the family immigrated to the United States, settling in California. He studied at Los Angeles City College while working a series of odd jobs, first as a delivery truck driver, then as a radio announcer, and then exploring chemical engineering. Finally, after taking an architecture class on a whim, he discovered his calling, and went on to graduate from the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture in 1954. That same year he changed his surname to Gehry after his then-wife expressed concern about antisemitism. After serving two years in the United States Army he moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he studied city planning at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. He developed a socially responsible attitude towards politics and architecture which did not mesh well with more conservative, old-fashioned schools of thought, and he dropped out of his graduate program to start a furniture manufacturing company called Easy Edges, specializing in creating artistic pieces out of cardboard. He returned to Los Angeles to work for Victor Gruen Associates, and in 1957 he was given the chance to design his first private residence, the “David Cabin,” which contained many details that would later become synonymous with his style including natural surfaces and strong Asian influences. In 1961 Gehry moved to Paris for a year to work for architect Andre Remondet, before returning the following year to establish a practice in Los Angeles that eventually became Frank Gehry and Associates in 1967 (later renamed Gehry Partners in 2001). His earliest works were private residences, including renovating his own by wrapping a metallic exterior around the original building to leave many of the old details visible. He began to work non-stop, first embracing the California “funk” art movement in the late 60s and then incorporating more and more nontraditional media and deconstructivist techniques throughout the 70s. The 1990s became his heyday, as he brought a philosophy of all architecture as sculpture to each work he produced, from the California Aerospace Museum to the Port Olimpic in Barcelona to the so-called “Dancing House” in Prague. His most iconic piece, the Guggenheim Museum finished in 1997 in Bilbao, Spain, had a massive transformative impact on the economy and cultural renewal of the city, and led to the term “Bilbao Effect” to describe such occurrences, as well as the term “Starchitect” being coined to describe architects whose works were so important, innovative, and paradigm shifting that they essentially achieve “rock star” status among both fellow architects and the world at large. Gehry has received numerous awards over the years, including being made a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the Japanese Praemium Imperiale, the Prince of Asturias Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He has also been given nearly twenty honorary doctorates, and his works in the 2000s and beyond have shaped the skylines of most major cities, from the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles to the Beekman Tower in New York City. In January 2011 Gehry joined USC as the Judge Widney Professor of Architecture, and has since held teaching positions at Harvard University, Yale University, the University of Toronto, and the Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich. In addition to his architecture, Gehry has designed hundreds of exhibitions for museums and galleries, and made a line of furniture for Knoll, Emeco, and Heller Furniture, as well as jewelry for Tiffany & Co. One of his firm’s spin-off companies, Gehry Technologies, was also responsible for major innovations in architectural and aerospace software, and after nearly 100 years Gehry remains one of the most important Postmodern designers of all time.

UK Architect Frank Gehry explored the medium of cardboard in the 1970s and 1980s. Encouraged by Vitra, which invited architects and designers to explore new technologies without constraints, he developed iconic furniture pieces from laminated layers of corrugated cardboard, utilizing the possibilities of this material as he would for an architectural model. The Wiggle Chair and Beaver Chair perfectly illustrate this innovative approach. The Wiggle Chair captivates with its fluid, sinuous curves, offering a bold sculptural aesthetic. In contrast, the Beaver Chair, produced in a limited edition of 100 pieces in 1987, stands out with its wider channels, creating a "cushioned" effect. These pieces showcase Gehry's ingenuity and his ability to transform an ordinary material into functional works of art.
