b. 1904 - d. 1991

Better known as Dr. Seuss, Theodor Geisel studied at Dartmouth College, where he served as editor-in-chief of their humor magazine. He briefly attended Oxford University in England but returned to America to pursue a career as a cartoonist. Geisel eventually landed in advertising, using his illustration art to promote Standard Oil. In 1937, after multiple rejections, he finally published his first children’s book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.

Dozens of books would follow, featuring rhymes and Dr. Seuss drawings. These included classics like The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. On the side, he was also a political cartoonist, speaking out against discrimination and social injustice. Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Signed edition of Thidwick the Big Hearted Moose. Along with the signature Seuss drew a Bingle Bug, with the caption "extra bingle bug for Andy Gribben from Dr. Seuss". Theodor Seuss (Dr Seuss) Geisel (1904 - 1991) was active/lived in Massachusetts, California. Theodor Geisel is known for Children's book illustration. Dr. Seuss was born Theodore Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 2, 1904. After attending Dartmouth College and Oxford University, he began a career in advertising. His advertising cartoons, featuring Quick, Henry, the Flit!, appeared in several leading American magazines. Dr. Seuss' first children's book, And To Think I Saw It On Mulberry Street hit the market in 1937, and the world of children's literature was changed forever! In 1957, Seuss's The Cat in the Hat became the prototype for one of Random House's best- selling series, "Beginner Books". This popular series combined engaging stories with outrageous illustrations and playful sounds to teach basic reading skills. Brilliant, playful, and always respectful of children, Dr. Seuss charmed his way into the consciousness of four generations of youngsters and parents. In the process, he helped kids learn to read. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 and two Academy Awards, Seuss was the author and illustrator of 44 childrens books, some of which have been made into audio cassettes, animated television specials, and videos for children of all ages. Even after his death in 1991, Dr. Seuss continues to be the best-selling author of children's books in the world. Theodor Seuss Geisel was born 2 March 1904 in Springfield, MA. He graduated Dartmouth College in 1925, and proceeded on to Oxford University with the intent of acquiring a doctorate in literature. At Oxford he met Helen Palmer, whom he wed in 1927. He returned from Europe in 1927, and began working for a magazine called Judge, the leading humor magazine in America at the time, submitting both cartoons and humorous articles for them. Additionally, he was submitting cartoons to Life, Vanity Fair and Liberty. In some of his works, he'd made reference to an insecticide called Flit. These references gained notice, and led to a contract to draw comic ads for Flit. This association lasted 17 years, gained him national exposure, and coined the catch phrase "Quick, Henry, the Flit!" In 1936 on the way to a vacation in Europe, listening to the rhythm of the ship's engines, he came up with And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, which was then promptly rejected by the first 43 publishers he showed it to. Eventually in 1937 a friend published the book for him, and it went on to at least moderate success. During WW II, Geisel joined the army and was sent to Hollywood. Captain Geisel would write for Frank Capra's Signal Corps Unit (for which he won the Legion of Merit) and do documentaries (he won Oscar's for Hitler Lives and Design for Death). He also created a cartoon called Gerald McBoing-Boing, which also won him an Oscar. In May of 1954, Life magazine published a report concerning illiteracy among school children. The report said, among other things, that children were having trouble to read because their books were boring. This inspired Geisel's publisher, and prompted him to send Geisel a list of 400 words he felt were important, asked him to cut the list to 250 words (the publishers idea of how many words at one time a first grader could absorb), and write a book. Nine months later, Geisel, using 220 of the words given to him published The Cat in the Hat, which went on to instant success. In 1960 Bennett Cerf bet Geisel $50 that he couldn't write an entire book using only fifty words. The result was Green Eggs and Ham. Cerf never paid the $50. Helen Palmer Geisel died in 1967. Theodor Geisel married Audrey Stone Diamond in 1968. He died 24 September 1991.

Dr. Seuss?s most iconic self-portrait ran in the July 6, 1957 issue of The Saturday Evening Post. Appearing just four months after the launch of The Cat in the Hat, this classic portrait depicts Seuss as his mischievous alter ego, complete with red and white stovepipe hat, cat ears, and the Cat?s now famous red bow tie. Ted and his hatted Cat shared an affinity for bow ties, each wearing them throughout their long lives.
