    Benedetto Gennari der Jüngere

    Est: €2,600 - €5,200

105 cm x 83 cm. Attributed to Benedetto Gennari the Younger (1633 - 1715). Oil on canvas, laid down on panel.

(Cento 1633–1715 Bologna) Portrait of a young gentleman, three-quarter length, wearing a black doublet with a lace collar and sleeves over a white shirt with red ribbons, oil on canvas, 110.5 x 94 cm, framed Provenance: Private European collection We are grateful to Marco Riccomini for endorsing the attribution of the present painting and for his help in cataloguing this lot. His written expertise accompanies this lot. Gennari presents the sitter, an unidentified young gentleman, standing in three-quarter-length, with one hand resting on his hip. His elevated status is conveyed through the elaborate clothing he wears, enriched with white lace and red ribbons. On his right, a sword is partially visible, signifying the sitter’s noble, military background. Riccomini, dates this portrait to before Gennari’s twenty-year sojourn abroad, and compares this work to the portraits of Ricciarda Cibo Gonzaga and her husband Alfonso Gonzaga of Novellara, both painting in 1666 in the Galleria Estense, Modena (inv. nos. 257 and 43, see P. Bagni, Benedetto Gennari e la bottega del Guercino, Bologna 1986 p. 37, no. 19; pp. 38-39, no. 20). Benedetto Gennari was born in Cento into a family of painters and was trained by his uncle Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called ‘il Guercino’. After moving to Bologna in 1643, he later travelled to France in 1672, working for the nobility, before settling in England in 1674, where James, Duke of York (later James II), and his wife Mary of Modena became his principal patrons. He also received commissions from King Charles II, producing portraits and mythological scenes for Windsor Castle. Celebrated as a portraitist, Gennari combined refined observation with the elegance of French classicism and the flattering conventions of seventeenth-century portraiture. Following the Revolution of 1688, he joined the Stuart court in exile at Saint-Germain-en-Laye until 1692. On his return to Italy, his sophisticated style ensured his success, and he became a founding member of the Accademia Clementina in Bologna in 1710, later serving as director of the Scuola del Nudo.

MYSTISCHE VERMÄHLUNG DER HEILIGEN KATHARINA Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 99 x 74 cm. In profiliertem Rahmen. Literatur: Vgl. Nicosetta Roio, Benedetto Gennari, in: La scuola del Guercino, Modena 2004. (1420327) (2) (13) Benedetto Gennari, 1633 – 1715 Bologna, attributed THE MYSTIC MARRIAGE OF SAINT CATHERINE Oil on canvas. Relined. 99 x 74 cm. As far as style is concerned, several examples of paintings can be compared with works by Gennari. However, the influence of his teacher Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, better known as Guercino (1591 – 1666) is obvious. Benedetto Gennari, Circle of, The Death of Cleopatra, 17th C.

    Est: €2,400 - €3,120

Oil on canvas, relined Italy, 17th Century Circle of Benedetto Gennari (1633 -1715) – Italian Baroque painter Gilt stucco frame Dimensions: 119 x 91 cm Provenance: Private Collection, Europe Exotic Queen and Femme Fatale - Cleopatra has inspired numerous artists from the Renaissance onwards The present depiction of the dying Cleopatra is the work of a painter from the circle of Benedetto Gennari, a student of Guercino (1591-1666). Gennari mainly depicted allegorical and mythological themes, and he was also a master of portraits. Gennari has often visited the subject of Cleopatra (69 BC - 30 BC). She was the last queen of ancient Egypt. Even such important figures such as Caesar and Mark Antony succumbed to her charm. According to ancient sources, Cleopatra died by a snake bite. In the present depiction, the dramatic event was implemented through the strategic use of light and shadow. The painting is well presented. The canvas has been relined. The paint surface has been consolidated to the background and is thin in parts. Small scattered areas of retouching affect the surface. Inspection under UV light reveals retouching to the flesh tones, the background and the costume. Die gilt stucco frame shows light wear consistent with age and use. The overall dimensions, framed, are 132 x 102.5 cm, and the stretcher measures 119 x 91 cm. Benedetto Gennari II (1633-1715) Benedetto Gennari belonged to a dynasty of painters. His teacher Guercino was a grandson of Benedetto Gennari I (1563-1658). In 1672, Gennari II went to Paris at the court of King Louis XIV, and received numerous commissions. In 1674, he moved to London and became court painter to Charles II of England and his successor James II. When James II was dethroned, Gennari followed him to the court in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. In 1692, Benedetto Gennari returned to Bologna. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

BENEDETTO GENNARI Judith with the Head of Holofernes

    Est: £29,000 - £33,000

BENEDETTO GENNARI Judith with the Head of Holofernes Oil on canvas This painting is very probably by Benedetto Gennari, who is well-known for being both Emilian master Guercino’s nephew and the heir to his thriving workshop. Gennari’s style is very similar but easy to tell apart from that of his far more celebrated uncle, whose dramatic chiaroscuro tones he emulates, yet without ever achieving the extraordinary nuanced solemnity typical of Guercino’s work. The difference between the uncle and the nephew is all the more glaring in this canvas because the hand of both artists’ work in the composition is very easy to decipher. Gennari undoubtedly afforded due consideration to the Judith and Holofernes now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Brest, a picture which his uncle had painted for an apothecary named Giacomo Zanoni, as we can read in his Book of Accounts for 1 April 1651. The stylistic difference between the picture under discussion here and the prototype now in Brest is clear, yet it is useful in helping us to de- termine that the face of Judith in our picture is very clearly by the hand of Guercino himself. This in no way diminishes the freshness or the power of Gennari’s work, which is clearer in the handling of the colour contrasts and very sharp in the definition of the drapery, certainly not taking second place to Guercino’s contribution. What is missing compared to the Judith and Holofernes in Brest is the sense of theatre and the breadth of the stage setting, where Judith’s rapid, slicing movement with her sword still betrays the legacy of Guido Reni. The rendering of the figures in our picture is thus slightly less rigid than in the prototype, yet no less effective for all that. We would argue that it is also useful to compare the picture with a Holy Family with the Young St. John the Baptist and St. Anne now in the Musée des Beaux Arts in Dijon, in which the contrast between the faces of the youthful Mary and the older St. Anne echo the contrast between the freshness of Judith and the lined face of her servant in our picture (see, in the Federico Zeri Photographic Library, entry 59294 folder 0549 in the section devoted to Benedetto Gennari). And finally, it is worth comparing this painting with a canvas of the same subject now in the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister in Kassel. The Kassel picture is a blatant copy of the Brest prototype and unquestionably an autograph work by Gennari, yet softer in its overall execution than our painting here. The date for our picture should be close to that of the Brest painting, thus around 1655 when Gennari was only a little over twenty years old. The picture’s state of con- servation is excellent, both in terms of the support and in terms of the adherence of the colour to the priming coat on the canvas. 124.5 x 118 cm

Benedetto Gennari, 1633 Cento - 1715 Bologna BILDNIS EINER ADLIGEN DAME MIT PERLENKETTE UND EINER MASKE IN DER HAND Öl auf Leinwand. 100 x 75,5 cm.
