Théodore Géricault Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor, Lithographer, b. 1791 - d. 1824

(b Rouen, France, 1791; d Paris, France, 1824) French Painter. An extremely talented young student, Jean-Louis André Theodore Géricault began his training in Paris under the direction of Carle Vernet and later Pierre-Narcisse Guerin in a neoclassical temperament.* In 1810, Géricault furthered his studies at the Louvre, imitating works by masters such as Titian and Rembrandt van Rijn. In the coming years Géricault developed a style, making a distinct effort to avoid Neoclassicism, the dominant movement of the time. Géricault began to generate his own stylistic tendencies, becoming a forerunner of Romanticism, a movement endorsing emotion over reason. After spending time in Italy, the artist submitted Officer of the Imperial Guard to the Paris Salon in 1812 and received great attention. In 1819, Theodore Géricault exhibited his most acclaimed work, The Raft of the Medusa, depicting the ghastly aftermath of a shipwreck. While Géricault received the winning award at the Salon, he also dealt with an overwhelming controversial reaction. The painting underwent political scrutiny as well as great debate between Neoclassical and Romantic followers. In 1822, Géricault became enthralled in the visual representation of human emotion on the face, creating several portraits of detached, yet psychologically piercing portraits of the insane who were committed at the psychiatric institution of the artist’s friend, Dr. Etienne-Jean Georget.** Painted with a heightened realism, each portrait represents a different misery or illness. In his final years, Géricault began ambitious compositions that he was unable to complete due to his declining health. Jean-Louis André Géricault died in 1824 in Paris, France following a struggle with tuberculosis. THÉODORE GERICAULT Retour de Russie. Color lithograph printed in black and tan on cream wove paper, 1818. 445x332 mm; with thread margins outside the border line. Likely the first state (of 2), before the printed title lower center. A very good impression of this extremely scarce, early lithograph. According to Delteil, extremely scarce in both the first and second states. He cites 11 impressions in the first state and 5 impressions in the second state; we locate fewer than 10 other impressions in both states at auction in the past 30 years. Gericault (1791-1824) was a French painter and lithographer, one of the pioneers of the Romantic movement. He exhibited his first major work, The Charging Chasseur, now in the Louvre, Paris, at the Paris Salon of 1812. This was followed by his most ambitious work, The Raft of the Medusa, 1818-19, a monumental oil on canvas now also in the Louvre, Paris, which is a hallmark of the Romantic movement. The current lithograph, created only two decades following the discovery of the technique for artistic purposes, and printed from two stones for added color to achieve the appearance of a drawing, represents the winter 1812 retreat of battered French soldiers following their defeat in the Napoleonic invasion of Russia. Delteil 13.

THÉODORE GÉRICAULT Le Porte-Étendard. Lithograph, circa 1817. 169x145 mm; 6 5/8x5 3/4 inches, wide margins. One of only several proofs. A superb, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce, early lithograph. According to Delteil, "Très rare." He lists a mere eight impressions in public collections and only two in private collections, including this impression formerly in the Rouart collection. Provenance: Alexis Hubert Rouart (Lugt 2187a, lower right recto, faded). Géricault's (1791-1824) first major work, The Charging Chasseur, now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1812, and this, one of his earliest lithographs, reflecting a similar subject, was created shortly thereafter. These pre-date The Raft of the Medusa, oil on canvas, 1819, and are among his most celebrated works and a masterpiece of the Romantic movement. Delteil 3.

THÉODORE GÉRICAULT , ROUEN, 1791 - PARIS, 1824 Portrait of a shipwrecked man, known as 'the father' Oil on canvas 60 x 45.7 cm The haggard look, the olive complexion, the emaciated features of this face offer all the characteristics of misfortune and suffering, and suggest the ordeals through which this man has passed. The tight frame of the composition, the violent and frontal lighting, the black background also contribute to the enhancement of the painful accents of this 'portrait' whose bare chest reveals protruding clavicles that add to its famished appearance. However, it is not strictly speaking a portrait but rather a study carried out by Géricault in preparation for his monumental painting, The Raft of the Medusa. Indeed, several models were called upon to create the characters that make up his shipwreck so that the artist could create a synthesis of their different expressions and physiognomies. While some models remain anonymous, such as the patient at Beaujon Hospital, others are clearly identified, such as the professional model Cadamour or the painter's friend Lebrun. The latter was notably portrayed by Géricault when he was suffering from jaundice, which gave his face the cadaverous look that the painter was looking for. We know from his biographer Charles Clément that he painted several portraits of Lebrun for the character of the 'father holding his dying son in his lap', in Sèvres, where he was still convalescing. On the strength of his various quests for expression, Géricault refined his 'father' character, which he placed in the lower left-hand foreground of his painting. The most popular figure in Le Radeau, this old man received special attention from the artist, who made at least one replica of him. This portrait thus constitutes, alongside the one preserved in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Besançon, the second testimony to this search for the expression of despair for the most emblematic character in his work. Théodore Géricault (1791-1824) was the first French romantic painter. Trained in Carle Vernet's studio, he studied with Guérin. Although he failed the Prix de Rome competition, he left for Italy in 1816 to discover the painters of the Renaissance. He was then strongly struck by the works of Michelangelo, whose influence is evident in the powerful anatomies of his flagship work, The Raft of the Medusa. Exhibited at the 1819 Salon, the story of this event, elevated to the rank of a history painting by its monumental format, caused a scandal and divided the critics. The horror of the subject fascinated, provoking both disgust for this 'mass of corpses' deemed too realistic, and admiration for a modern painting with a political and topical subject. Disappointed, Géricault decides to leave for England with his painting, where he discovers the landscapes of Turner and Constable, who invite him to enrich the registers of his painting. Fascinated by the equestrian world, Géricault was also a painter of horses - but also of felines - to which he devoted many paintings, to the point of creating true 'portraits' with an almost human appearance. He died as a result of a fall from a horse. Certificate: Bruno Chenique Signatur: Signed top left

THÉODORE GÉRICAULT , ROUEN, 1791 - PARIS, 1824 Presumed portrait of Madame Elisabeth de Dreux Oil on canvas 39.9 x 31 cm Here is a bust portrait of a young woman posing in front of a landscape with a tormented sky. Were it not for her high-waisted, ruffled dress and her sophisticated hairstyle with bun and scrolls that betray her membership in bourgeois Restoration society, one might think of an Italian Renaissance portrait. Indeed, the mid-body framing with a distant and timeless landscape as a background brings to mind portraits by Botticelli, Bellini or even Vinci's Mona Lisa. The open window on the world in front of which the model poses allows the painter to imagine a landscape that enhances her and also translates her moods. Perfectly lit, dressed in a white that is barely softened by a colourful shawl, the young woman, slightly off-centre, stares at us with a shy look. Behind her, a mountainous landscape with bluish reliefs to indicate its remoteness, reaches her shoulder height, leaving most of the composition to the sky. This one, deep blue on the horizon, is crossed by dark clouds, in a very romantic spirit, without any intention of meteorological effects. The model is the wife of a friend of the painter, Pierre-Alfred de Dreux, architect and Prix de Rome. Géricault will also paint a portrait of their children. THÉODORE GÉRICAULT , ROUEN, 1791 - PARIS, 1824 Two lions pulling a chariot after Peter-Paul Rubens (detail of L'Entrevue du roi et de Marie de Médicis à Lyon, 9 November 1600, Musée du Louvre, Paris). Oil on canvas 45.8 x 55.2 cm Like two horses harnessed to a chariot, these two lions show behaviour similar to that of equestrians: one advances its leg as if on parade while the other seems to neigh. The team, of which only the front of the chariot can be seen, is indeed incongruous because it is allegorical. The idea is to evoke a historical event in a mythological register where, in the original canvas painted by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), Henry IV, in the guise of Jupiter, meets Marie de Médicis, in the guise of Juno, in the city of Lyon, evoked by a young woman seated in a chariot drawn by these two eponymous lions. Géricault chose to focus on the felines in Rubens' painting, ridding himself of the putti originally placed on their backs. An animal painter as much as a portraitist or history painter, Géricault liked to paint his bestiary from life, but he also knew how to copy it from the great masters, notably by visiting the Louvre, an inexhaustible source of inspiration. From Rubens, he reproduces here the style, the tones and the vivacity, but he brings his personal experience with a freer touch that recalls the lions observed from life at the Jardin des plantes.
