(b Boston, MA, 1813; d Roxbury, MA, 1891) American Painter. Samuel Lancaster Gerry, inspired and influenced by the works of Thomas Cole, lacked formal teaching. However, in 1837, Gerry spent three years traveling through Western Europe and experimented with his style. Warwick Castle is a medieval castle located in Warwick, the county town of Warwickshire, and situated at a bend of the river Avon. At first it was a wooden fort, built by William the Conqueror during 1068. The original motte-and-bailey castle was rebuilt in stone during the 12th century. During the Hundred Years War the facade opposite the town of Warwick was re-fortified, and the castle was used as a stronghold until the 17th century. In 1604 James I granted the castle to Sir Fulke Greville, who turned it into a country house. It remained in the Greville family until 1978, when it was bought by the Tussauds group.
