              Oct. 01, 2023

              Yusof Ghani (b. 1950) Ombak: Sandora, 2013

              Est: RM26,000 - RM40,000

Ombak should not be taken in its literal meaning as ‘Waves' but a soothing spiritual séance of painting through one's emotional wavelength. The series was first unveiled in the exhibition, Ombak: Breath Of Life at Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery in 2014. Yusof Ghani started out doing Art-related jobs for 10 years without formal education. He was artist-illustrator at the Agriculture Ministry (1967), instructor in the Fisheries Institute, Penang (1971) and a graphic artist at Radio-Television Malaysia (1977). Then he got a scholarship to study for his BFA at the George Mason University in the United States (1981), and MFA at the Catholic University in Washington, USA (1983). On his return, he lectured at the Universiti ITM with the rank of Associate Professor, but unleashed some of the most memorable art series: Tari, Topeng, Wayang, Hijau, Segerak, Biring, Wajah, Ombak and Kuda. He singlehandedly organised the Shah Alam Biennale involving artists from 15 countries in 2016. Yusof Ghani made his London foray with an exhibition, Segerak VI - Transcendent Figures, at the Asia House in early April 2017. Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers with partners Galeri Prima and Pinkguy Gallery organised Segerak VIII: Utopia, the final edition of Segerak series, in August 2019. The exhibition received good responses.

Yusof Ghani (b. 1950) Segerak Series 'Indulgement', 2018

              Est: RM32,000 - RM50,000

In the Segerak series, Yusof uses the human figure to reflect on issues related to humanity, derived from history and personal experiences. The artist focuses on the process of human movement within space, carefully modelled with rhythmic outlines of the figures and the shadows. Gestural strokes were swiftly recorded to highlight the powerful movement of outstretched arms and limbs, with careful shading of the muscles. He delves into progress, enlightenment, and focuses on what should always be the anchor of future developments - tradition and culture. Segerak revels in the antithesis of life, of celebration and aggression, triumph and conflicts, all embodied in the human figure. After crashing into the art scene with his Tari series, he followed up with Topeng, Wayang, Hijau, Segerak, Biring, Wajah, Ombak and Kuda. Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers with partners Galeri Prima and Pinkguy Gallery organised Segerak VIII: Utopia, the final edition of Segerak series, in August 2019.

              Yusof Ghani (b. 1950) Biring XXI, 2006

              Est: RM90,000 - RM130,000

It may come as a surprise that Yusof Ghani's second best performing series in Malaysian auction records was a Biring, garnering a premium of RM313,600. Biring was first unleashed in March 2007, coming after the first phase of his Segerak series. It is arguably the most violent of Yusof Ghani's series, derived principally from the blood-sport of cock-fighting (berlaga ayam), popular in Southeast Asia until it was banned. But to Yusof Ghani, it symbolises human strife and beauty with its flurry of feathers, and even a dash of heroism, in a combative nature where the cockerels' spurs are laced with lethal poison. It is about power, might and agility. Artists like Indonesia's Affandi, the Philippines' Rivera, Cambodia's Sin Rithy and Singapore's performance artist Tang Da Wu have all flirted with the theme. Yusof Ghani started out doing Art-related jobs for 10 years without formal education. He was artist-illustrator at the Agriculture Ministry (1967), instructor in the Fisheries Institute, Penang (1971) and a graphic artist at Radio-Television Malaysia (1977). Est: RM16,000 - RM28,000

Topeng (Mask) series by Yusof Ghani was conceived after an inspirational trip to Sarawak in 1988 and 1991 where he was captivated by the mask rituals of ethnic Kenyah and Kayan whose villages are located two hours outside the city of Kuching. The idea to explore deeper into the mystical and mysterious world of masks first transpired upon his frequent visits to the National Museum in Kuala Lumpur. Yusof Ghani started out doing Art-related jobs for 10 years without formal education. Yusof Ghani's Tari series were first exhibited in 1989, in an exhibition at Galeri Citra, and is one of the artist's most popular series to date. Executed in fluid lines, the artwork consists of human figures depicted in several dance postures and features a strong presentation of gestural movement and figure ground relationship. Yusof Ghani started out doing Art-related jobs for 10 years without formal education. Est: RM75,000 - RM100,000

Yusof Ghani’s paintings, according to many, have shifted from something dark and mysterious to take the air of something cheery and elegant. However, the artist himself said that his social commentaries did not change despite the change of atmosphere. It still had social remarks. He also said life is a bit like the lives of humans. Purposeless and unorchestrated at times, but it brings a lot of pleasure. This social commentary was brought to canvas, based on his studies on human behaviour teamed with lines, colours and motion. The end-result of a seamless flow of lovely colours amalgamating with one another was not intentionally meant to look aesthetic and flowing. The initial lines and sketches were rough, chaotic and arbitrary, to portray the human behaviour of being wild and free.

              Est: RM28,000 - RM40,000

Yusof Ghani’s illustrious artistic journey reaches a zenith with his captivating “Kalam” series, a testament to his mastery in melding profound conceptualism with visceral aesthetics. In this series, Ghani’s canvas becomes a sacred palimpsest, where the gestural markings of his “kalam” (Arabic for pen) intersect with layers of texture, echoing the rich tradition of calligraphy while transcending its confines. The juxtaposition of bold strokes and intricate layers creates a visual symphony, offering a glimpse into the artist’s contemplative process and his quest to encapsulate the essence of the divine. Ghani’s nuanced colour palette further enhances the spiritual underpinnings of each composition, as deep ochres and solemn indigos intertwine, invoking a meditative dialogue between earthly realms and celestial aspirations.

YUSOF GHANI : Siri Topeng Wajah, 1999

              Est: RM18,000 - RM30,000

The Topeng series came about when Yusof Ghani paid a visit to Sarawak. It was here that he discovered the ethnic Kayan and Kenyah tribes wore ceremonial masks to cure illnesses, especially during ceremonial rituals. This gave him insight into the spiritual life of the people there, and consequently gave him inspiration for the series. It was said that he began to paint what he saw as the cure to his own state of spiritual illness, having doubted whether his works reflected his true self, or merely an adopted persona. As such, both the paintings and the masks hinted at something: the bolder and the more grotesque the masks, the more powerful they become – and the more they heal. Perhaps, this was a form of the artist dealing with his own personal demons at the time.

Inspired by the masks of Kenyah and Kayan from his trip to Sarawak, the cultural motifs played a major part in Yusof Ghani’s Siri Topeng. It merely is an expression of faces, combining oil on canvas in controlled structures, intensified by outlines which shows the artist’s effort in exploring new forms and visual approaches that are to the point, solid, structured and meaningful. The figure, seen as a formative generator and embodiment of movement is radically altered by Yusof Ghani. He dismantles and transforms them into planes of colour and curving lines. They are almost forceful, and at times, even awkward.

Embodied with life force, the artist focused on a tall and sturdy tree with vertical extending branches that fills the composition. The work reflects Yusof's deep interest in nature and is an exquisite piece contemplating trees expressed through distinctive colours, rhythmic lines, and swift brushstrokes, enveloped with a golden glow. His landscapes reflect the poetic experience of nature, imbued with a peaceful aura. Yusof Ghani started out doing Art-related jobs for 10 years without formal education. Est: MYR120,000 - MYR180,000

Executed in 1999, Senggarang reveals Yusof Ghani's perception of the natural world, exemplified through the harmony of colours. Powerful swaths of exuberant brushwork were applied with force across the canvas in sweeping motions, ardently capturing the spiritual ambience of land, water, and luxuriant vegetation. Details such as the intense, diagonal strokes in the foreground in rich shades of red were integrated with delicate hilly terrains to create a profound sense of depth and grandeur. The artist's paintings in the Hijau Series are distinguished by lyrical gestures, nuances of light and dark, and intricate structures accented by hints of green – a colour of hope, peace, and regeneration. The Hijau Series conceived in 1998 marked a captivating shift from the figurative towards addressing the importance of nature and man's duty to preserve it, leading to the fervent exploration of new forms revealing the interconnectedness of our world and exudes the poetic sentiment of belonging to a larger entity. Yusof Ghani's art career started in 1981, when he got a scholarship to study for his BFA at the George Mason University, which he followed up with his MFA at the Catholic University (1983). Before, for 10 years and without formal art education, he had dabbled in various art-related jobs. America was a great eye-opener to him, and when he returned, he lectured at the Mara Institute of Technology. His career highlights include his London debut in 2017, in a solo called Segerak VI - Transcendant Figures, at the Asia House. His series include Tari, Topeng, Wayang, Hijau, Biring, Wajah, Ombak, Segerak, and Kuda. Yusof organised the Shah Alam Biennale in 2016.

It is composed in a landscape orientation and parallel to the cinema. Perceived as 'Topeng with movement', Wayang ponders upon life challenges and deceitfulness among members of the society. Wayang was first displayed at Galeri Citra in Kuala Lumpur in 1997, after a transitional show called Topeng-Wayang at the Jenkins Johnson Gallery in San Francisco in 1997. Subsequently, Wayang II was exhibited at Artfolio Gallery in Singapore in 1998. Yusof Ghani received his B.A. (Graphic Art) from George Mason University in Virginia, USA (1981) and a Master of Fine Art (Painting) at the Catholic University, Washington USA (1983). He unveiled his Tari series in 1983 in an exhibition at his university before following it up at Galeri Citra in Kuala Lumpur in 1989.

Yusof Ghani's Tari series were first exhibited in 1989 at Galeri Citra and is one of the artist's most popular series to date. Depicted in an earthy palette, the artwork consists of human figures depicted in several dance postures and features a distinctive presentation of gestural movement and figure ground relationship. Yusof Ghani worked in art-related jobs such as artist-illustrator at the Agriculture Ministry (1967), instructor at the Fisheries Institute, Penang (1971) and a graphic artist at Radio-Television Malaysia (1977) before pursuing his art education in the United States. Upon his return, he was Associate Professor at the Mara Institute of Technology. He graduated with a Masters in Fine Art at the Catholic University, Washington (1983), after obtaining his Bachelor's (Graphic Art) at the George Mason University, Virginia (1981). All his major works were produced after his American exposures: Tari, Topeng, Wayang, Hijau, Segerak, Biring, Wajah, Ombak and Kuda. In 1985, he won the Minor Award in the PNB art competition in Kuala Lumpur. Yusof Ghani made his London debut in an exhibition titled Segerak VI - Transcendent Figures at the Asia House in April 2017. Verging on fully abstract, silhouettes of physical forms - all seemingly in a ceaseless movement - are discernible in this work on paper from Yusof Ghani's sought after Tari series. The tugs-and-pull of figures in rhythmic surge and antithetical clashes comes in a subdued palette of luscious greens, with strokes of yellow accentuating the forms of the moving figures. Yusof Ghani was awarded a scholarship to study at George Mason University, USA. He graduated with a BFA (Graphic Art) in 1981 and pursued his MFA (Fine Art) at Catholic University in Washington in 1983. Before his American studies, he had worked as an artist-illustrator (Agriculture Ministry, 1967), an instructor (Fisheries Institute, Penang, 1971) and a graphic artist (RTM, 1977). On his return, he lectured at the Universiti MARA Institute of Technology.

This magnetic composition thrives on the energy of strong movements and the element of change. The artist conveys excitement through this vibrant display of kinetic life movement with great slithers of yellow masses with coloured streaks. Painted with robust brushstrokes, the work exemplifies the artist's continuous exploration of natural forms. His series, in chronological order, are Tari, Topeng, Wayang, Hijau, Segerak, Biring, Wajah, Ombak and Kuda. Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers with partners Galeri Prima and Pinkguy Gallery organised Segerak VIII: Utopia, the final edition of Segerak series, in August 2019. In Henry Butcher Art Auction December 2021, his Siri Tari - Zakwan (1987) was sold for a record price of RM 403,200.
