Born in the Italian town of Comunanza, in the current region of the Marche, he was son of the painter Giuseppe Ghezzi by whom he was instructed together with the future painter Antonio Amorosi. Later Pier Leone rubbed shoulders with the best Roman artistic circles and began to work in various painting-related professions. Member of the Academy of St. Luke, he was protected by Pope Clement XI and appointed official painter of the Apostolic Chamber in 1706, where he painted official portraits, among other commissions. He was son-in-law of the painter Carlo Maratta. Pier Leone Ghezzi painted the frescoes of the Villa Falconieri in Frascati and several religious canvases for various churches in Rome, but he is remembered above all for his caricatures, drawings inspired by various characters of the society and the panorama of the time (prelates, artists, nobles, foreign tourists, etc.), in which he skillfully exaggerates the postures and physical features of the character. The piece we are dealing with is the portrait of a courtesan represented in the classical style, half profile, looking directly at the viewer and wearing clothes and jewelry that determine her social position. The woman is represented on a neutral background.

Unbeschrieben. -- -- Der Maler und Graphiker Pier Leone Ghezzi gilt in der Geschichte der Karikatur gemeinhin als erster Berufskarikaturist. Seit 1705 Mitglied der Accademia di S. Luca und sowohl als Maler wie auch als Buchillustrator erfolgreich, treten diese Arbeiten doch kunstgeschichtlich neben dem umfangreichen zeichnerischen Werk der Portraitkarikaturen zurück. Um die dreitausend dieser Blätter schuf Ghezzi. Unzählige Mitglieder der römischen Gesellschaft und Reisende ließen sich in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts von ihm zeichnen. Ghezzis schwungvolle, humoristische Karikaturen waren äußerst beliebt, wurden durch druckgraphische Reproduktionen - vor allem von Matthias Oesterreich - verbreitet und beeinflussten die englischen Karikaturisten der zweiten Jahrhunderthälfte maßgeblich. Die beiden vorliegenden Singeries mit dem skurrilen Benehmen von zwei Affenpaaren sind von größter Seltenheit und in der beschreibenden Literatur nicht verzeichnet. Die kleinformatigen Radierungen sind in der Platte bezeichnet: "P. L. Ghezzius inv. et sculp." bzw. "Petrus Leo Ghezzius inv. et del.". Ganz ausgezeichnete Drucke, bis auf die Plattenkante beschnitten. I primi esemplari noti risalgono al 1693 e 1694, ma è molto probabile che ve ne siano anche di precedenti. Leone Pascoli, suo biografo, racconta che il pittore: 'dilettasi ancora di far ritratti caricati, e veduto che ha una volta sola il soggetto ne forma sì forte, e viva impressione, che nulla più gli bisogna per farli simili' (p. 655), questo repertorio ammonta a migliaia di esemplari, conservati oggi in collezioni pubbliche e private. È impossibile quantificarne il numero poiché nuovi fogli affiorano costantemente sul mercato antiquario, in parte provenienti da tre volumi oggi smembrati, che appartennero a Carlo di Borbone re di Napoli e Sicilia, poi re di Spagna, e che furono di proprietà dei duchi di Wellington fino al 1971. While he painted many works for Pope Clement XI, who was to be one of his most loyal patrons, Ghezzi is best known for his pen and ink caricatures of various members of Roman society to which he dedicated himself later in his career. Ghezzi's gently satirical portraits offer an engaging impression of eighteenth-century Roman life, recording the activities of the common people as well as those in the upper strata of society, from high-ranking churchmen and aristocrats to the craftsmen, artists, musicians, and laborers who served them, as well as visitors to Rome including British Grand Tourists. While the practice of making caricature drawings is one that Ghezzi may not be said to have invented, he was certainly the first artist to establish a reputation in this field, so much so that he was known as 'il famoso cavaliere di caricature'. His earliest humourous drawings date from around 1700, and he continued to produce these works for the remainder of his career, selling them to collectors all over Europe.Some three thousand examples have survived, many of these caricature drawings were bound into albums, of which the most significant group is a series of eight volumes - entitled by the artist 'Il Mondo Nuovo' and divided into different categories by subject or profession - in the collection of the Vatican Library. Other albums of caricature drawings by Ghezzi are today in the British Museum, the Morgan Libary, the Kupferstichkabinetts of Berlin and Dresden, the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica in Rome, and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.Nineteen of the sheets in the present collection come from a group of 152 caricatures gathered in Rome and bound in the 18th Century as two albums, with each sheet annotated in French with details of the sitter. These albums were bought in Paris in 1763 by Richard Neville Neville (1717-1793), who as Secretary of the British Embassy was charged with negotiating the treaty with France that ended the Seven Years War. A note in Neville's hand on the flyleaf of each album records that they were bought on 7 April 1763 for 10 gns and 5 gns respectively. On Neville's death the albums passed to his son the second Baron Braybrooke, and remained in the family until they were sold at Sotheby's, London, 10 December 1979. The opening sheet of the Braybrooke album shows figures in the salone of Cardinal Melchior de Polignac (1661-1741), a gifted politician and scholar who was French ambassador in Rome from 1724 to 1730. It appears that Ghezzi met the majority of the characters featured in these albums at the Cardinal's house, which may help to explain the preponderance of Frenchmen and clerics. Antonella Pampalone, in her introduction to the 1979 sale catalogue, dates the group to the 1720's.
