This Mercury is an ancient replica of one of the most famous sculptures made by Giambologna in Florence. The monumental work is currently housed in the Bargello National Museum in Florence. The sketch is housed in the Medieval Museum in Bologna. This is one of the Flemish artist's most replicated sculptures and attention is diverted by the quantity of copies present on the market. Ours, on the other hand, denotes a superior quality and an extraordinary stylistic closeness to the best ancient productions of the Giambologna school. A distinctive feature, for example, is the treatment of the nails, typically squared, or the facial expression and the rendering of the locks escaping the helmet's grip. Even the entire physicality of the sculpture refers to the description of a miniature man, with all the anatomical details defined in a naturalistic and emphasized way, from the sex to the buttocks to the chest. In the best Giambologna school. For these reasons it is assumed that the bronze was made at least in the 18th century, in full Grand Tour style, if not earlier. Charles Avery per le indicazioni verbali fornite dopo aver visionato il bronzetto dal vivo.Il bronzetto viene presentato con esami della lega, realizzati presso i laboratori dell' Università di fisica di Milano, radiografie, e certificato di libera esportazione.Questo bel cavallino "andante" rientra nella produzione della stretta cerchia del Giambologna, scultore fiammingo naturalizzato a Firenze.Famosissimi i bronzi usciti dalla sua fonderia e da quelle dei suoi allievi - continuatori. Sia Antonio Susini che Pietro Tacca, eredi della fonderia e dei modelli del maestro, replicarono dopo la sua morte le invenzioni del Giambologna, spesso uguagliandolo e superando nel cesello; questo è il caso del susini che, nascendo orafo, rifiniva i bronzetti in modo straordinario (ed è questa la sua cifra stilistica) distinguendosi dalle opere del maestro spesso più di "getto" e "cerose".Il nostro modello, con la criniera corta da modelli archeologici, somiglia molto a quello custodito al Victoria and Albert Museum, Londra, lì attribuito al Susini.La straordinaria lacca trasparente dai toni rossastri, tipica delle migliori produzioni fiorentine, impreziosisce l' opera è fornisce preziose informazioni.La relativa, e limitata, rifinitura dei particolari lo arricchiscono di un ulteriore fascino.La potenza e dignità del piccolo quadrupede al passo esplodono nella definizione dell'anatomia e nel lucore del mantello.Inoltre, il dott. Charles Avery ci faceva generosamente notare che il nostro esemplare presenta la tipica base ovale delle fusioni realizzate dalla fonderia del Giambologna, lui vivente.Impossibile addentrarsi oltre nella descrizione di questa, potenzialmente, importante fusione. This exquisite bronze replicates Giambologna's famous model housed in the Bargello National Museum in Florence. Some historians (kneuter) believe this type of composition is based on models made by the artist during his time in Rome, in wax or terracotta, then cast in bronze in Florence. The bronze statuette has ancient characteristics and suggests a 17th-18th century derivation but, as with all derivations from Giambologna models, dogmatism must be excluded. To be studied. Woman Bathing. Giambologna (Douai, 1529-Florence, 1608) from a model. 17th-18th century. Patinated bronze, worn.

For this small bronze, we must refer to the original model made by Giambologna, now housed in the Bargello National Museum in Florence. Critics unanimously consider this and two other bronzes, the Apollino and the Crouching Venus, also in the Bargello collection, to be "studies" created by the master around the mid-16th century and then cast in bronze. All three retain a beautiful sketchy appearance, with little cold finishing. It's thought they were ideas jotted down for later use in more important compositions. They were certainly replicated in the workshop and later in the foundries that inherited the master's models. Other foundries undoubtedly also replicated these bronzes to have them available for their model collections. While it's impossible to delve into the myriad of attributions surrounding Giambologna's models, our Venus can be prudently dated to the 17th-18th century, reflecting the artistic taste mentioned above. The high quality of the casting and the beautiful worn patina place it, in my opinion, among the ancient versions of the subject. The invention of this bronze derives from one of the early works of the great Flemish artist Giambologna, sculptor at the court of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Francesco I de Medici (Florence 1541-1587). The original bronze, signed by the master, is kept at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and is similar in size to ours. This delightful invention enjoyed great success over the centuries and there remain extraordinary versions created by Antonio Susini and smaller versions that have populated the studios of countless collectors. Our version features the variant of the cloth draping from Venus's breast towards her knee, which is absent in the Vienna version. Full casting, little cold-worked and very material, roughened, could suggest an ancient test before the final casting, but everything remains to be proven. The material aspect of the object certainly makes us think it is ancient, between the 17th and 18th centuries.

The sculptural group The Rape of the Sabine Women was created after the celebrated model by the Florentine master Giovanni da Bologna, one of the leading figures of Late Mannerism and early Baroque. The composition refers to one of the most dramatic episodes of Roman legendary history, associated with the founding of Rome and the beginning of the so-called Sabine War.The multi-figure group is conceived according to the principle of figura serpentinata, characteristic of Giambologna’s sculptural language. The viewer’s eye moves upward in a spiraling motion: from the defeated, pleading figure at the base to the central male protagonist asserting possession, and further to the ascending female figure, whose gesture intensifies the dramatic tension. The contrast of poses, the opposition of gestures, and the complex spatial arrangement create a powerful sense of continuous movement and inner conflict.The modeling of the nude bodies recalls classical antiquity, while the expressive poses and dynamic composition reflect the aesthetics of Mannerism. (1529 Douai - 1608 Florenz) nach Raub einer Sabinerin Serpentin. Detailreich ausgeführte, vollplastische, subtil polierte Skulptur, als Grand Tour-Objekt im 19. Jh. in Italien, wohl in Florenz ausgeführt. Nach dem berühmten 1582/83 vollendeten Meisterwerk Giambolognas. Dessen kunstvoll verschlungene, komplexe, auf Mehransichtigkeit angelegte Komposition aus drei unterschiedlichen Aktfiguren gilt als eine der vollkommensten Verkörperungen manieristischer Plastik. Die in der Loggia dei Lanzi in Florenz aufgestellte Marmorskulptur inspirierte viele Bildhauer der nachfolgenden Generationen vom Ende des 16. Jhs. bis weit in das 19. After "GIAMBOLOGNA", JEAN DE BOLOGNE (Douai, Flanders, 1529 - Florence, 1608). Italy, 19th century. "Mercury." Sculpture in patinated bronze. Marble pedestal. It has lost part of the caduceus. Measurements: 84 cm (total height with pedestal). The work, from the neoclassical period, follows the model of the original sculpture of the Renaissance artist Jean de Bologne, better known by the Italianized form of his name, "Giambologna", now preserved in the Bargello Museum in Florence. The present version also has a frieze on the pedestal that did not exist in the Flemish sculpture. The original piece, originally made in 1567, presents the classical divinity Mercury (Roman version of the Greek Hermes), the messenger of the gods. The artist has sought to translate the lightness and speed of the character through a posture of great audacity. The god defies the laws of gravity by leaning only on the tips of the toes of his left foot, which barely touches the base of the sculpture, which consists of a male head exhaling a breath of air. This is the personification of the south wind, a figure also deified in classical mythology and Mercury's ally in the propagation of news, good and bad. Despite this reduced base, the artist managed to create a very balanced piece, where the gestures of the arms and legs are perfectly balanced to allow the bronze to support itself without the need for added elements. Thus, the right arm rises towards the sky in an expressive gesture, while the left arm moves back and balances it, holding the herald's emblematic rod. With this work, brimming with movement, grace and delicacy, where the artist also works admirably with the nude, some of the most outstanding contributions of the classical Italian Renaissance are summarized: the recovery of Antiquity, both in themes and forms, the monumental free-standing sculpture or the nude, male and female. On the other hand, the search for movement, dynamism, even the instability of the figure, prelude some aspects of Mannerism and the Baroque trends of the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
