Giacinto Gigante (1806 Naples - 1876 ibid.): View of the sea from the hill of the Grotta di Seiano (Posillipo), 1827, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: lower left signed in the printing plate: "Gigante". Inscribed by another person: "Fuori Grotta". lower left dated: "1827". Date: 1827 Description: The Gulf of Naples with its azure waters and volcanic rocky landscape has long attracted artists and pleasure travellers to its shores. In addition to Naples and Sorrento, in the 1930s it was above all the small coastal town of Posillipo that Romantic artists headed for. To the west and east, the slopes there offer overwhelming views of Naples, Vesuvius and the islands and peninsulas near the coast. Depending on the location, even a forest landscape and the architecture of a small settlement could come into view, as in the present prospectus, while the sweeping bay of the famous gulf remains visible on the horizon. A group of landscape artists around Anton Smick van Pitloo (1790-1837), whose pupil was Giacinto Gigante, settled in Posillipo and founded the so-called "School of Posillipo". Characteristic for the paintings of this group was the detailed and realistic rendering of the landscape in the region of the Gulf. Heroic exaggerations are not to be found in the vedute of the "School of Posillipo", but instead port views with fishermen and country people going about their daily lives. In view of our etching, which, apart from the prominent monastic friar in the foreground, is sparse in people but rich in scenic detail, it is hardly surprising that Gigante also worked as a topographer during his training. The precise understanding of topographical conditions, the location and course of coasts and roads, as well as the accurate depiction of towns and landscape markers, were important foundations for the artist's work, whose vedute turned more and more towards the picturesque and romantic as his years progressed. He completed his artistic training in the Neapolitan studio of the Dutch painter Antoon Sminck Pitloo, who encouraged his students to paint 'all’aperto', or out of doors. Gigante exhibited for the first time in 1826, showing four watercolours at the annual exhibition at the Museo Borbonico. He contributed illustrations for the books Viaggio pittorico nel regno delle due Sicilie, published between 1829 and 1832, and the Esquisses pittoresques et descriptives de la ville et environs de Naples published in 1832.

GIACINTO GIGANTE (ITALIAN 1806–1876) GIACINTO GIGANTE (ITALIAN 1806–1876) View of the coast from Posillipo signed G Gigante (lower right) oil on canvas 40 x 63 cm Giacinto Gigante is probably the most renowned artist of the Scuola di Posillipo (School of Posillipo), It was the Neapolitan landscape which was to provide Gigante with the major inspiration for his work, in particular the fishing village of Sorrento, the jewel of the Amalfi Coast, which represents an important stage in the artist's development. Gigante has captured the view from his beloved Posillopo. This tranquil scene with the evening light bathing the figures and illuminating the buildings, revealing day to day life in the Neapolitan landscape. The style and overall type of the painting point to its likely execution during the 1840s. The work can be compared closely on stylistic and compositional grounds to treatments of the subject showing a comparable treatment of light and a similar characterisation of the figures during this period.
