After beginning his artistic training when he was only nine years old, Ignacio Gil Sala entered the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where his teachers were Félix Mestres and Vicente Borrás. In 1930, while still almost an apprentice, he was awarded the School's bronze medal, and in 1936 he won a scholarship for a study trip to Spain. Throughout his life Gil Sala traveled throughout the Peninsula as well as to different Islamic and Latin American countries. He exhibited his work in Spain, France, the Philippines, Switzerland, the United States, Canada and Colombia, among many other countries, with special mention of his solo exhibitions held in the galleries Costa (Palma de Mallorca, 1940), Augusta (Barcelona, exhibiting periodically since 1940), Lars Laine (Palm Springs, 1952), Toisón (Madrid, 1956), Cano (Madrid, exhibiting biannually since 1958) and Cézanne (Cannes, 1956 and 1966). From 1997 until his death, he showed his work regularly in the galleries of the Grup d'Art Escolà, which dedicated several tribute exhibitions to him after his death. The artistic and human recognitions have been constant, although not as many as he deserved, and as an example we will mention the street dedicated to him by the town of Castelldefels, where he lived, or the fact that the Insular Council of the Balearic Islands gave him an award for the numerous times he immortalized the lands, the people and the sea of Ibiza. An extraordinary draughtsman, agile with pencil and charcoal, Gil Sala immortalized landscapes from all over Spain, Mediterranean fishing ports, different European cities, etc., all captured through a resounding brushstroke and a studied coloring. His awards include the Silver Medal of the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona (1930), the First Medal at the International Exhibition of Palma de Mallorca (1941), the prize at the National Exhibition of Barcelona (1944), and two first prizes and an extraordinary first prize at the Painters of Africa Exhibition (1955, 1960 and 1961). Likewise, after his death several tributes were dedicated to him, among them the exhibitions held in the galleries Terra Ferma in Lleida in 2004 and Salduba in Zaragoza in 2007, both belonging to the Escolà Group.

Ignacio Gil cultivated mainly the costumbrista scenes, inspired in places like Barcelona, Majorca or Ibiza, as we observe in this composition of rural subject. The work is resolved by means of a loose and impastoed brushstroke, with a luminous and contrasted palette that accentuates the effects of light and atmosphere. The synthetic treatment of the figures and the landscape reflects a modern interpretation of Spanish regionalist painting, centered on daily life and popular traditions. Ignacio Gil Sala was a Spanish painter trained at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. Throughout his career he exhibited in Spain and in several European and American countries. His painting was characterized by a loose brushstroke and a luminous coloring. His works are preserved in museums in Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Valencia and Rome.

Ignacio Gil Sala began painting at a very early age, when he was only nine years old, when he began his training at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, under the guidance of Felix Mestres and Vicente Borras. In 1930 he was awarded the Bronze Medal of the aforementioned school, and in 1936 he won one of its scholarships. Throughout his long career he exhibited both in Spain and abroad, in France, the Philippines, Switzerland, the United States, Canada, Colombia and other countries. He usually dedicated himself to landscapes and subjects of a costumbrist or exotic tone, portraying, for example, corners of Barcelona or Mallorca, the popular life in small Ibizan villages, the atmosphere of the Arab souks or the peculiar charm of the villages of the Andes, which he got to know in his numerous travels. His brushstrokes are spontaneous and undone, with sketched lines and bright colors. This can be seen in this canvas where the painter portrays a street in a small Ibizan village. The artist reproduces the intense luminosity of the Mediterranean island through the blue sky and the dazzling white walls of the houses. A woman holding a girl by the hand and a cart pulled by a donkey enliven the scene. Ignacio Gil Sala decorated, in 1955, the cathedral and the main altar of the Seminary of Ibiza, in the first case with twelve large paintings, and has works exhibited in museums in Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Valencia and Rome.

After starting his artistic training at the age of nine, Gil Sala entered the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he had as teachers Felix Mestres and Vicente Borras. Already in 1930, being still almost an apprentice, he obtained the bronze medal of the School, and in 1936 he won by contest a scholarship to make a study trip through Spain. Those were the difficult moments of the outbreak of the Civil War and thanks to the help of the sculptor Mariano Benlliure, he was able to complete his artistic training. Throughout his life Ignacio Gil dedicated himself to travel both in the Peninsula and in different Islamic and Latin American countries. He exhibited his work in Spain, France, the Philippines, Switzerland, the United States, Canada and Colombia, among many other countries. Extraordinary draftsman, agile handling pencil and charcoal, Ignacio Gil immortalized landscapes of all Spain, fishing ports of the Mediterranean, different European cities, etc., all expressed through a resounding brushstroke and a studied color. IGNACIO GIL SALA (Barcelona, 1913 - 2003). "Andean market". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower margin. Measurements: 46 x 55 cm; 64 x 70 cm (frame). After beginning his artistic training when he was only nine years old, Ignacio Gil Sala entered the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where his teachers were Félix Mestres and Vicente Borrás. In 1930, while still almost an apprentice, he was awarded the School's bronze medal, and in 1936 he won a scholarship for a study trip to Spain. Throughout his life Gil Sala traveled throughout the Peninsula as well as to different Islamic and Latin American countries. He exhibited his work in Spain, France, the Philippines, Switzerland, the United States, Canada and Colombia, among many other countries, with special mention of his solo exhibitions held in the galleries Costa (Palma de Mallorca, 1940), Augusta (Barcelona, exhibiting periodically since 1940), Lars Laine (Palm Springs, 1952), Toisón (Madrid, 1956), Cano (Madrid, exhibiting biannually since 1958) and Cézanne (Cannes, 1956 and 1966). From 1997 until his death, he showed his work regularly in the galleries of the Grup d'Art Escolà, which dedicated several tribute exhibitions to him after his death. The artistic and human recognitions have been constant, although not as many as he deserved, and as an example we will mention the street dedicated to him by the town of Castelldefels, where he lived, or the fact that the Insular Council of the Balearic Islands gave him an award for the numerous times he immortalized the lands, the people and the sea of Ibiza. An extraordinary draughtsman, agile with pencil and charcoal, Gil Sala immortalized landscapes from all over Spain, Mediterranean fishing ports, different European cities, etc., all captured through a resounding brushstroke and a studied coloring. His awards include the Silver Medal of the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona (1930), the First Medal at the International Exhibition of Palma de Mallorca (1941), the prize at the National Exhibition of Barcelona (1944), and two first prizes and an extraordinary first prize at the Painters of Africa Exhibition (1955, 1960 and 1961). Likewise, after his death several tributes were dedicated to him, among them the exhibitions held in the galleries Terra Ferma in Lleida in 2004 and Salduba in Zaragoza in 2007, both belonging to the Escolà Group.
