FRÜCHTESTILLLEBEN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 45 x 38 cm. Der für dieses Gemälde in Anspruch genommene Maler hat nicht selten seine Früchtearrangements als Gebinde gezeigt, d. h. ohne erkennbare Platzierung in den Bildraum gestellt; fast immer jedoch vor dunklem bis schwarzem Hintergrund. Bemerkenswert ist die Lichtkomposition in seinen Früchtebildern: die helleren Früchte – hier die Trauben zusammen mit einer weißen Kamelienblüte – treten optisch vor, womit eine Tiefenwirkung für die umgebenden und dahinter platzierten Früchte entsteht. So erscheint das Gebinde wie frei im dunklen Raum schwebend (vgl. zwei Früchtestilleben angeboten bei Lempertz, Auktion 987, 19. November 2011, Lot 1284). Im Detail beweist das Gemälde höchste Meisterschaft, erkennbar etwa in der Darstellung der aufgesprungenen Feige links, oder in der unterschiedlichen Materialwiedergabe der beiden Blüten Kamelie und Rose, abgesehen von der Feinmalerei der auf den Trauben lupengenau gezeigten kleinen Insekten. A.R. Der Maler war der Vater des gleichnamigen Jan Pauwel Gillemans d. J. (1651–1704), den er auch in Antwerpen ausgebildet hat. In seinem Werk ist der Einfluss der Niederländer zu bemerken, wie etwa von Jan Davidsz de Heem (1606–1683/84). Seine prächtigen Stillleben waren Ausdruck des barocken Ideals der Fülle und des Luxus eines Goldenen Zeitalters der Malerei. Gillemans d. Ä. wirkte ausschließlich in seiner Heimatstadt, wo er 1647 als Meister der Gilde genannt wird und eine Werkstatt unterhielt. (1481631) (1) (11)

FRÜCHTESTILLLEBEN MIT ZINNTELLER, CHINASCHALE UND GARNELEN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 79 x 64 cm. Links unten signiert. Die Komposition zeigt einen höchst dekorativen Aufbau mit mannigfachen Gegenständen auf massiver Steinplatte vor einer Nische. Zwischen dunkler gehaltenen Partien leuchten einige der Früchte hervor, wie etwa der geöffnete Pfirsich, der zusammen mit kleinen Garnelen auf dem Zinnteller liegt, oder das leuchtende Gelb der Zitrone rechts oben in der Tazza. Farbkompositionell ist das Rot der Kirschen mit dem des hohen Glases in Beziehung gesetzt. Als Besonderheit, im Licht zurückhaltend, aber doch dominierend, die wertvolle chinesische blau bemalte Schale, die einen Kranich zeigt, der wohl nicht zufällig mit den Garnelen in Beziehung gebracht worden ist. Die Trauben und Blätter dagegen verbinden sich farblich mit dem dunklen Hintergrund. Der Maler war der Vater des gleichnamigen Jan Pauwel Gillemans d. J. (1651 – 1704), den er auch in Antwerpen ausgebildet hat. In seinem Werk ist der Einfluss der Niederländer zu bemerken, wie etwa von Jan Davidsz de Heem (1606 – 1683/84). Óleo sobre lienzo Jan Pauwel Gillemans el Viejo (Amberes, 1618-1675) fue un pintor flamenco especializado en bodegones, en particular de frutas y flores, influenciado por Jan Davidsz. de Heem. Se formó como platero, pero se dedicó a la pintura de bodegones, alcanzando una exitosa carrera. Su obra incluye bodegones de frutas, flores y vanitas, tanto de gran tamaño como de pequeño formato, estas últimas muy apreciadas por los coleccionistas como piezas de gabinete. Catalogue Notes JEAN-PAUL GILLEMANS I (1618 - 1675) Flemish painter, contemporary of Brueghel de Velours and Daniel Seghers, whose influence he was under. He became a Master in Antwerp in 1647 - 1648. A painter of flowers and fruits, he specialized mainly in fruit painting. His most frequent subjects, within the group of signed paintings, are Breakfasts or Fruit Garlands in landscapes, suspended from a baroque fountain or decorating a cartouche. It is a charming piece, painted with the meticulousness of a miniaturist but possessing the beauty and the charm of a work of art. In the ensemble of this painter’s works, it remains curious despite its somewhat dark tone, which is intentional and gives depth to the landscape on the left. This effect enhances all the paintings from the late 17th century, producing a remarkable antiquated effect. There are three Gillemans: the father and two sons. This painting is by the father.

The records of the famous Antwerp art dealer Guilliam Forchoudt (1608-1678), from 1665 to 1673, tell us that Gillemans regularly supplied him with still lifes and garlands of fruit for export.
