James Gillray Sold at Auction Prices

Caricaturist, Etcher, Engraver, Illustrator, Wood cutter, b. 1756 - d. 1815

James Gillray (13 August 1756 or 1757 – 1 June 1815) was a British caricaturist and printmaker famous for his etched political and social satires, mainly published between 1792 and 1810. Many of his works are held at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Gillray has been called "the father of the political cartoon", with his works satirizing George III, prime ministers and generals. Regarded as being one of the two most influential cartoonists, the other being William Hogarth, Gillray's wit and humour, knowledge of life, fertility of resource, keen sense of the ludicrous, and beauty of execution, at once gave him the first place among caricaturists.

Gillray (James). Exaltation of Faro's Daughters, London: H. Humphreys, May 12th, 1796 * Gillray (James). Exaltation of Faro's Daughters, London: H. Humphreys, May 12th, 1796, etching on wove with contemporary hand colouring, narrow margins to left and right, slight oxidization with show-through on verso, 360 x 260 mm QTY: (1) NOTE: BM Satires 8876. The Countess of Buckinghamshire (left) and Lady Sarah Archer (right) were fashionable, high-society women notorious for holding illegal gambling parties. Although no effort was made by officials to prosecute the ladies, their activities were widely reported in newspapers of the day, leading to the creation of this print which made quite an impression; [The] hint of placing Ladies in the pillory, who should be found guilty of violating the laws by gaming, has found its way into the Print shops, to the no small mortification and disgrace of certain Women of fashion. They have, however, taken every possible precaution against conviction by placing double sentinels at their doors, to see that no vile informer gains admittance. (London Times, May 13, 1796, p. 2.)

Both Fox and Grey look into a large pier-glass on the extreme left, whose frame is surmounted by the Royal Arms and Prince's feathers, indicating Carlton House and the Prince's 'ostentatious patronage' of the new Ministry.' G. design et fecit' (within the plate, lower left), numbered '85' (within the plate, upper right), 35.8 x 26.7 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The Metropolitan Museum entry for the present print describes how 'Gillray’s famously brutal caricature of George, Prince of Wales encapsulates the effects of uncontrolled self-indulgence upon the heir to the British throne. Sprawled in his chair after a lavish meal, the prince picks his teeth with a meat fork; his lack of gentility is underscored by the over-flowing chamber pot at his elbow used to anchor unpaid bills. Just thirty years old, his accumulated ailments can be inferred from remedies piled at right – pills and potions to treat "stinking breath", "piles" (hemorrhoids), venereal disease and poor digestion. A portrait on the wall suggests a more effective remedy – depicting Luigi Carnarro, a Venetian nobleman whose life was famously saved by going on a strict diet. By including "Voluptuary" in the title, Gillray invoked contemporary worries that traditional British masculine virtues were being enervated by a culture obsessed with luxury.'

Behind the King's back, and on the extreme right, is a fire-place; in the grate is a vase containing snowdrops, holly, and mistletoe, to show that although it is winter there is no fire'.

The House of Commons London James Gillray, March 1st 1798. 31.5cm x 36cm. Etching printed in sanguine. A satirical depiction of the House of Commons if the planned French invasion was successful, a caption in the image reads "This house adjourned to Botany Bay" with the members of the House garbed as convicts, shackled for their journey. The first in a series of four plates engraved by Gillray after descriptions written by Sir John Dalrymple which illustrate the impact Napoleon's invasion would have on English society. The plate was restruck in a more commonly found edition by Bohn in the 1850s, this is the original 1798 impression. Laid on paper, edge trimmed. A few old creases and discolouration. Some small scorch marks with minor loss to the bottom edge.
