Charles Ginner ARA CBE,  British 1878-1952 -  Cliff-edge scene with stone

    Est: £12,000 - £18,000

Charles Ginner ARA CBE,  British 1878-1952 -  Cliff-edge scene with stone walls, c.1930s;  oil on canvas, signed lower right 'C. Ginner', 45.8 x 61 cm  Provenance:  Mark Glazebrook (1936-2009), Director of the Whitechapel Gallery, London (1969-71) and founder of Albemarle Gallery, London (1986-1994);  private collection, gifted from the above  Note:  with thanks to Dr. Wendy Barron for her assistance in the cataloguing of this lot.  There is a partial label attached to the reverse of the stretcher with the artist's address '61 High Str Hampstead' visible.  During the 1930s, when this work was most likely made, Ginner lived in Hampstead, working primarily in watercolour and painting urban landsapes, marking this a particularly interesting rural scene. Ginner worked in a precise style, drawing out the geometry of a place to create complex images, seen here in the emphasis on the stone structure and traditional architecture of this beguiling landscape. Although an exact location has not been identified for the work, Ginner travelled across Britain and France making works during this period. Using a cool palette of greys and greens, the work has a wonderful still atmosphere and sense of timelessness.  Ginner was a founding member of the Camden Town Group in 1911, alongside his friends Harold Gilman and Spencer Gore, and the London Group in 1913. His works are in all major UK collections, including the Tate, the Yale Centre for British Art and the Arts Council Collection.
