Artist: CHARLES-FELIX GIR (1883-1941) Size: 17 3/4 x 23 1/2 in./45 x 59.7 cm Charles-Felix Gir had a charmed life. He was married to Jeanne Fusier-Gir, a well-known actress, and they attended the Paris Opera every night for 17 years where she performed. Fortunately, Gir was an accomplished painter, watercolorist, sculptor and illustrator and created sketches and caricatures of actors and dancers in the performances, which he'd then sell to newspapers that had commissioned him. Presumably, this is one of those sketches worked into an original signed oil painting, which delights in movement and its gravity: all motion in the piece descends to the point of the ballerina's toe-shoe, upon which the entire composition is balanced. Gir may best be remembered by a poster designed by his friend Paul Colin, promoting an exhibition of Gir''s art works. previously unrecorded - rare.

The idea of a large primate abducting a young woman had been implanted into the Parisian consciousness in 1887, when sculptor Emmanuel Fremiet won the medal of honor at the Paris Salon for his statue depicting a gorilla carrying off a woman. That the idea became titillating enough to make it to the stage of one of Paris' most prominent music halls speaks to the innate sense of the exotic excitement, forbidden pleasures and inherent taboo represented by the fantasy. In addition, 1925 was also the year in which a young Josephine Baker made her debut in Paris. Her signature performance, the danse sauvage, was a reverse anthropomorphisation of this very act. Contrary to certain beliefs, this poster was not a result of the influence of King Kong on the Parisian Music Hall scene, as it actually predates the release of the movie by 8 years.

Provenance: Brooklyn Institute of Arts and SciencesThe primary positive aspect of Arlecchino was his physical agility, a very nimble and agile, an entertaining trait that certainly helped him to become the most popular of the zanni, or comic servant characters, in commedia dell'arte. While generally depicted as stupid and gluttonous, Gir's gleefully-patched harlequin has himself under control in this pas de deux from a "ballet-arlequinade," paired, naturally, with his primary love interest, the coy Columbina. On a historical note, it should be noted that this painting was donated in 1925 to the Brooklyn Museum by Frank Lusk Babbott (1854-1933), a multimillionaire jute merchant, art collector and patron. He was a trustee of various organizations, including the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, and served as vice-president of the New York Board of Education from 1902 to 1904.
