Mid 19th Century; Original, Frame 21” by 24”. Art 12.5” by 15.5”. Oil on board. Beautifully done European street scene of seller’s market with fruit seller conversing with young family. Beautiful provincial thatched houses in background and detailed stone road in foreground. Artist signed lower left. Displayed in a period heavily carved gold gilt mirror. Brass artist tag on bottom center identifying artist as Ch. Giraud. Original paper label on reverse. Stamp from Parisian frame maker on the artist board identified this as being bought from Morisat Paris. Frame has been reinforced with metal brackets, otherwise appears all original with no repairs or inpainting. Unaltered and excellent condition. Provenance: Porcelli Estate Collection

Since the 1850s, he painted views of Tahiti, where he went in 1842 at the request of the British Consul. Later he painted with preference interiors, landscapes and genre scenes from Brittany.

Frame abrasions visible predominately along upper, lower, and right edges. Two areas of surface abrasion with associated inpainting visible under UV light to upper right corner and center of upper edge. Additional small area of inpainting to center of lower edge. Work presents well. Framed without glazing measuring 24 x 36 inches.

The painting delights with its fresh colors and its Mediterranean atmosphere The present painting is the work of the French painter and draftsman Sébastien Charles Giraud. It was probably on a trip to Italy that Giraud executed the painting. It depicts a young beauty sitting in profile on the terrace of a country house. The clothes and the delicate jewelry of the sitter were carried out with fine brush strokes and bright colors. The architectural background and the fine landscape form a discreet setting with subtle light and shadow effects that perfectly harmonize with the sitter in the foreground. The painting is signed lower right, 'Ch Giraud'. It is well presented, and the panel is well preserved. Under UV it is still possible to see a discontinuous band of restoration to the edges, scattered touches of strengthening and retouching to the panel. The gilt stucco frame shows minor wear. The overall dimensions, framed, are 53 x 43.5 cm. The panel measures 32.5 x 24 cm.
