Mekertich Givanian was born in Istanbul and studied at the Istanbul Academy of Arts under the tutorship of the French artist Pierre Guillemet. In 1874, Givanian met Ivan Aivazovsky, whose work he greatly admired. In Givanian's works, one can see many of Aivazovsky's influences, but with a style specifically his own.

No apparent issues visible to the naked eye. With no significant issues to report. Flaking resulting in losses to the left edge, most notably to the tree and tree trunk. Overall craquelure visible to the naked eye. All consistent with age. Inspection under UV shows scattered retouching to the center of the sky, less than 5% and a even layer of masking varnish. framed dimensions: 74 x 93 cm (29 1/8 x 36 5/8 in.) N.B.
