Painted before 1975 The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by the El Glaoui family. A certificate can be issued at the purchaser's expense. Provenance Private Franco-Spanish collection; gift from the artist on the occasion of the current owner's wedding, 1975. "Fantasia is not a show: it's a galloping memory, a song of dust and fire." Ahmed Sefrioui, in Le Maroc des peintres, Casablanca, 1987. Born into a large family of Berber warriors from the Atlas Mountains, Hassan El Glaoui was the eldest son of the last pasha of Morocco, Thami, and of Lalla Zineb El Mokri, daughter of the grand vizier El Mokri. A pioneer of modern painting in his country, he was immersed from an early age in a world of ancestral traditions, from which he escaped through drawing and painting. He cultivated his taste for the arts in secret, for fear of family judgment, until the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, and the founder of New York's Museum of Modern Art, General Goodyear, discovered his work and encouraged him to pursue it. Hassan El Glaoui was sent to France at the end of the 1940s, where he remained for some fifteen years. He attended Jean Souverbie's classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris, as well as the studio of painter Emilie Charmy. His first solo exhibition took place in Paris in 1950, followed by one in New York in 1952. In 1957, he took part in the 2nd Alexandria Biennial and in 1963 in the exhibition "Deux mille ans d'art au Maroc", at the Galerie Charpentier in Paris. In 1964, after a meeting with Prince Moulay Abdallah, he settled permanently in Morocco. His most emblematic works depict horses and riders in full cavalcade, notably at fantasias. For El Glaoui, horses were a passion, and he mastered their anatomy and movement. Moreover, his father's role and function made him a privileged witness to the public life of the court, and in particular of the King, whose public outings he portrayed.

    Hassan EL GLAOUI (1925-2023) Fantasia

Lot 189. HASSAN EL GLAOUI (1924–2018), “PARADE DE LA GARDE ROYALE” A vibrant and dynamic oil on canvas by Hassan El Glaoui, one of Morocco’s most celebrated modern painters, titled “Parade de la Garde Royale.” Rendered in El Glaoui’s signature style, the work captures an exuberant equestrian procession, with mounted riders and horses in motion across a richly hued red ground. His expressive palette—dominated by tones of vermilion, white, black, and ochre—and bold, rhythmic brushwork convey both the ceremony and the vitality of Moroccan life. The artist’s hallmark focus on equestrian and royal subjects reflects his lifelong fascination with horses, a recurring motif throughout his oeuvre. Signed Hassan El Glaoui lower left. His horses are both wild and tamed, figures of freedom and witnesses to history. Under his brush, they emerge like apparitions, at the crossroads of reality and myth." Brahim Alaoui, Mémoire et vision (IMA, 2014) In this remarkable work, El Glaoui displays his fascination for horses, a recurring and emblematic theme in his work. Here, he captures them in full cavalcade, in a rhythmic, almost choreographic composition. This green, rare in his palette, breaks with Morocco's traditional burnt earths and ochres, accentuating the expressive power of movement and form. The whole composition takes on an almost dreamlike dimension.

A certificate may be issued at the buyer's expense. A certificate may be issued at the purchaser's expense. Son of the pasha of Marrakech, Hassan El Glaoui grew up at the heart of a world where pomp, tradition and hospitality formed a daily theater. From an early age, he was fascinated by the horses he saw at the great fantasia organized by his father. A seminal scene sums up this early link between art and horses: when the painter Raoul Dufy was received in Marrakech in 1926, the young Hassan, still a child, dared to call out to him, "Monsieur, dessine-moi un cheval" ("Sir, draw me a horse"). Amused, Dufy sketched a horse with a fluid stroke that left a lasting impression on the child's memory. This memory, which remained vivid despite the loss of the drawing, acted as a symbolic key: the horse would become not only the central motif of his work, but also the medium of a quest for identity, poetry and spirituality. Later encouraged by Winston Churchill and several international patrons, Hassan El Glaoui pursued his artistic studies in Paris, where he attended the École des Beaux-Arts and Jean Souverbie's studio. Throughout his career, El Glaoui developed a body of work deeply rooted in Moroccan culture, in which the figure of the horse, often depicted in groups or in cavalcade, became the emblem of a recomposed memory. El Glaoui's free, nervous brushstrokes follow the form of movement, while his earthy backgrounds of ochre, green and reddish colors convey the inner landscapes of a painter enamored of silence and rhythm. Avoiding official circles, El Glaoui traces an independent path, between Paris and Rabat, between intimate memory and national heritage. His works, exhibited internationally, bear witness to a singular vision, that of an artist who, all his life, has painted the wind, the dust and the horses' momentum, like so many echoes of a world on the verge of disappearing.
