Gleizes' Verbindung zum synthetischen Kubismus ist auch in der späteren, harmonischen Zeichnung noch spürbar. Ces pages, rédigées à l’encre violette, présentent de nombreuses ratures et corrections, et des additions marginales. Mise au net d’un chapitre V (3 p.) : « Les lois de l’œuvre d’art ne peuvent être que dérivées de sa nature même. Ainsi apparaitront elles comme les constantes de son ordre. Ces lois seront donc des lois naturelles, invariables, des lois physiques auxquelles sont soumises la physique de ces matériaux »… Suivent 16 pages (1-10, 12-17) : « De ce qui précède il est aisé de déduire que les principes fondamentaux de la création esthétique, celle qui apparemment est considérée comme seule capable de satisfaire à la sensibilité d’aujourd’hui, non seulement en France mais partout ailleurs, trouvent leurs identifications dans les œuvres d’art du Passé renaissant et du Passé médiéval chrétien. […] La loi que nous essayons de formuler sera donc : Toute création plastique est conditionnée par le fait d’être un espace rythmé. La surface plane ne révèle ses propriétés formelles que par le fait du peintre. Le tableau est la conséquence de l’espace rythmé d’une surface plane »… Etc. Provenance: Collection of Prof.Dr. Wilhelm Salber, Kunsthaus Lempertz / Cologne, December 01, 1982, lot 284, Galerie Moenius, Berlin, Germany March 23, 2018 Artist Bio: Albert Gleizes, between1902 to 1905 began to paint seriously. Initially influenced by the Impressionists, at twenty-one his work La Seine a Asnieres was exhibited at the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1902. With several friends in 1906 he founded the Abbaye de Creteil outside Paris. This commune of artists and writers scorned bourgeois society and sought to create nonallegorical, epic art based on modern themes. The commune closed in 1908 due to financial restraints and in 1909 he came under the influence of Fernand Leger, Robert Delauney, Jean Metzinger and later to Henri Faucconnier who led Gleizes to his cubist style. In 1910 he exhibited at the Salon des Independents, Paris and the Jack of Diamonds in Moscow. Later in his career he was commissioned for murals for the Paris Worlds Fair of 1937. In 1947, a major Gleizes retrospective occurred in Lyons. His work is housed in many notable museum collections including: the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Guggenheim, Venice; and the Tate Gallery, London.

This work, created in 1923 and linked to the years of consolidation of synthetic cubism, displays a fragmented spatial construction where the human figures, recognizable but subjected to an intense geometric schematization, are inserted in an environment equally decomposed in chromatic planes and rhythms. The painting articulates an intimate scene through simplified volumes, broken lines and a deliberate use of two-dimensionality, which avoids any traditional illusion of depth to privilege the simultaneity of points of view and the analytical reading of forms. The colors, applied with an almost rough texture, combine bright yellows, greens and saturated blues, along with a series of rhythmic patterns in red and ochre that function as ornamental borders and support the structure of the whole. This chromatic choice responds to the spirit of the time, which sought to reconcile formal experimentation with a more accessible visual harmony after the radical ruptures of early Cubism. The central figure, possibly female, is presented in a posture that combines frontality with displaced profiles, a characteristic resource of cubist research on simultaneous perception. The bodies and objects are assembled like pieces of a compositional mechanism that balances constructive rigor and a certain expressive warmth, typical of Gleizes in the 1920s, when the movement was moving towards greater theoretical order and a purification of form. The result is a scene that does not narrate an event, but proposes a visual experience where the identity of the subjects is secondary to the rhythmic organization of space and the search for a conceptual unity between figure, background and geometric structure. During his early years, Gleizes works in his father's industrial design studio in Paris. Finally, after completing high school, he spent four years in the army and then began his career as a painter, initially doing landscapes. His first works are framed in impressionism, with works such as "La Seine à Asnières", exhibited at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1902. The following year he participated in the first Salon d'Automne in Paris, and soon came into contact with Fernand Léger, Robert Delaunay, Jean Metzinger and Heri Le Fauconnier. In 1910 he joined Cubism, of which he was one of the first and most important theoreticians, together with Metzinger. That same year he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. Three years later he participated in the collective of the Armory Show, in New York. During the war he enlisted again in the army, and after the war he moved to New York. He also traveled to Barcelona and Bermuda, and in 1916 he held his first individual exhibition at the Dalmau Galleries in Barcelona. Two years later we find him fully committed to the search for spiritual values, which will be reflected both in his painting and in his texts. In 1927 he founded in Sablons Moly-Sabata, a utopian community of artists and craftsmen, in a way a continuation of the Abbaye de Créteil that he had formed, together with other artists and writers, on the outskirts of Paris in 1906. In 1931, Gleizes participated in the Abstraction-Création committee that acted as a forum for international non-figurative art. By then, his work reflects the strengthening of his religious convictions and in 1932, in his book "La Forme et l'histoire" he examines Celtic, Romanesque and Oriental art. During these years he will give lectures in Poland and Germany, and will be hired to paint murals for the Paris Universal Exposition of 1937. Almost a decade later, between 1949 and 1950, he worked on illustrations for Blaise Pascal's book "Pensées sur l'homme et Dieu". In 1951 Gleizes was appointed jury of the Prix de Rome, and the French government awarded him the Legion of Honor. Considered a great renovator of religious art, in 1951 he produced his last great work, a fresco entitled "Eucharist" which he painted for the Jesuit chapel in Chantilly. Albert Gleizes is currently represented in the Guggenheim Museums in Venice and New York, the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo, the MoMA and the Metropolitan in New York, the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, the Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Tate Gallery and the Thyssen-Bornemisza, among other collections around the world. Along with Jean Metzinger, another major artist in the movement, he wrote the first theoretical work on Cubism called ‘Du Cubisme’ in 1912. Born in Paris in 1881, he started painting at the age of 21, around 1901, while serving in the military. He was mainly interested in Cubism, but also was influenced by the Impressionist works of Camille Pissarro and Henri Matisse’s bold use of colour, which would be pivotal in his cubist works, which he started painting around 1909 for an exhibition at the Salon des Independants in 1910. At the time this present work was completed, Gleizes was focusing more on his cubist compositions for numerous exhibitions, but from time to time, he would go back to his earlier style and complete a number of sketches, whether it be portrait or landscape and we can see the influence in the impression style from his earlier years and from Pissaro’s sketching style - the lines ink throughout the work portraying not just the stooped hills in the background, but emphasising the movement of the wind and clouds. The sheep in the foreground catches the eye of the viewer and adds a sense of calmness to the work, but the main focus of this work is the Shepherd and his dog. The Shepherd looks directly at the viewer, as if to look through their soul to evoke a memory. Both standing proudly on a hilltop, Gleizes incorporates the dog into the Shepherd’s jacket to show that he is more than just a sheep dog, but a fellow companion and this adds emotion to the work. Gleizes’ work as a teacher is often shadowed by Andre Lhote's reputation as one as well. Lhote taught many artists, particularly Irish, such as Mainie Jellett, Evie Hone, Norah McGuinness and Mary Swanzy, but Jellett and Hone, who were lifelong friends and travelled together, were studying under him for ten months as they wished to explore different ways to portray cubism and so they went to Albert Gleizes in Paris and spent around ten years studying under him and working with him from 1923 to the early 30s, laying the foundations to their highly successful future careers.
