JUAN ANTONIO GONZÁLEZ (Chiclana, Cádiz, 1842- Paris, c. 1920). "Harlequin", 1986. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in lower right corner. Measurements: 35.5 x 27 cm; 50 x 42.5 cm (frame). Painter settled in Paris in the second half of the XIX century, Juan Antonio González Jiménez was formed as a disciple of the painter Rodríguez, and participated in official exhibitions such as the Provincial of Cádiz of 1879, in which he was distinguished with a gold medal. Later he extended his studies in Paris with M. Pils. He specialized in the themes of casacons, called "de tableautin" in France, with works characterized by a personal chromatic delicacy, a special atmospheric sense, rigorous drawing and careful attention to detail. He also tackled other themes typical of the period, very much to the taste of the bourgeois clientele of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as the painting of flowers, portraits of majas and Spanish types, some of them inspired by portraits of the Baroque period. He also excelled as a portraitist, and painted some fans. Throughout his career, Juan Antonio González held exhibitions and took part in the Fine Arts Exhibition of Paris and in the Provincial Exhibition of Cadiz in 1879, being awarded a gold medal for a navy in the latter. He is currently represented in the Museum of Chiclana, as well as in private collections both national and international.

JUAN ANTONIO GONZALEZ JIMÉNEZ (Chiclana de la Frontera, Cádiz, 1842 - Paris, after 1914) "Portrait of a woman. Pastel on paper. Damage to the frame. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 120 x 80 cm; 156 x 115 cm (frame). Feminine portrait in which the author, arranges a woman elegantly dressed in full body, seated on a chair. The artist places the figure in an interior, and also adds a certain distance from the viewer. This is achieved by placing the lady slightly turned three-quarters of the way towards the viewer. The lady looks directly at the viewer with a certain degree of curiosity or reflection in her gesture. A painter who settled in Paris in the second half of the 19th century, Juan Antonio González Jiménez trained as a pupil of the painter Rodríguez and took part in official exhibitions such as the Provincial Exhibition in Cadiz in 1879, where he was awarded a gold medal. He later furthered his studies in Paris with M. Pils. He specialised in casacone themes, known as "de tableautin" in France, with works characterised by a personal chromatic delicacy, a special atmospheric sense, rigorous draughtsmanship and careful attention to detail. He also tackled other themes typical of the period, very much to the taste of the bourgeois clientele of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as flower painting, portraits of majas and Spanish types, some of which were inspired by portraits of the Baroque period. He also excelled as a portraitist and painted a number of fans. (lower left) oil on canvas 130.2 x 84.8 cm (51 1/4 x 33 3/8 in) The scene of figures in their finery lining up to compliment the new mother and admire the newborn afforded Gonzales the opportunity to poke fun at the mincing rituals and vacuous niceties of the bourgeoisie with a dry wit, and by presenting them in the silks and satins of the eighteenth century to indulge his talent for painting richly textured and finely coloured fabrics. The entrenched social hierarchy that the painting captures reads like a book. On the left the young mother in white is congratulated by the first elegant gentleman, while on the far right at the rear if the queue is the curÃ© in solemn robes of black; behind him two footmen prepare the table for lunch. In the centre of the group a third leading gentlemen wearing a tailcoat of gold silk looks down imperiously at the baby held by the nurse as he nochalantly flicks back his tails to reveal its deep viridian lining to the viewer; around him the ladies fuss, gossip and flirt. To underline this parade of vanities, behind the figures Gonzales hangs a huge mirror.
