    This 1882 Pre-Raphaelite and Aesthetic Movement inspired oil painting on canvas by British landscape painter Albert Goodwin depicts an idyllic classical garden overlooking a sunlit coastal bay. The composition features figures in classical robes tending to white doves on a lush, manicured lawn bordered by stone benching, tall pine trees, and flowering garden flora, set against a mountainous coastline stretching out to sea. Marked with a brass plaque identifying the artist and date along the lower frame liner, the painting is housed in a ornate carved and gilt-finished period frame with floral relief details. Turner (1775-1851), particularly in the artist's confident use of colour and light to produce works which are strikingly atmospheric.  Goodwin depicted the cathedral at Canterbury on multiple occasions, as, for example, in his watercolour which sold at Dreweatts on 14 June 2023, lot 143 (£1,800 hammer), as well as those of Salisbury and Chichester, including in his watercolours which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 29 July 2020, lot 275 (£3,000), and at Christie's, London, on 13 March 2013, lot 71 (£4,000).

    ALBERT GOODWIN BRITISH, 1845–1932 MOONLIGHT AT PORT ANTONIO, JAMAICA Watercolor and gouache on paper Lower left titled: moonlight at port Antonio Jamaica; lower right signed: Albert Goodwin Catalog note: Born in Maidstone in 1845, Albert Goodwin was the son of a builder and the brother of artists Frank and Henry Goodwin. While little is documented about his earliest artistic training, he exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy in 1860. As a teenager he was discovered painting from nature by Arthur Hughes, and subsequently studied with Hughes and Ford Madox Brown. He was introduced to John Ruskin, whose influence proved formative. Between 1870 and 1872 Goodwin worked for Ruskin and traveled with him in Italy, copying works of art and architectural subjects. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society, becoming a full member in 1881. Best known for his luminous landscapes and atmospheric coastal scenes, Goodwin retained the influence of Pre-Raphaelite principles throughout his career. He exhibited widely in England from 1860 to 1932 and held several one-man exhibitions, including at Birmingham Art Gallery in 1926. His works are represented in major public collections including the Tate, London, Manchester City Art Gallery, and Ulster Museum.

    Albert Goodwin, RWS,  British 1845-1932-  Flüelen, Lake Lucerne;  black chalk and watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed and indistinctly dated 'Albert Goodwin / 97[?]' (lower right) and inscribed 'Flulen [sic.], Lake Lucerne' (lower left), 24.3 x 36.5 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Goodwin was a prominent landscape painter who worked principally in watercolours. He was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite approach of Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893) and Arthur Hughes (1832-1915), under whom he studied. As well as producing a number of watercolours during his extensive travels, he was heavily inspired by the British landscape and returned to the subject repeatedly. Goodwin's paintings reveal the undeniable influence of J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), particularly in the artist's confident use of colour and light to produce works which are strikingly atmospheric.
