1626 Map of Bermuda by Abraham Goos - Framed

        Est: $100 - $200

Early 20th century printing of this famous map by Abraham Goos. 19 x 24 inches visible. Framed to 20.5 x 25.5 inches. Colored. Title in both English and Latin. The map was beautifully engraved by Abraham Goos (Dutch, fl. 1614-1643) in Amsterdam for Speeds Prospect Of The Most Famous Parts Of The World and his signature appears below the scale of miles. The atlas, when first published incorporated only two maps specifically relating to the New World - a general map of the Americas and this recently surveyed and large-scale map of the island. With the imprint of George Humble and dated 1626. Compiled in 1622 by Richard Norwood, this is the first English printed map published in an atlas that showed Bermuda divided into Tribes and Shares. These divisions designated the properties given to the Adventurers, led by Sir George Sommers, who were shipwrecked there in 1609. Speeds map became the standard map of the 17th century and was copied by Blaeu, Jansson, Ogilby and others. Some minor foxing in the borders, especially in the upper left corner. Still overall excellent condition. Complimentary drop off at Qwik Pack & Ship in Eastham MA. They will do the shipping and will contact you to arrange payment for shipping costs. They are very reasonable and do a good job.
