            Est: €12,000 - €14,000

LUIS GORDILLO (Seville, 1934). "Composition", 1980. Mixed media on cardboard adhered to board. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 72 x 101 cm; 75 x 103 cm (frame). In the set predominates the idea of a decomposed, fragmented and reinterpreted figuration, which induces the viewer's eye to go through the vignettes without order, looking indistinctly to one place or another. In this work the artist uses the resource of repetition, composing a rhythmic sense of the scene. "Gordillo considers an image that is subjected to a continuous process of reproduction, and never reaches a definitive state. On the other hand, after the discovery and practice of psychoanalysis, he introduced in his work the interest in meanings and the link between the world of thought." Luis Gordillo is one of the main figures of abstract art in Spain. After studying law and music he entered the School of Fine Arts in Seville. Between 1958 and 1960 he lived in Paris, where he was able to get to know an artistic and cultural environment full of freedom that influenced him. deeply. His first works move within the registers of informalism, following the guidelines of Michaux, Tapies, Millares, Wols, etc.. Later he would evolve towards Pop aesthetics, of which he is one of the pioneers in Spain. Later Gordillo would add to his particular style technological research, the transformation of images in the media and photographic creation. Throughout his career Gordillo has had a very accentuated dilemma between a very direct and expressive work and on the other hand the realization of a very controlled work, very clean and perfectionist in which mechanical techniques such as offset, photography and more recently the computer have influenced since the 70's. The linear element, the mixture of mechanical techniques such as offset, photography and more recently the computer. The linear element, the mixture of techniques and the inclusion of symbolic graphic elements, such as letters, are of considerable importance, approaching informalism. Of great international prestige, he has been awarded the National Prize for Plastic Arts (1981), the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts (1996), the Gold Medal of the Fine Arts Circle of Madrid (2004) and the Velázquez Prize for Plastic Arts (2007). He has also been distinguished in 2008 with the Order of Knight of Arts and Letters of France by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication. He has exhibited individually all over the world, and is represented in the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, MACBA in Barcelona, the Juan March Foundation, the ARTIUM in Vitoria, the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid, the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, the Folkwag Museum in Germany, etc.

LUIS GORDILLO (Seville, 1934). Untitled. Silkscreen, P.A. copy. Signed and justified by hand. Measurements: 74 x 44 cm. Luis Gordillo is one of the main figures of abstract art in Spain. Contemporary of the Spanish informalists of the fifties, Gordillo is nevertheless considered the pioneer of one of the most significant tendencies of the Spain of the seventies, the Madrid figuration. At first he studied law in his native Seville, but he soon left this career to devote himself to painting, enrolling in the School of Fine Arts. In 1958 he made a trip to Paris, where he became interested in the work of Jean Fautrier and Jean Dubuffet. During these years he follows an aesthetic path linked to Art Autre and Dau al Set, and holds his first exhibition at the Sala de Información y Turismo in Seville (1959). He will return again to Paris, and it is then when his painting is heading again towards figuration, revealing influences of Francis Bacon and American Pop. Thus, at the beginning of the sixties, his series of Cabezas and Autmovilistas will be the first non-mimetic incursion of a Spanish artist in the international Pop. During these years, moreover, his work was enriched by his incursions into psychoanalysis. He then temporarily abandoned painting and devoted himself to automatic drawing, exhibiting the fruits of this work in 1971 in Madrid. This exhibition was key for a whole generation of young artists, those who would initiate the new figuration in Madrid. During the seventies Gordillo transferred these automatic line drawings to canvas and filled them with color. In the eighties and nineties his language continued to evolve, crystallizing in a colder painting both in terms of color and in his personal detachment from the themes, placing himself halfway between the previous figuration and the new formulas of postmodern abstraction. Of great international prestige, Gordillo has been awarded the National Prize for Plastic Arts (1981), the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts (1996), the Gold Medal of the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid (2004), the Velázquez Prize for Plastic Arts (2007) and the National Engraving Prize (2012). Likewise, important exhibitions have been dedicated to him, such as the anthological exhibition of his graphic work held at the Calcografía Nacional in 2012. Throughout his career he has exhibited individually all over the world, and is currently represented in the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, MACBA in Barcelona, the Juan March Foundation, the ARTIUM in Vitoria, the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid, the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, the Folkwag Museum in Germany, etc.

LUIS GORDILLO (Seville, 1934). "New York Series", 1974. Photograph on baryta paper. Copy 2/3. Enclosed certified photocopy of the certificate of the complete collection, signed by the artist. Sizes: 38 x 29 cm; 52 x 42 cm (frame). Photograph belonging to the New York series which consists of 24 pieces in total, each of the three series made in 1979. In it, the urban characteristics of the city can be observed, placing the spectator above the city, thus giving him the capacity to extend his field of vision, which in this case reaches the river. The piece is not limited to showing the city's buildings from a bird's eye viewpoint, but the artist has incorporated small white geometric elements on the photograph. These small pieces break with the urbanism of the photograph and generate a dialogue that alludes to the coexistence between the simple and the complex. Luis Gordillo is one of the leading figures of abstract art in Spain. After studying law and music, he entered the School of Fine Arts in Seville. Between 1958 and 1960 he lived in Paris, where he became acquainted with an artistic and cultural environment full of freedom which influenced him profoundly. He was deeply influenced by it. His first works move within the informalist registers, following the guidelines of Michaux, Tapies, Millares, Wols, etc. Later he would evolve towards the Pop aesthetic, of which he was one of the pioneers in Spain. Later Gordillo would add to his particular style technological research, the transformation of images in the media and photographic creation. Throughout his career Gordillo has had a very marked dilemma between a very direct and expressive work and, on the other hand, the creation of a very controlled, clean and perfectionist work in which mechanical techniques such as offset, photography and more recently the computer have influenced since the 70s. The linear element, the mixture of techniques and the inclusion of symbolic graphic elements, such as letters, are of considerable importance and come close to informalism. Of great international prestige, he has been awarded the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas (1981), the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes (1996), the Medalla de Oro del Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid (2004) and the Premio Velázquez de Artes Plásticas (2007). In 2008 he was also awarded the Order of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres de France by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication. He has had solo exhibitions all over the world, and is represented at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, MACBA in Barcelona, the Juan March Foundation, the ARTIUM in Vitoria, the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid, the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, the Folkwag Museum in Germany, etc.

LUIS GORDILLO (Seville, 1934). “Composition”, 1990. Silkscreen, copy 68/99. Signed and justified by hand. Measurements: 80 x 121 cm.; 65 x 126 cm. (frame). Luis Gordillo is one of the main figures of abstract art in Spain. A contemporary of the Spanish informalists of the 1950s, Gordillo is nevertheless considered the pioneer of one of the most significant trends in Spain in the 1970s, Madrid figuration. At first he studied Law in his native Seville, but he soon left this career to dedicate himself to painting, enrolling in the School of Fine Arts. In 1958 he made a trip to Paris, where he became interested in the work of Jean Fautrier and Jean Dubuffet. During these years he followed an aesthetic path linked to Art Autre and Dau al Set, and held his first exhibition at the Information and Tourism Hall of Seville (1959). He will return to Paris again, and it is then that his painting will once again move towards figuration, revealing influences from Francis Bacon and American Pop. Of great international prestige, Gordillo has been awarded the National Prize for Plastic Arts (1981), the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts (1996), the Gold Medal of the Círculo de Bellas Artes of Madrid (2004), the Velázquez Prize for Plastic Arts (2007) and the National Engraving Prize (2012). Likewise, important exhibitions have been dedicated to him, such as the anthology of graphic works held at the National Calcography in 2012.
