λ DORA GORDINE (ESTONIAN 1895-1991), MARY VERA HEPWORTH NÉE HOPKIN

        Est: £6,000 - £8,000

λ DORA GORDINE (ESTONIAN 1895-1991)MARY VERA HEPWORTH NÉE HOPKINBronze with green patina Signed and numbered 1/253.5 x 2cm (21 x 0¾ in.)Provenance:Direct from the artist, sculpture for Mary's 21st birthday Thence by descent to the present owner The sitter depicted in the present lot is Mary Vera Hepworth née Hopkin. She was born in Bangkok, Thailand on 20 September 1918. Her father was Harry 'Hoppy' Hopkin, then a journalist on the Straits Times, Singapore, and her mother was Nadia, a dancer, born in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. Mary's grandfather, Engel, was a tailer in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia and was responsible for the clothes worn by the workers responsible for the construction of the Trans Siberian Railway. Many of his co-workers were circus people and taught Engel and his family a whole range of circus skills. Following the completion of the railway the group of worker's including Engel and his family decided to travel to Shanghai to become street entertainers. After touring with Colonel Phyllis and his circus across China, Vietnam and Laos the family decided to buy a hotel, King Chulalonghorn himself becoming a habitué, as did the Sultan of Johore. Nadia and her sisters danced for the King at his Palace and were paid in gold. So when Hoppy, Mary's father walked in to the hotel, one day, on the lookout for a new story and his gaze fell on a dancing Nadia, he was struck. They were married, and had two girls, Nadia and Mary.Eventually Mary joined the Straits Times, to edit the society page, under the pen name Vera Ardmore - Ardmore being the name of the flats in which they lived. She had already met Dora as Hoppy had introduced Dora to Nadia as he thought her Russian/Ukrainian background would be of interest to her, and they all became friends. Some years later Hoppy came to London to join the Daily Mail as foreign editor. Dora heard of it and proposed they take the vacant house beside her newly built studios in Kingston which they did and was how and why, for a 21 birthday present, Dora sculpted Mary's nude figure. Mary married Joseph Bulmer Hepworth on 27th June 1947, who was the grandson of Joseph Hepworth who founded the nationwide tailoring company Hepworths, whose trading name changed to NEXT in 1990.

λ DORA GORDINE (ESTONIAN 1895-1991), STANDING FEMALE DANCER

        Est: £2,500 - £3,500

λ DORA GORDINE (ESTONIAN 1895-1991)STANDING FEMALE DANCER Bronze with green patina Signed and numbered 2/6 to the base Height 65cm (25½ in.)'If people really want to know me, let them look at my sculpture, because words are not my medium at all. It is sculpture that is my medium.' Dora GordineDora Gordine's Standing Dancer captures the movement and elegance of the female form. Gordine explored themes of motherhood and womanhood through her bold, strong and yet feminine sculptures, usually cast in bronze. Gordine was initially influenced by a group of artists in her homeland Estonia coined 'Noor Eesti' who followed the concepts and ideals of the Art Nouveau movement. In 1924, Gordine relocated to Paris and was immediately encapsulated by the rich French culture frequently visiting the multitude of galleries, operas and museums. In 1925, Gordine worked for the British Pavilion at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, as a mural painter. This opportunity provided her with the means to start producing bronze sculptures again and Gordine went on to exhibit her works at the Beaux Arts Society and the Salon Des Tuileries in 1926 where she presented a head and torso sculpture of a Chinese philosopher which was met with great acclaim. Back in London in 1928, the Leicester Galleries held Gordine's first solo show, which proved to be a great success; all of the pieces selling including one to Samuel Courtauld. In 1936, Dora married the Hon. Richard Gilbert Hare and together they built Dorich House in Kingston Vale which doubled up as their home to showcase their personal collection of Russian Art and furniture but also her studio to create and display her sculptures. Through her husband's connections Gordine became immersed within London's fashionable elite. Figures such as Sir Kenneth Clark, Dame Beryl Grey and Professor Frederick Brown, head of the Slade School of Art all jumped at the opportunity to sit for Gordine. The present lot signifies Gordine's approach to sculpture, she felt sculpture was a tool to depict not only identifiable features but capture the vision of a sitter. The figure stands poised, caught in a moment of movement oblivious to the onlooker. 'You have to imagine what they are like inside and bring out their inner feeling and then put it in a form.' Dora Gordine, BBC Interview, 1972

Publ. Bond & Coyne Association 2005. Dora Gordine : sculptor, artist, designer by Jonathan Black and Brenda Martin 2007 Born in Estonia, Dora Gordine (1895 - 1991) achieved critical acclaim in 1926 with her bronze Head of a Chinese Philosopher exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries. She married Richard Hare and in the 1930s they built Dorich House in Kingston, South West London where she lived until her death in 1991. Dorich House is now a museum housing a permanent collection of her work and her husband's extensive collection of Russian Imperial Art. Her work is also on display in Tate Britain and Tate Modern. A modeller rather than a carver Gordine's work engages key themes of portraiture, iconic "racial" heads, and the occasional mask. She was a contemporary of Jacob Epstein and exhibited with him in 1928 at the Leicester Gallery. Baby's Head, one of her pieces at that exhibition, is close in concept to Epstein's earlier models of Baby Asleep. Dora Gordine's work at the Tate reflects her importance as a major presence in 20th century European sculpture.
