Feigen & Co., New York The Collection of the Stare Family, purchased from the above, 1970 Hirschl & Adler Galleries, New York Nancy Singer, Clayton, Missouri Exhibited: Chicago, Illinois, Museum of Contemporary Art, Twentieth-Century Drawings from Chicago Collections, September 15 -November 11, 1973 (as Untitled) This work is recorded in the Arshile Gorky catalogue raisonné under entry no. D0921, as Untitled. Lot Essay: Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot see physically with his eyes....Abstract art enables the artist to perceive beyond the tangible, to extract the infinite out of the finite. It is the emancipation of the mind. It is an exploration into unknown areas. -- Arshile Gorky, (Armenian/American, 1904-1948) The Old Pirate, as described by Arshile Gorky to his gallerist, Julien Levy, was a mongrel dog who frequently traipsed into his yard. His crossings (and likely haggard looks) earned him his nickname. The problem with this, Levy would later note, was that at the time Gorky had no yard, nor any neighbors with dogs. The Pirate in question was then most likely a visitor of the farm belonging to Saul Schary in New Milford, Connecticut, where Gorky would spend several weeks at the end of 1942 and experience a major stylistic redirection evident throughout the remainder of his career. Indeed, there is a dog. Untitled (Study for the Pirate), 1942, features a wide-headed creature, all snarls and quizzical eyebrows, that would appear slightly camouflaged in the ensuing finished painting, The Pirate, and then appear again later in its companion work, an even more colorfully lucid The Pirate II. Gorky, born Vosdanik Adoian in the village of Khorkom, Armenia, suffered ethnic persecution following the Turkish invasion and fled to Russian-occupied territory. His mother died in front of him from starvation on a march in 1919. A year later, at sixteen, Gorky emigrated to the United States, though the loss and trauma he experienced in his formative years would critically influence him as an artist and human. In reinventing his identity, Gorky changed his name, claiming to be a Georgian noble and becoming increasingly vague about his year of birth. He was heavily influenced by the likes of Picasso, Cézanne, Matta, Léger, and Miró -- enough to be teased about the similarities in his work -- before finally arriving at his own signature style, a true master of reinvention in all senses. He gained the approval of André Breton, the self-appointed Father of Surrealism, and began spending time in rural Connecticut where he explored childhood memories and organic themes of camouflage and concealment. These new works contained mythical motifs, free-floating, loose biomorphic forms both anatomical and floral – and a frequent visitor, a certain old mongrel Pirate. The connection to Breton gave him the opportunity to obtain a contract with Julien Levy, who would remain his gallerist until Gorky’s untimely death. His work would come to be collected by notable institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, Joseph H. Hirshhorn and Peggy Guggenheim, among others. After a brutal series of personal tragedies, Gorky died by suicide in 1948. His contributions to the art world and visual communication are difficult to overestimate. Though Gorky has been called the last Surrealist and first Abstract Expressionist, the sketches he prepared for his paintings were evidence of careful planning and a lack of spontaneous automatism that would have barred his true entry into either group. Instead, Gorky’s works sit somewhere in between, narrative and sensitive, careful in their honesty and evolving from an entirely new language of his own invention.

Signed and dated 'A. Gorky 46' right in the image. Paper label verso with typographical work information. Photo confirmation from Agnes Gorky Philips (copy) In 1941 Arshile Gorky became one of the first artists in America to begin working with the European surrealists’ technique of “écriture automatique”. Other painters like Willem de Kooning followed his example from the mid-1940s. Until his early death in 1948, Gorky attempted to use this technique for converting the unconscious into an image to come to terms with his extremely emotionally charged memories of his native Armenia. His initially idyllic childhood in Armenia was extinguished by the systematic persecution, deportation and killing of the Armenian populace through the Ottoman military which began in 1915. His family was torn apart and his mother died as a refugee; the young Gorky succeeded in emigrating to the US with one of his sisters. His intensive nature studies of plants and animals represent an additional thematic complex that is fundamental to his work and is of a completely different character. These combine into biomorphic forms in his paintings and drawings and become unified with his visualisations of his traumatic memories. “The linear elements, spontaneously doodled, seem to meander, and the color areas are fluid and spill over the surface. As if possessed by memories and psychic pressures, Gorky improvised abstract amalgams of human, animal, and plant parts, a new order of ‘hybrid’ organisms, as Breton characterized them. […] Gorky was the first American avant-garde painter to recognize that ‘the vital task was a wedding of abstraction and surrealism’, as Adolph Gottlieb observed, and that ‘out of these opposites something new could emerge’” (Irving Sandler, Abstract Expressionism and the American Experience: a Reevaluation, Lenox/New York 2009, p. 76). As is rendered strikingly clear by the two drawings made available here, Arshile Gorky’s profoundly personal works contain dramatic as well as poetic elements and possess a balanced compositional beauty in spite of the largely spontaneous and unplanned action of their drawing.

        ARSHILE GORKY Untitled.

        Est: $10,000 - $15,000

ARSHILE GORKY Untitled. Etching, circa 1930. 127x98 mm; 5x3 7/8 inches. Signed and numbered 1/1 in pencil, lower margin. A superb impression of this exceedingly scarce, early etching. Gorky (1904-1948) was a profound figure in American art, celebrated for his blending of European Surrealism into Abstract Expressionism. He is considered one of the first Abstract Expressionists, paving the way to the movement with his highly original, lyrical and rhythmic compositions. Gorky, born as Vostanik Manoog Adoyanm, emigrated to the U.S. in 1920 and changed his name to escape the Armenian genocide. He studied at the New School of Design in Boston, and the Grand Central School of Art in New York. His work evolved drastically throughout his career as he studied the works of artists he admired, such as Pablo Picasso, Paul Cézanne and Joan Miró. Gorky stressed the importance of studying from the masters and came to his distinct style through years of continuous experimentation and innovation.

        Arshile GORKY.

        Est: €3,000 - €4,000

Arshile GORKY. Untitled. Undated [ca. 1945]. Original drawing, pen and ink on paper (27 x 30 cm): framed. Original composition by Arshile Gorky (1905-1948). A surrealist painter who arrived from Armenia in 1920, Arshile Gorky (1905-1948) stood out from the American artists of his time. Referring to "the spring of the eye" in the preface to the catalogue of the 1945 exhibition of his paintings at Julien Levy's in New York, André Breton said: "Arshile Gorky is for me the first painter to whom this secret has been fully revealed. The eye [...] is made to throw a lineament, to pass a thread between things of the most heterogeneous appearance. [...] This is an entirely new art, the antithesis of everything that, with the help of fashion and confusion, tends today to simulate surrealism by merely outwardly counterfeiting its approach." (Text reprinted in Le Surréalisme et la Peinture, Pléiade IV, pp. 589-592.) Gorky will illustrate Breton's 1946 book published by View in New York, Young Cherry Trees secured against Hares. Provenance: Galerie 1900-2000, with label on back.

Private Collection, New York.. Footnote: Note This work is recorded in the Arshile Gorky Foundation Archives under registration number D1540. The Arshile Gorky drawings Landscape (Lot 17), Portrait of a Woman (Lot 18), and Portrait of David Burliuk (Lot 19) are from the collection of Russian expatriate and artist David Burliuk, who lived and worked in Manhattan and later Long Island, and led a cohort of painters casually known as the Hampton Bays Group. The group consisted of a diverse circle of artists, from different countries and backgrounds, including Raphael and Soyer Moses, Nicolai Cikovsky, Milton Avery, and Gorky himself. The artists shared left-leaning political philosophies and concern for the poor immigrant experience in New York. They exhibited together in New York at the ACA Galleries, the New School for Social Research, and the Société Anonyme. Unable to afford models, the group’s artists used each other as sitters, as well as studying the city around them, experimenting with their diverse styles. Burliuk and Gorky drew and painted each other many times, including in the charming portrait Portrait of David Burliuk (Lot 19), drawn on the back of a restaurant menu, hinting at the collegiality and affection between the two immigrant artists. The other two drawings, Portrait of a Woman (Lot 18) and Landscape (Lot 17) demonstrate Gorky’s early influences, particularly the work of Paul Cézanne, before his later Expressionist and Surrealist work. Gorky’s impact is still widely felt in the art world, with a major retrospective at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 2009, and paintings in many prominent museum collections around the world.
