Louis Gossin (1846-1928) The French sculptor was a student of Mathurin Moreau and together with his brother Etienne Gossin (died in 1900), who was also a sculptor, he ran a workshop for the production of terracotta statues. Gossin also created a variety of statues, statuettes and groups in marble, bronze, stone, plaster and occasionally in cast iron. He particularly focused on genre scenes or mythological and allegorical subjects. In 1882, Gossin received a 3rd class medal, in 1886 this was followed by the 2nd class medal. Terracotta France, early 20th century Louis Gossin (1846-1928) – French sculptor Signed at the side ‘Gossin et Fils’ Allegorical representation, presumably allegory of letterpress art Positioned in animated contrapposto with free leg and supporting leg On oval base Softly smiling facial features Overall dimensions: 132 x 48 x 30 cm Good condition Rare form of presentation of the art of book printing as allegory All purchases will be available for collection by the buyer at the Ehrl Collection, once the hammer price plus all applicable commissions have been paid in full. On request, shipping can be organized by the Ehrl Collection at the buyer’s expense. Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 7,000 Euro Offered allegorical representation in the form of an upright standing woman depicts the art of book printing. In line with classical traditions, she is wearing a multi-folded tunic. In her right hand she holds a scroll, this is to be interpreted as symbol of wisdom, knowledge and scholarship. The scroll is also attribute of Polyhymnia, Muse of eloquence. To her left a book press is displayed, from which peeks a printed scroll. It is a masterfully executed sculpture and is also distinguished by its uniqueness. Condition: The sculpture is in a good condition with minimal signs of age and wear in the shape of partial blemishes. For example, parts of the left arm are missing. The overall dimensions measure 132 x 48 x 30 cm. His works have for example been exhibited at the Salon de Paris and today they can for instance be seen in Toulouse at the Musée des Augustins.
