He then began studying economics, philosophy and art history at the University of Kiel before devoting himself entirely to art. In 1919 he received private painting lessons from Hans Ralfs, an expressionist who introduced him to the influence of Edvard Munch. In 1920 Gotsch moved to the Dresden Art Academy, where he first studied with Otto Hettner and from 1921 to 1923 as a master student with Oskar Kokoschka. His early work shows a clear influence of Expressionism, which he combined with graphic elements. Gotsch traveled to the United States, Paris, Italy and southern France in the 1920s before moving to Berlin in 1933, where his work was increasingly hindered by the Nazis. During the Second World War his Berlin studio was destroyed and he served as an interpreter. After the end of the war, he settled in Sankt Peter-Ording and became involved in cultural politics before devoting himself entirely to painting again in the 1950s. His late works show influences from Cubism, the COBRA group and African art. He died in Schleswig in 1984. Gotsch's work is characterized by lively expressionism, complemented by experimental, abstract tendencies and meditative image design.
