Jan van Goyen(1596-1656)
Who is Jan van Goyen?
(b Leiden, Netherlands 1596; d The Hague 1656) Dutch painter and draughtsman. Jan van Goyen ranks as one of the leading and most prolific Dutch 17th-century landscape artists. He spent much of the 1620s heavily influenced by Esaias van de Velde, under whom he had studied in 1618-19. In 1627 he broke away from the example of his master and his works after this date show a new maturity which marks the beginning of his own individual style. His winter landscapes of the 1620s are characterized, like van de Velde's, by a composition cluttered with figures, buildings and trees. During his travels van Goyen filled several sketchbooks with rapid studies of landscapes, buildings, animals and figures, which he would then use as the basis for elements in his oil paintings. Van Goyen reached the pinnacle of his creative work in the 1640s. By the end of the preceding decade the artist had achieved notable recognition as one of the foremost landscapists of his generation. Van Goyen was appointed head of the Guild of Saint Luke in The Hague in 1638, and again in 1640. Although he employed a restricted palette, van Goyen was able to capture an enormous range of atmospheric effects and achieve a masterly sense of depth in his compositions. The dramatic effects of the weather were constant themes of van Goyen's work throughout his career.

Jan van Goyen (1596-1656) - Attributed to, Pair of Village Landscapes

Lot 65: Jan van Goyen (1596-1656) - Attributed to, Pair of Village Landscapes

Auction Date: Jun 05, 2021

Estimate: €10,000 - €12,000

Description: The two high-quality village landscapes with rich, lively figure staffage juxtapose two popular peasant themes that were often dealt with in one picture, namely peasants celebrating and peasants fighting each other, whereby in both cases the occasion is a village fair. The village landscape with the dancing peasants is dominated by a large tree to the right of the center, onto which the light falls from the side, bathing the treetop in a dramatic play of light and shadow. The foreground with a group of farmers in the middle is in deep shadow. The scene with the dancing peasants stands out all the brighter on the left. They dance around the violin player on the barrel. In the background on the left, the stalls can be seen. A river flows past the village on the right. The village landscape with the peasant fight in front of the inn shows the consequences of excessive drinking during the fair. The peasants approach each other with brooms, chairs, and pitchforks. A man has drawn his dagger but is being led away by his wife. On the left edge of the picture, sales stalls can be seen in bright light. Again a shadow zone occupies the foreground. A large, dark tree frames the landscape on the right. To the right of him, you can see a stand in the shade where a seller is offering food. Both compositions work effectively with strong contrasts of light and shadow and the juxtaposition of large and small motifs to create a varied scenery. The design of trees and houses follows the concept of the “picturesque”, as Dutch art theorists put it: the houses are crooked and crooked, the trees gnarled. The picture with the dancing peasants also shows the Dutch flag....

Jan van Goyen (1596-1656) - Attributed to, Pair of Village Landscapes

Lot 65: Jan van Goyen (1596-1656) - Attributed to, Pair of Village Landscapes

Auction Date: May 22, 2021

The design of trees and houses follows the concept of the “picturesque”, as Dutch art theorists put it: the houses are crooked, the trees gnarled.

JAN JOSEPHSZOON VAN GOYEN (Leiden, 1596- The Hague, 1656). River landscape.

Lot 43: JAN JOSEPHSZOON VAN GOYEN (Leiden, 1596- The Hague, 1656). River landscape.

Auction Date: Dec 03, 2020

Estimate: €35,000 - €40,000

Description: JAN JOSEPHSZOON VAN GOYEN (Leiden, 1596- The Hague, 1656). "River landscape", around 1630-1640. Oil on oak panel. French frame from the last third of the 19th century. Provenance: Important Spanish noble collection since the mid-19th century. Measurements: 65 x 43 cm; 82 x 60 cm (frame) A river like a mirror reflects the landscape. He is the true protagonist of our work and one of the main conductive threads of the great works of the Dutch master Van Goyen. Two banks of a river that divides diagonally the painting and at the same time doubles on its surface not only the figures and elements that surround it but absorbs the sky and even dilutes the atmosphere of the whole environment. In the central part of the painting we see a boatman having left the shore a few meters away while his companion at the end of the boat seems to release the nets into the water. After them the scene is repeated with three other fishermen in the same task. The print is lost in the distance in which we meticulously find the pointed spirtel of the bell tower of a church next to the same river in which large, tinyly painted naves seem to get lost and merge with the landscape. White candlesticks can hardly be distinguished between the vastness of a cloudy sky. Taking up the area closest to us we can find a woman washing in the river with her daughter. We understand that this margin of the river is the end of a path that would continue on the other side where there are waiting for some pieces of ceramic carefully placed on straw. At the edge of the road following the wood cover opens a door in which a humble villager crosses the threshold to enter a picturesque and simple property with two simple and modest almost ruinous cabins. These constructions are almost subjected to the vegetation that surrounds them as the magnificent central oak so repeated in other compositions of the artist. With an ochre base the painter covered the entire oak board from which seems to emanate next to the cracking typical of the passage of time some thin lines typical of the veins of the oak board. This base disappears and arises in certain areas such as the central hut and its reflection on the water. In this way he manages to create an atmosphere in the total set of painting. It brings together all the elements under the same shade on which a precise color palette will overlap until each of the elements is shaped and thus give not only perspective or dimension to the viewer but the ability to almost feel the same air of the scene. This brilliant is also sighted in the use of white. A lead target that overlaps layer by layer on the bottoms and in the river generating a kind of mist mixed by cloudiness and the surface of the water. An interesting work for clearly representing the typical Dutch landscape, of which van Goyen would be one of his great masters and more repercussions had this genre throughout the seventeenth century. His paintings on the fields, canals and rivers of Roterdam, Leiden or Delft made him a painter highly valued in his time and highly recognized by the painters to come who would imitate his style. He painted many of the canals in and around The Hague, as well as the villages surrounding Delft, Rotterdam, Leiden and Goud....

Jan van Goyen, Landscape with a Farmstead and a Traveller

Lot 2030: Jan van Goyen, Landscape with a Farmstead and a Traveller

Auction Date: Nov 14, 2020

Estimate: €30,000 - €40,000

Description: The present landscape by van Goyen belongs to a series of paintings dated to 1628/1629 (see Ulrich Beck: Jan van Goyen, vol. II, Amsterdam 1973, no. 1056, 1057, 1059, 1075). They show a similar farmstead on the right, a shady area in the foreground and dappled sunlight in the mid ground. Their motif is a landscape of low dunes without water combined with a simple dwelling, often a thatched cottage. Due to their sparse staffage, the inhabitants of these lonely farmsteads appear to be absent, which is what lends these pictures their great sense of peace and special charm. The anecdotal qualities of van Goyen's early works is missing, but the painterly quality of his more monochrome style with its characteristic yellowish and grey-green tones gains in importance....
