Morris Graves Sold at Auction Prices

Bird painter, Painter, b. 1910 - d. 2001

Morris Graves was an American painter who found inspiration in birds and Asian art and philosophy. He worked and lived in Ireland and the United States, including a five-month period in Honolulu during which he painted approximately 50 works of art. Historians often say that Graves’ artist retreat — the Morris Graves Foundation foundation — and his self-built homes are among his lasting legacies.

About Morris Graves

  • Artist name: Morris Graves

  • Alias: Morris Cole Graves

  • Profession: Painter

  • Nationality: American

Morris Graves was an American painter known for his Abstract Expressionist paintings of nature, especially his depictions of birds. He is also known for his affinity for Asian art and philosophy, especially Buddhism, introduced to him by American painter Mark Tobey.

When he was 17 years old, Graves abandoned his high school studies to pursue a short career as a sailor, traveling as far as Japan. In his early twenties, Graves returned to the states to live with family in Texas, who successfully persuaded him to return to high school and receive his diploma. In 1933, Graves set up a studio with Guy Anderson in La Conner, Washington, and nine years later, he exhibited his work at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

Graves attempted to return to Japan in 1947 when he became a Guggenheim Fellow, but the United States blocked his travel. Instead, Graves studied and worked in Honolulu for five months, producing approximately 50 paintings during his time there. Graves was ultimately able to travel in Asia and Europe, and he lived in Ireland from 1954 to 1964.

In 1964, Graves bought a home in Loleta, California and transformed it into an artists’ retreat called the Morris Graves Foundation, which still exists today. Art historians argue that this foundation, along with Graves’ self-built homes across the world — such as the Careladen in Woodway, Washington — are among his most lasting legacies.

(76.2 x 50.8cm) Provenance Willard Gallery, New York, New York. Sotheby's Arcade, New York, sale of June 23, 1987, lot 409. Acquired directly from the above sale.  The Collection of Sidney Rothberg, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Exhibition “Paintings, Drawings and Sculptures Collected by Yale Alumni,” Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut, May 19-June 26, 1960, no. 215.  Literature Paintings, Drawings and Sculptures Collected by Yale Alumni, Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, 1960, no. 215 (illustrated). Lot Essay Rothberg turned to Graves for his mystical qualities, which echoed several other works in his large Collection. This is not entirely surprising as Graves was one of a group of four artists from the Pacific Northwest known as The Mystics, who were celebrated for their “remarkable art of shimmering lines and symbolic forms,” and that “embody a mystical feeling toward life and the universe."  Graves' mostly painted fauna, especially birds, which he rendered in a very spare, fluid way that recall his deep love for Asian Art. Here, the Young Gander stands proudly, with a hint of humor, uncanny in side-eye stare. Executed quickly with an economy of line and color, the bird almost stands as a totem, a symbol.
