The composition features a rust-streaked ocean-going tanker navigating a rolling, deep-emerald sea, accompanied by a hard-working tugboat in the foreground. Gray, who famously lived aboard boats for much of his life, imbues the scene with an atmospheric authenticity; the low-hanging clouds and the hazy sunlight filtering through the masts suggest the bracing, salt-sprayed air of the North Atlantic. The painting showcases Gray’s characteristic "seaman’s perspective." Unlike many marine artists who painted from the safety of the shore, Gray captured the ocean from the waterline.
