§ Alan Green (British 1932-2003) Green Descending to Brown signed, titled and dated 94 to the reverse oil on canvas (unframed) 70 x 70cm Provenance: With Annely Juda Fine Art, London Footnote: In the mid-1960s, no doubt inspired by American abstract painters such as Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman and reacting against the increasingly pervasive influence of the St. Ives School, Alan Green unveiled his first field-paintings. Green would continue to mature and refine his style of abstraction over the next four decades. Born in London in 1932, Green studied at Beckenham School of Art and The Royal College of Art where he trained as an illustrator, printmaker and graphic artist. It is thought that this path of study, free from the spectre of art history and the shackles of traditional painting techniques, helped steer Green towards abstraction. During this period, Green also spent two years on National Service, posted in Japan and Korea, where he developed an appreciation for the aesthetics of Japanese Minimalism and met the distinguished Japanese potter, Shoji Hamada, who would prove to be a hugely influential figure in his life and work. A peer of Bernard Leach, Hamada not only tutored Green in studio pottery techniques, but also instilled in him the importance of grinding his own pigments and fashioning his own tools. Both colour and tool use would remain critical in Green's practice throughout his career. Displaying a restrained, modulated palette and a meticulously scraped and combed surface, the present lot is reflective of Green's larger body of work and the experiences that helped to shape it.

ALAN GREEN (1932 London 2003) Angled Green to Violet/Black. 1994. Oil on canvas. Signed, dated and titled on the reverse: ALAN GREEN 1994 ANGLED GREEN TO VIOLET/BLACK. 70 x 70 cm. Provenance: - Annely Juda Fine Art, London (verso with the label). - Private collection Switzerland. "I wish I could use colour like that." Francis Bacon Born in 1932 in London, Alan Green studied from 1949 to 1953 at the Beckenham School of Art. After completing three years of national service in Korea and Japan as a cartographer, he continued his art studies at the Royal College of Art. His education as an illustrator and graphic designer helped him to detach himself from the precepts and restraints of art history. On graduating in 1958, Green entered the teaching profession, which took him to Hornsey College of Art and the Leeds College of Art amongst other places. As an artist, from early on he worked very closely with the Annely Juda Gallery. From around 1978 he was able to live solely from his art. Alongside numerous group and solo shows, his solo show at Tate Britain and his participation in documenta 6 in 1977 are probably the most important. He is one of the most well-known exponents of Concrete Art in England. Alan Green died of cancer in 2003. Through a visit to the Japanese potter Shoji Hamada during his military service, the young artist learned that it was possible to integrate one’s art into one’s life and, above all, that artmaking also involves a process. So, he began to produce his own paints, as well as his stencils and combs. The present work from 1994 shows Green’s method of working to great effect. His colour palette in this case is a gradation from green through an almost recognisable violet, to black. The precise use of paint was crucial for Green. His surface treatment is a play of monochrome, from the calm to the animated, worked with the scraper and spatula in a great variety of ways. The combination of these different ways of working on the canvas lend his works depth, tension and an unbelievable dynamism. With this approach Alan Green trod a unique path amongst the artists of Concrete Art. --------------- ALAN GREEN (1932 London 2003) Angled Green to Violet/Black. 1994. Öl auf Leinwand. Verso signiert, datiert und betitelt: ALAN GREEN 1994 ANGLED GREEN TO VIOLET/BLACK. 70 X 70 cm. Provenienz: - Annely Juda Fine Art, London (verso mit dem Etikett). - Privatsammlung Schweiz. "I wish I could use colour like that."
