LITERATURE: J.M. Forman, "King o' Dreams," Harper's Weekly, May 1903, illustrated. "When Elizabeth Shippen-Green won an exclusive contract as an illustrator with Harper's Monthly in 1901, she achieved a triumph that instantly elevated her into the select company of famed illustrators such as Edwin Austin Abbey and Howard Pyle, during what is considered America's ‘golden age' of illustration (1880-1920). Few women attained such remarkable success in a time when men overwhelmingly dominated this highly competitive field. As one of the celebrated artistic triumvirate known as ‘The Red Rose Girls,' Green and colleagues Jessie Wilcox Smith and Violet Oakley became shining examples of women illustrators at the turn of the century...although her work shares similarities with that of other women in her profession, it stands apart in its scope, quality, and originality." The Child / A Calendar - 1904.

          Est: $2,500 - $3,000

ARTIST: JESSIE WILLCOX SMITH (1863-1935) & ELIZABETH SHIPPEN GREEN (1871-1954) SIZE: Each: 13 x 19 in./33 x 48.4 cm PRINTER: C. W. Beck, Philadelphia DESCRIPTION: Created by two of America’s preeminent female illustrators, this rare illustrated calendar is a classic. In 1904, Frank Leslie’s Popular Monthly reported, “It is not often... that a child’s calendar serves two years, or that it is elevated into a book after doing its work as a mere record of days and weeks. Yet ‘The Child,’ a calendar for which Jessie Willcox Smith and Elizabeth Shippen Green made the drawings, proved so deservedly popular that this year the drawings are published as a book.” This is the original 1904 calendar set, including the cover and six illustrated calendars. GREEN, ELIZABETH SHIPPEN (1871--1954) The Parasol. Original illustration, charcoal on illustration board, 23 1/4 x 14 inches (59 x 35 cm), overall size 33 3/4 x 24 1/2 inches (86 x 62 cm), signed with Shippen's monogram ESH (l.r.). Framed. From Kendra Krienke, with her label on rear. Shippen, who studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1887 with the painters Thomas Pollock Anshutz, Thomas Eakins, and Robert Vonnoh, and later with Howard Pyle at Drexel Institute, was a lifelong friend of both Violet Oakley and Jessie Willcox Smith. They roomed together at the Red Rose Inn (and were called the Red Rose girls by Pyle). Shippen was already publishing by the age of 18, and she illustrated extensively for Harper's Magazine and Harper's Monthly, St. Nicholas, etc. This particularly charming illustration, an extraordinarily accomplished charcoal drawing, has not been traced to place of publication, but it is a piece of exceptional quality. Watercolor, charcoal and gouache on illustration board, sight size 19 5/8 x 16 1/2 in. (49.8 x 41.9 cm), framed. Condition: Front mat adhered to board, support very slightly warped, mild toning. Provenance: By descent through the family of the owner. N.B. Elizabeth Shippen Green was born to a prominent Philadelphia family; she was the daughter of Jasper Green, who worked for Harper¹s as an illustrator during the Civil War. By the 1890s illustration was growing and the vast majority of readers were women, yet very few publications featured work by female artists and "magazine editors actively sought out qualified artists who could delineate a feminine point of view." (1) Encouraged by her father, Green displayed artistic talent early on. Her first published illustration, featuring a child and her doll, appeared in the Philadelphia Times, on her 18th birthday. Soon after, Green started classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, however, finding the atmosphere gloomy, she left to study with preeminent illustrator Howard Pyle, at Drexel University. Green soon became close friends with fellow female illustrators Jessie Wilcox Smith and Violet Oakley. The three women, with their close friend Henrietta Cozens, moved in to the Red Rose Inn and were thus dubbed the ³Red Rose Girls.² There the women lived and worked together, each enjoying successful careers during America¹s golden age of illustration. Green produced images for Harper¹s, Ladies¹ Home Journal and the Saturday Evening Post. (1) Carter, Alice A. "The Red Rose Girls" (New York, Harry N. Abrams, Inc.), 2000, pg. 26.
