    William Green of Ambleside (1760-1823) - A group of 5 drawings of the Lake District, pencil drawings on wove paper, each titled in the artist's hand, in ink, below, each c.11 x 17cm (4 3/8 x 6 3.4 in), unframed (5) The compositions appear to be the preparatory sketches for the equivalent, reversed, scenes in Green's 'A Description of a Series of 60 small prints etched by William Green of Ambleside from drawings made by himself', published in 1814, differing generally in the absence of occasional figures added to the plates.

    WILLIAM GREEN OF AMBLESIDE (BRITISH, 1760-1823) LAKE DISTRICT LANSCAPE NEAR BORROWDALE signed on old backboard: W.Green; watercolour (unframed) 25.5cm x 38 cm; 10in x 15 in Green settled in the Lake District just after 1800 and is generally regarded as one of the first artists to make a comprehensive and accurate topographical survey of the area. The result was his major 1819 work The Tourists' New Guide to the Lake District, based on the numerous watercolours and drawings he made over the previous two decades. At his death in 1823 his epitaph was written by his friend the poet William Wordsworth.
