Inspired by Kate Grennaway's "Old Nursery Rhyme Series" a vintage hand-painted tile artwork set within a wood frame. The polychrome scene is executed in the style of illustrator Kate Greenaway and depicts two children in period attire fishing from a stone bridge over water, situated next to a large building or structure. The decoration technique appears to be a transfer-printed outline with hand-painted tinted coloring on a square earthenware body. The tile is secured in a dark-stained wooden frame featuring a decorative brass hanger at the top. The reverse of the wooden frame backing bears a handwritten inscription in black ink that reads Kate Greenaway. [CHILDREN'S BOOKS]. GREENAWAY, Kate (1846-1901). Almanacks. London: George Routledge & Sons, 1883-1895. Thirteen 24mo, one 12mo volumes, plus a facsimile of Greenaway's 1885 Alphabet (probably ca. 1973). Color illustrations throughout. Publisher's glazed paper boards with illustrations. 1889 volume is bound in publisher's brown cloth boards. 1884, 1886, and 1892 volumes are bound in imitation vellum and, along with the 1889 volume, gilt-edged and lettered in gilt on front boards. 1884 volume is a 12mo stitched pamphlet. FIRST EDITIONS OF THE COMPLETE SET OF ALMANACKS. Greenaway's Almanack series was wildly popular in the United States and much of Europe: the 1883 edition alone sold 90,000 copies. An additional almanac was published in 1897, though no almanac was published in 1896.

Kate Greenaway (English, 1846-1901). Watercolor painting of three children fishing and playing by a pond on an overcast spring or summer day. Initialed along the lower left. There are three children in the foreground, one on the far left wears a brown frock and hat and holds a fishing pole with a bucket near their feet. Standing next to the fisher is a girl in an empire-waist white dress holding the hand of a much smaller child who seems disinterested in the other children's fishing activities. In the background are two other children seated under a tree near a family of ducks in the water. Behind them is a large, ivy-covered house behind a row of hedges. Kate Greenaway was an English Victorian artist and writer known for her children's book illustrations. This work was featured in the November 1911 issue of "Woman's Home Companion," a monthly magazine published from 1873 to 1957.

Greenaway (Kate) Seven original illustrations for Fanny Lablanche's "Starlight Stories Told to Bright Eyes and Listening Ears", pencil on wove paper, each with pencil captions and three with blue pencil printer’s marks, various sizes between 138 x 94 mm (5 3/8 x 3 3/4 in) and 190 x 138 mm (7 1/2 x 5 3/8 in), pinholes to corners, otherwise some minor surface dirt, all unframed, [circa 1877] ⁂ Three of the sketches, all with printer’s pencil marks or annotations, were used in the 1877 first edition published by Griffith and Farran with the illustrations engraved by her father John. One (number 6) is an unused but very similar sketch to the published illustration (number 5); numbers 2, 4 and 7 are original designs not used in the final publication.

Two Kate Greenaway Books 1909 & 1988

These two books are both illustrated by Kate Greenaway. The first is titled Little Ann And Other Poems By Jane and Ann Taylor, Illustrated by Kate Greenaway and published by Frederick Warne circa 1909, and it has nineteenth century poems about children which reflect the manners and mores of the day. The second book is A Mother Goose Treasury Illustrated By Kate Greenaway and published by Avenel in 1988, with the original dust jacket. Sizes: 9 1/8 x 6 in. 8 x 5 1/2 in. Little Ann And Other Poems has a green cloth spine, printed paper boards featuring a colored illustration of seated children, each holding a letter of the title, all the edges were stained red by the publisher, yellow coated endpapers, an illustrated half-title with “Made in Great Britain” stamped below the floral decoration, then an illustrated color frontis, the title page was illustrated by Kate Greenaway and the bottom of the page says the book was published in London by Warne, the copyright page is undated, but the book was published circa 1909, according to WorldCat, so it’s the second edition, then a page dedicated to the children of Frederick Locker Esq, a Contents page, and 64 pages of text filled with numerous color illustrations by Greenaway. The first edition was published in 1883 by George Routledge and had all the edges stained blue by the publisher, and Edmund Evans was the printer and had his name stated on the front board of the first edition, and the 1909 copy here has the red stain on all the edges and lacks his name on the front board. Catherine “Kate” Greenaway (1846 - 1901) was an English Victorian artist and writer known for illustrating children’s books. Her mother was a dress maker and her father an engraver, and perhaps that’s where her interest in art developed. She received her education in graphic design and art between 1858 and 1871 from several schools, and she received her first commission for children’s book illustrations in 1867, which set her on a path towards specializing in children’s books. She exhibited a set of fairy watercolors in 1868 and designed greeting cards for Christmas and Valentine’s to keep money coming in. In 1879 wood-block engraver and printer Edmund Evans printed her first book, Under the Window, it became a best-seller and cemented her reputation as an artist. She continued collaborating with Evans throughout the 1880's and 90’s, and along with Aubrey Beardsley, she was considered one of the most popular bookplate designers of her time - her only rivals for popularity in illustrating children’s books were Walter Crane and Randolph Caldecott - mighty high company to keep. Jane Taylor (1783 - 1824) was an English poet and novelist who collaborated with her sister Ann on the poems in Little Ann, and Jane is most famous for “The Star”, a poem which we now know by its first line ‘"Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”. A Mother Goose Treasury was illustrated by Kate Greenaway and is undated, but it was published by Avenel in 1988, according to WorldCat, it has blue boards with silver lettering and a silver motif on the front board, 49 full color illustrations inside, and it comes with the dust jacket. Little Ann And Other Poems measures 9 1/8 x 6 inches wide and is in very good condition, with a tight binding and clean pages and illustrations for the most part. There is faint wear along the edges of the boards and at the tips, a few pages have brown spots, and faint marks on the yellow flyleaf in front. A Mother Goose Treasury measures 8 x 5 1/2 inches wide and the one blemish is a small tear on the back of the dust jacket, and both titles are attractive copies of these books illustrated by Katie Greenaway. #6273

A VICTORIAN ENGRAVED SILVER SCENT FLASK IN THE MANNER OF KATE GREENAWAY by Sampson Mordan II, London 1884, in the original fitted case. 14cm long, 1.2 troy ounces Kate (or Catherine) Greenaway (1846-1901) was a Victorian childrens book illustrator and writer. The daughter of a successful draftsman and wood engraver, she studied graphic design and art between 1858 and 1869. Her first book, Under the Window, was an instant best-seller, brought her immediate fame and was followed by numerous highly successful publications. At the same time as her writing career she excelled as a watercolourist, working with illustrators Walter Crane and Randolph Caldecott. Her distinctive old-fashioned style depicted children and young ladies dressed in early 19th Century costumes in quaint settings, a style of grace and charm that transformed the childrens book market. Walter Crane described her talent as captivating the public in a remarkable way.
