Herb Green Signed Photo of Jerry Garcia & Flag

        Est: $400 - $600

Herb Greene (American, born 1942) Signed Photo of Jerry Garcia & Flag. Titled: Jerry Garcia with an American flag and banjo. Photographed in 1966 at the Dead’s Famous 710 Ashbury residence in San Francisco. With Garcia’s almost presidential pose this portrait is an all time American classic. American Beauty, from the "Brief Encounters with the Dead" portfolio Date: 1967 Herb Greene photographed the rock musicians and other members of San Francisco's cultural milieu during the height of its creative productivity. Greene, a friend of many of San Francisco's most influential musicians, worked as few photographers have: not as a documenter from the outside, but as a participant within the music scene he was photographing. Many of his photographs have become signature portraits of these musicians. His revealing portraits of The Jefferson Airplane, Jeff Beck, The Pointer Sisters, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Carlos Santana, Sly Stone, Rod Stewart and many others helped create astonishing family album for an entire generation. Herb Greene is perhaps the best-known chronicler of the Haight-Ashbury music scene in the 1960s. During this vibrant period in American music history, Greene worked by day as a staff photographer for a San Francisco department store, while photographing characters of the early rock scene on his own time. His work during these years helped define popular images of superstar performers such as the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin. Overall Size: 18 5/8 x 18 5/8 in. Sight Size: 10 3/4 x 10 5/8 in. #5605

        Est: $8,000 - $12,000

HERB GREENE (1942- ) & JAMES H. GARDNER (DATES UNKNOWN) JEFFERSON AIRPLANE / GRATEFUL DEAD / TORONTO. 1967. 20 1/2x14 inches, 52x35 1/2 cm. Tea Lautrec, San Francisco. Condition B-: extensive creases and abrasions along sharp vertical and horizontal folds; abrasions and staining in margins and image; verso made into a tape and marker sign reading "Students to I-75 Lexington KY." Printed on thick paper. This 1st printing was produced before the concert on two different kinds of paper - one, a thick poster board and the other, a thin regular stock version. In the summer of 1967, Bill Graham took two of his San Francisco favorites to Canada - The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. The series of shows took place at Toronto's O'Keefe Centre. There are hard-to-verify stories that the original cache of posters was confiscated at the Canadian border by border patrol, but we don't know for sure if the posters were seized or simply stowed away by Canadian fans. Perhaps because of this, BG-074 is among the rarest of concert posters.
