Influenced by local life and mentored by one of the Cowboy Artists of America, James Boren, Grelle began painting as a teenager, expanding from depictions of Scandinavian settlers to broader Western themes. Joining the Cowboy Artists of America in 1995, he explores diverse landscapes across the U.S. and Europe, drawn particularly to mountains for their grandeur. Using primarily oils with a focus on color and texture, Grelle evokes dramatic light and shadow in his work, increasingly delving into historical narratives to tell visual stories. Commenting on Trinkets, Grelle notes that, “It was done for a show at Overland Gallery, and I believe it was either late 1980’s or early 1990’s. I do remember that it was a significant painting for me…one of my first attempts at painting more Northern plains oriented Native American subjects, rather than the Taos, Acoma, and other Southwestern oriented subjects I had previously done.”

The original oil painting is in excellent condition with no issues, the frame has a few small nicks. Weighs approximately 40 pounds. Provenance: Estate of David Milot. David was a Real Estate Broker by trade and a passionate, lifelong collector of anything of quality that caught his eye. His collection of fine art, bronzes, designer decor, period furniture, mid-century furniture, designer furniture, Chinese antiques and more are among some of the finest examples available. David's knowledge, or perhaps more accurately, "his eye" for quality, was usually the most refined of anyone in the room. David purchased thousands of items over the years at auctions, estate sales, and antique stores so any additional provenance is not readily available. Martin Grelle (American, b. 1954). Oil on canvas painting titled "Colorado Cathedral," depicting two cowboys and their two packhorses riding through the snowy Rocky Mountains, ca. 1994. Signed along the lower right. Provenance: Overland Gallery, Scottsdale, Arizona; Distinguished Corporate Collection, Minnesota. Grelle began drawing and painting as a young child. While still in high school, two professional artists and members of the Cowboy Artists of America, James Boren and Melvin Warren, moved to his area and had a lasting impact on his career. Mentored by Boren, he had his first solo exhibition within a year of graduating high school in 1973. He has had around 30 solo exhibitions since including an annual show at the Overland Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona. In 1995 he became a member of the Cowboy Artists of America, a lifelong dream of his, and has since served on their board of directors, as president, and as chairman for their 50th Anniversary Events in 2015. He also teaches an annual workshop along with Bruce Greene to teach aspiring artists. He has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career including the Prix de West Purchase Award twice, the Nona Jean Hulsey Rumsey Buyers' Choice Award twice, multiple Cowboy Artist's awards, and the Legacy Award by The Briscoe Museum in 2012.
