During this period, the artist dedicated himself intensely to en plein air painting, capturing the rugged nature of the North Sea coast and the daily life of the local fishermen. The present drawing shows a panoramic view of the settlement from the dunes, emphasizing the seclusion and the original character of this location. The works ''Vesuvius near Sorrento'' and ''Capri IV. Faraglioni'' occupy a unique position in the oeuvre of Carlos Grethe. In contrast to the lead-grey tones of the North Sea typical of his work, these pieces are dominated by a palette shaped by the light of the southern sun, featuring bright blue, ochre, and terracotta tones. These works were created during a health-related trip to Italy in the spring of 1898, following a serious injury the artist suffered in December 1897. In total, this series comprises 29 watercolors and drawings. Although these light-filled works are of masterful quality, Grethe ultimately found the southern sea ''too peaceful.'' This makes the Italian cycle a rare exception in his overall body of work, which is usually dedicated to man's tireless struggle against the unleashed elements. 'Vesuv bei Sorrent' und 'Capri IV. Faraglioni' nehmen eine Sonderstellung im Schaffen von Carlos Grethe ein. Im Gegensatz zu den für ihn typischen bleigrauen Tönen der Nordsee dominiert hier ein vom Licht der südlichen Sonne geprägter Kolorit mit Blau-, Ocker- und Terrakottatönen. Die Arbeiten entstanden während einer gesundheitlich bedingten Italienreise im Frühjahr 1898 (Neapel, Sorrent, Capri und Amalfi), nachdem der Künstler im Dezember 1897 eine schwere Verletzung erlitten hatte. Insgesamt umfasst diese Serie 29 Aquarelle und Zeichnungen. Obwohl diese lichtdurchfluteten Arbeiten von meisterhafter Qualität sind, empfand Grethe das südliche Meer letztlich als ''zu friedlich''. Dies macht den italienischen Zyklus zu einer seltenen Ausnahme in seinem Gesamtwerk, das üblicherweise dem unermüdlichen Kampf des Menschen gegen die entfesselten Elemente gewidmet ist. This work was created in the summer of 1897, when the artist traveled from Duhnen to Heligoland to study the coastal landscapes there. During this period, Grethe finally established his role as the ''painter of the restless, turbulent sea,'' shifting from his early genre scenes to powerful maritime studies. It was here that he began to refine his characteristic ''marine style,'' which would later lead to the creation of his large-scale ship and harbor paintings in the Port of Hamburg. The work reflects that decisive moment when Grethe discovered the dynamics of the elements and the interplay of light and water as the central themes of his oeuvre. In dieser Zeit festigte Grethe endgültig seine Rolle als ''Maler des rastlosen, aufgewühlten Meeres'' und wandte sich von seinen frühen Genredarstellungen kraftvollen maritimen Studien zu. Genau hier begann er seinen charakteristischen ''Meeresstil'' zu verfeinern, der ihn später zur Schaffung seiner großformatigen Schiffe- und Hafenbilder im Hamburger Hafen führen sollte. Die Arbeit spiegelt jenen entscheidenden Moment wider, in dem Grethe die Dynamik der Elemente und das Wechselspiel von Licht und Wasser als zentrales Thema seines Schaffens entdeckte. N. 261, 15 x 23 , Carlos Grethe "Fischer", im Goldstuckrahmen um 1900 Zum Künstler: Carlos Grethe war der Sohn niederdeutscher Eltern, die als Kaufleute in Montevideo lebten. Ab seinem fünften Lebensjahr wohnte er in Hamburg. Von 1882 bis 1884 studierte er bei Theodor Poeckh, Ernst Schurth und Karl Hoff sowie von 1889 bis 1890 an der Karlsruher Kunstakademie. Zwischen durch war er an der Pariser Académie Julian (1884-1886). Es folgten 1890 eine Lehrtätigkeit an der Karlsruher Kunstgewerbeschule und 1891 als Professor an der dortigen Akademie.1893 wurde er Professor für Malerei an der Kunstschule Karlsruhe. Von 1899 bis zu seinem Tod hatte er eine Lehrtätigkeit an der Kgl. Akademie der bildenden Künste in Stuttgart. Seine künstlerische Entwicklung vollzog sich vom modernen Realismus zu Beginn seiner Schaffensphase zu impressionistischen Inhalten in seinen späteren Werken

Carlos Grethe, "Helgoland", signiertes Aquarell Carlos Conrad Grethe, 1864 Montevideo, Uruguay - 1913 Nieuwpoort, Belgien, "Helgoland", Zwei Männer schauen von einem erhöhten Punkt hinter einer Mauer auf die Stadt hinunter. Dabei benutzt einer ein Fernrohr. Aquarell/Papier, 48,5 x 33 cm, signiert, betitelt, unter P.p. Zum Künstler: lebte ab seinem 5. Lebensjahr in Hamburg. Ausbildung zum Dekorationsmaler; 1882-84 Studium bei T. Poeckh, E. Schurth u. K. Hoff sowie 1889-90 an der Karlsruher Kunstakademie. Zwischen durch war er an der Pariser Académie Julian (1884-1886). Für eine achtmonatige Seereise nach Mexiko (1888-1889) unterbrach er das Studium; die Seereise sollte sein Schaffen im maritimen Bereich stark beeinflussen. Es folgten 1890 eine Lehrtätigkeit an der Karlsruher Kunstgewerbeschule und 1891 als Professor an der dortigen Akademie. Im November 1893 wurde er Professor für Malerei an der Kunstschule Karlsruhe. Von 1899 bis zu seinem Tod (1913) hatte er eine Lehrtätigkeit an der Kgl. Akademie der bildenden Künste in Stuttgart. Hier unterrichtete er an der technischen Malschule. Ab 1906 wohnte er auch in Nieuwport in Belgien.

Freistehend gerahmt. - An den Rändern vereizelt mit leichten und wenig merklichen Oberflächlichenbereibungen der Malschicht. Insgesamt gut. Szenische Strandansicht im spätimpressionistischen Stil mit bewegtem Pinselduktus aus dem Spätwerk des Künstlers. Der deutsche Maler spezialisierte sich in seinem Werk auf Seestücke und Schiffsdarstellungen, angeregt durch die Faszination für Schiffsreisen und die maritime Welt, die er während einer monatelangen Schiffsreise nach Mexiko ausgiebig erleben konnte. Seine malerische Ausbildung erhielt Grethe an der Karlsruher Kunstakademie und während eines Aufenthaltes in Paris an der Académie Julian 1884-1886. Es folgten eine Lehrtätigkeit zunächst an der Akademie in Karlsruhe, dann eine Professur an der Malschule Karlsruhe und folgend der Wechsel an die Königliche Akademie in Stuttgart, wo Grethe als Dozent tätig war. Ab 1906 lebte er an der belgischen Nordseeküste in Nieuwport und bereiste zusätzlich die Küsten der Niederlande, Deutschlands und Dänemarks. In seinem Spätwerk entwickelte Grethe eine besondere Vorliebe für das Motiv des Krevettenfischers, sodass unser Gemälde ein personaltypisches Beispiel darstellt. Vergleichbare Werke befinden sich bspw. in der Sammlung des Museum Nuss, Baden-Württemberg. Oil on canvas. Signed.
