An Original Charles McIver Grierson (1864-1939) This is an original Oil on Board by the famous Charles McIver Grierson (1864-1939). He was actually Irish Born and later moved to the UK where he did the bulk of his painting. This is a very good early piece signed by Grierson to the bottom right corner, and it appears to be dated '91, which would be 1891. It is in a Victorian Frame and still under its original hand rolled glass. There is a lot of soul to this piece. Its Titled "Hearts & Trumps", and measures 60cm wide by 51cm high (in frame)

Charles MacIver Grierson RI (1864-1934) Circus Tricks Watercolour, 61 x 76cm (24 x 30'') Signed and dated 1890 Provenance: Sold in these rooms, ''Important Irish Art'' sale, 26th May 1999, Cat. No. 111, where purchased by the current owner Charles MacIver Grierson was born in Queenstown, now Cobh, Co. Cork, in December 1864. His father was the manager of the Cunard Steamship Company, Queenstown. He studied at the Crawford School of Art and for a time went on to the Westminister School of Art. The main venue for his output was the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour where over the years he exhibited over 80 works including some Irish views. He met his wife while staying in Sligo in the period between 1899-1904 and several of his works are in private collections in Sligo. He exhibited extensively including at the RHA, RA, Walker Gallery, Liverpool, 64 works at the Abbey Gallery, Manchester City Gallery and the Society of Artists, Birmingham and as a far afield as Sydney and Adelaide where the City Art Gallery was an official purchaser.

Provenance: H. Alexander Parsons Esq; Private collection Exhibited: RA, London, 1902, catalogue no. 912 Literature: Notes:Born in Queenstown, now Cobh, Co. Cork, Grierson was the son of a manager with the Cunard steamship company. He was apprenticed to a local architect, William Henry Hill, but abandoned the position in preference for fine art, studying at the Cork School of Art and at the Westminster School in London. He was soon exhibiting with the RA, the RHA, and the RI, of which association he became a member, showing over eighty works with them. His wife, Ethel Davys, was a native of Sligo, and the pair lived there circa 1899-1904 or perhaps later. ( See Snoddy, pp. 210-211). The present work is thought to depict Grierson's wife in their sitting room in George's Street, Sligo, and is in its original gilt frame.
